Western civilization mainly consists of modern-day Western Europe and North America. Have you ever wondered about the roots of western civilization? Well, the roots of western civilization is a very important thing that we should all have at least some knowledge on. It is basically about what some ancient civilizations has contributed to us today. There are many important achievements of these ancient civilizations that have had an impact on western civilization Such as, how their trading networks with each other made the ancient and modern world more diverse and multicultural, contributed to our many traditions and contributed to our way of life and the techonological and scientific advances we use in our daily life. However, I'd like to focus on the achievements of two great ancient civilizations, how those achievements influenced the rise of the Western Civilization, and have contributed to our modern day.
One of the civilizations that made many influential contributions to western civilization is the Ancient Greek civilization. Most of their impact on western civilization was from their golden age. Three of their greatest achievements included the arts and artchitcture, advances in science and math, and in political science. There are many forms of art, but the Greeks excelled in sculptures. Ancient Greeks were impressively able to capture a wide range of moods and depicture ranges of movements in sculptures. This allowed their sculptures to seem very realistic and ifluenced artists from then on to produce realistic sculptures. The Greeks developed three architectural systems, which are, the doric, ionic, and corinthian styles. The doric was plain and sturdy, the ionic style was thinner and more elegant, and the corinthian w...

...ny legal systems in the European and other countries influenced by Europe, like, the United States. Ancient Rome had an impact of the government of other countries, like, the United States. As the Romans, we run a system of government that included an executive branch and for them it was the consul. Another similrity is that Ancient Rome's twelve tables is similar to our Bill of Rights.
However, Rome had the greatest influence on Western Civilization than all other civilizations. Rome left cultures, customs, government, politics, and religion. As Ancient Rome expanded on ideas those in Western Europe and North America were able to expand even more from their contributions. And as I mentioned latin has been the reason for the development of many languages. In conclusion, although Greece influnced Western Civilization with important things, Rome had a bigger impact.
From 500 AD to 500 B.C, during the classical era, Rome and Greece, developed and settled along the Mediterranean Sea. Within these 1000 years, both Rome and Greece went through multiple transitions of power and struggled to maintaining peace. America learned from Greece and Rome’s mistakes and evolved into a more successful version of the two civilizations. The two civilizations did not only teach United States, but they also influenced American culture and infrastructure. Although Greece contributed to many elements of modern day America, Rome had a larger influence on America through the use of democracy, economy, and advancement in culture.
The ancient Greek civilization has left a rich cultural footprint on modern Western civilization. Especially during the ancient Classical and Hellenistic eras of Greece, ancient Greeks have left behind a plethora of ideas and concepts that have played a crucial role in forming the foundations to Western civilization. Although the Classical era was a time of war and conflict, it was the Golden Age of Greece that was the home to many achievements in art, philosophy, architecture, politics, and literature such as the birth of democracy. The Hellenistic era was a period of social and economic prosperity that was defined by the spread of Greek culture across the entire eastern Mediterranean and Southwest Asia. During this era, countless of advancements
As you can see, Greeks and Romans were very brilliant civilizations. Their superior strategy, intelligent leaders, and crafty weapons lead them into the dawn of a new age. And basically lead us to our modern civilization.

