The Great Sphinx of Giza is an extremely impressive piece of limestone architecture that is still standing to this day. The Sphinx is located in front of Khafre's pyramid facing the East in the Giza Plateau located near the Nile River in Giza, Egypt. The formation of the Sphinx is commonly debated but some say that it was built around 2500 BC for the great pharaoh Khafre who had made the second pyramid out of the three. The mythical creature has a lion body but the face is a sculpture of human, Khafre. It’s approximately “[...] 240 feet in length and 66 feet in height” (Suhr). The great height was served as a closer connection to Re, who is the god of the sun. The Sphinx would connect the people of Egypt and the gods with the belief that the Pharaoh would encase the connection between the “[...] heavens and the laws of nature” (Suhr). The Egyptian people would use this as a medium to connect themselves closer with the rest of the gods and in the afterlife. …show more content…
Khafre who is a Pharaoh that controls keeps the natural forces at equilibrium would be able to “[...] serve as a passageway by which he and those close to him may achieve salvation through his divinity” (Suhr). In the afterlife, most people would not want to experience the darker afterlife so being a kinship to the Pharaoh would in hopes increase their chances of reaching salvation. Also, those who were apart of building the Sphinx would also be buried when the Pharaoh had died so that the entrances would be kept a secret. Even though there may not be any artifacts found yet, there may be treasures that are buried below the surface so that raiders would not be able to find
The Pyramids Of Giza were chosen as they are three extraordinary structures that give a rich insight into the context, culture, function, technology, power and experiential aspects of the time period and the buildings themselves. The three pyramids showcase the Egyptian’s advanced construction and design methods, their religious beliefs and practices, their rich and diverse culture, the power of the king, as well as the context that surrounded these magnificent structures.

...nt through the women. The power to rule was passed from wife to husband. Kha-merer-nebty II is shown here presenting her husband, Mycerinus, as the pharaoh. Unlike the sculpture of Augustus, this sculpture also has a religious purpose. The Egyptians believed that in order for the “ka” (spirit) to live forever, the body had to be preserved which is why they mummified their bodies. As an extra precaution, sculptures like these were made to serve as a “replacement body” for the ka should something happen to their body.
The statue of King Khafre Seated , from the fourth dynasty of the Old Kingdom, 2520 - 2492 BCE, was created by an unknown artist in the smooth permanence of graywacke stone. Although the statue is currently at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as number 56 in the Special Egyptian Exhibition, its true home is at the Egyptian Museum, in Cairo. The man being portrayed, King Khafre, ruled Egypt for approximately thirty years, during which he commissioned the single most recognizable monuments of Egypt, the a fore mentioned Pyramids at Giza and the Sphinx. These monuments of symmetry and solidity characterize the focus of popular architecture and sculpture from the Old Kingdom in Egypt.
The Great Sphinx of Egypt has represented the spirit and the presence of the Egyptians. The head is of a god or king and it has the body of a lion. It has become a symbol of strength and wisdom, since it was mostly built to protect the Giza Pyramids in the belief of their lion goddess, Sekhmet. When a pharaoh marched into battle, a tamed lion was at his side. This was believed that this was a living representation of the goddess. Sekhmet was worshiped as a hunter with a head of a lion and the body of a woman. She was regarded as a fierce hunter with no equal. The Sphinx itself has been carved from the Giza plateau. The Great Sphinx is proof of the Egyptians Spirit and heart. It symbolizes Egypt in the modern world. There is no equal to the Sphinx.
The Red Pyramid, by Rick Riordan talks about two siblings, Carter and Sadie Kane, who lives apart from each other. On one of their infrequent visitations, the two siblings take a trip to the British Museum in London with their Egyptologist father, Julius Kane. In that place, he blows up the Rosetta Stone, thus releasing five imprisoned ancient Egyptian gods: Isis, Osiris, Horus, Set, and Nephthys. Set, generally known to be a God for chaos and destruction, imprisons Julius in a tomb.
One of the most mysterious structures found in today’s world is the Great Sphinx of Egypt, located on the outskirts of the hustling city of Giza. Many archeologists and explorers spend their entire careers trying to answer many unknowns about the Sphinx such as, “Who built the Sphinx,” and “Why does it exist?” Although these questions do not have clear answers, there are many theories that try to crack the mysteries of the Great Sphinx.
The Sphinx was built by Khafre. He is one of the sons of Khufa. Khufa commissioned the Great Pyramid. The face of the Sphinx maybe the Pharaoh Djedefre (Radjedef), an older brother of Khafre. Djedefre’s pyramid is badly damaged at Abu Roash. He is the only male pyramid commissioner in his family to not have a pyramid on the Giza Plateau. Khufa had another son, Menkarue also built a pyramid on the Giza Plateau along with his father.
Two paintings, both depicting the same scene with Oedipus and the Sphinx. Both depict Oedipus answering a riddle on the path to Thebes. The Sphinx that lived along that path stopped travelers and would give them a riddle, If the travelers could not solve the riddle, they would be killed. The paintings, one created by Gustave Moreau and another by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres were created in the same century, but carry many differences. Each painting is based on the same scene, so similarities are there.
The purpose of this speech is to inform you with the history behind The Great Pyramid of Giza.
Constructed during Egypt's 4th Dynasty, The Pyramids of Giza are truly an astonishing work of architecture. These pyramids display several of the characteristics, that are now known, to be attributed to the Ancient Egyptian era. Years of research show that much of the ancient Egyptian's focus in their artistry, was that of a religious nature, regardless of medium. Artists of the time, focused their efforts on depicting the various Gods and Goddesses, immortality and the afterlife, and the glorification of the pharaohs. (MindEdge) One of the best examples of this are the pyramids. Each pyramid was built to be the final resting place of a pharaoh (Khufu, Khafre, or Menkaure) upon his death, and subsequent mummification. They were built on the
The statue of Khafre is an example of how pharaohs utilized their wealth to elaborate the power they possessed while they were alive and to utilize while they were dead. They ordered statues to be made in their name to decorate the valley temple. The valley temple is a funerary setting in which Khafre ordered 23 statues to be made for it. In this case, Khafre’s statue was made and place near the
Seemingly static in appearance, to the untrained eye, Egyptian Art is somewhat formal and blocky, with very little to no naturalism; in opposition to ancient western art such as Greek and Roman artistic traditions. (Neer, 2012) However, Egyptian Art serves a purpose that celebrates the afterlife as well as appreciating life. Egyptian visual imagery expressed animals not in the typically assumed static and rigid form, but in naturalistic dynamism that is largely ignored in general Egyptian Art scholarship. Ancient Egyptian art endures a steady artistic tradition and despite various changes and modification in style occurred during the 3,000 years pharaohs ruled; they are recognizably Egyptian in origin. What was wholly unique was the artistic
Of all the pyramids of Egypt, the first three are held in the highest regards. This is known as the Great Pyramid. It was built for the Pharaoh Khufu. The Great Pyramid is about 450 feet tall and covers about 13 acres. The subject of this pyramid was to honor the pharaoh and show him some respect. It took about 100,000 workers and 20 years to build the pyramid.