When referring to classical antiquity period, most think of Greece and Rome dominating and flourishing in the areas of philosophy, sciences, mathematics and literature. One other admirable achievement, the establishment of early forms of democracy, came from this time period and should not be overlooked as it is the historical basis of our government today. The Founding Fathers of the United States were influenced by Greek and Roman concepts in law, government structure, and even philosophy. Concepts described in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States can be traced back historically to the classical antiquity period, and show that the United States government and law were modeled after those of Greece and Rome.
Throughout time, it has been said that the Romans have made some major contributions when it came to Western civilization. A plethora of the contributions were in the categories of the law and engineering. In the law field, Romans left behind a great legacy for Western civilization, for instance one contribution being their Twelve Tables. The Twelve Tables established written rules of criminal and civil law. Not only with the Twelve Tables, but they developed the distinction between public law in which the state is concerned directly and private law which involves disputes between persons, the process of making laws has also had an influence on modern democratic political systems. During the Roman Republic, lawmaking was a bicameral activity and legislation was passed by an assembly of the citizens. It was then approved by the representatives of the upper class, or the senate, and issued in the name of the senate and the people of Rome. Many countries like the United States have adopted the republican Rome as a reproduction for their own governments.
One of the more popular religions that shared a role in influencing western civilization would be Christianity. Christianity is a monotheist religion that developed in a time period where polytheism was highly preferred. Although it had only a few followers in the beginning, it has made a lasting impression on civilization. One of its biggest roles was helping to end human sacrifice and slavery. Christians strongly disagreed in the degrading of human life. It was very common in the 1600’s for traditional punishments to be executed if someone had gone against you. Christianity shined a new light on the matter and gave an
Ancient Greece has set the tone for the standard of how great sculptures were crafted. Therefore, a classic example of this form is the Fallen Warrior from the East Pediment, taken from the ruins of the temple of Aphaia. With its mythology and architectural styles, Ancient Greece has undoubtedly changed the way sculptures were made and still inspires many artists to this day.
The Ancient Greek contribution ranged by the 1900-133 BC, however its influence on the Western Literate Society lasts to this day. As the Greeks expanded their empire, they spread their ideas to other countries, while also borrowing from other cultures. During this period of time, the Greeks made many significant and long-lasting contribution to our modern culture in Philosophy, Art, Democracy, Drama, Math, and Science. These givings of important ideas, inventions, and structures have had an extraordinary influence on the surrounding environment, society, and in the future. The essential contribution of Greeks to the Western Civilization are Democracy, Art, and Philosophy.
Perhaps one of the most defining and easily identifiable aspects of the ancient Greek culture was the immortalization of humans and gods in sculpture. Sculpture had existed in the world for thousands of years before the ancient Greeks made their stake in the art, but the Greeks added an entirely new set of aspects to their sculptures. Unlike the Egyptian and Mesopotamian sculpture centuries earlier, the Greeks set forth not just to capture the image of a man but to capture that which made him a man. The Greeks set in place three base tenants to display the tone of a sculpture. Through the use of Humanism, Realism, and Idealism the ancient Greeks were able to capture humans and gods forever in marble.
Around 4000 B.C.E, the first people settled down next to the Tigris and Euphrates in Mesopotamia, alongside the Nile in Egypt, and much later in Greece. Naturally, the people in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece developed different lifestyles. To most, Egyptian life was much different than that of the Mesopotamians. Even within Greece, the Hellenistic and Classical Greeks showed discrepancies in their customs. Though massive tracks of land separated them, congruencies between their cultures also existed. Most prominent are the overlaps and disparities between the topics of women, slaves, religion, and the law.
Ideology, Knowledge and the escalation of new ideas led to a better life and society that made positive impacts on Western Civilizations. There were many idea’s that were explored and implement into the daily lives of the people and for the most part it turned out to be a good impact. Although there were some bad ideas that caused suffering to the society at the time. They learned from what they witnessed and created something that would work better for the most part. In this essay I am going to use some primary sources that support my idea that society benefited from the new “ideas” but I will also use an example to explain how it caused a negative impact too.

There are many different ways that modern cultures in the west have been impacted and built upon, but there are two ancient cultures that were the most influential. The Greek and Roman cultures helped shape Western Civilization in many ways. Both were very important factors in the development of Western culture. The Greeks contributed through art, architecture, government, philosophy, education, and science. The Romans contributed through language, engineering, law, and government.
Throughout history, there have been several significant architectural movements. The last, and perhaps most enduring movement is that of Classic Greece. Although for centuries, the architecture of ancient Greece has been admired, mimicked, and replicated, its beginnings are somewhat surprising to one unfamiliar with the history of the region. It is important to understand the history and mechanics of Classic Greek architecture in order to fully appreciate its form, function, and beauty. “Ancient Greek architects strove for the precision and excellence of workmanship that are the hallmarks of Greek art in general. The formulas they invented as early as the sixth century B.C. have influenced the architecture of the past two millennia” (metmuseum.org).
