Pretentious Aspects of The Great Gatsby In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, the scene in which Myrtle and Tom go to New York to their apartment is critical. In the scene, Fitzgerald tries to convey that the main character, Nick, has a rather condescending attitude toward Tom’s mistress. Through Fitzgerald's choice of words he creates such a superiority complex effect for Nick that it almost seems out of place considering that Nick has probably the least extravagant life of all of his associates. There have been many recreations of this novel and scene, though the two that are predominant are Jack Clayton’s 1974 version and Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 version. He paints the picture of “a small living room, a small dining-room, a small bedroom, and a bath” (Fitzgerald 29). The repetition of that word “small” really emphasizes the miniature size of this apartment, especially since it is filled with furniture that was far too large. The number of people does somewhat add to the cluttered effect that Fitzgerald was going for in the novel, though it is not quite right. However, an aspect of the film that had a similar effect as the book was the prominence of the heat in the apartment. Everyone looks like they are hot and sweaty in this scene. This makes the apartment feel claustrophobic, which goes back to the emphasis on the word “small” that Nick uses to describe the apartment. Contrasted with the scene where Nick sees Daisy and Jordan for the first time, where the curtains are flowing in the breeze and the use of the color white makes everything feel light and airy, it is obvious that the use of the sweat and closeness at Myrtle’s party emphasizes her
Tom tries to show to the Nick his mistress with the proud. Myrtle appears as the total opposite character to the Daisy. She is ‘thicklish, faintly stout” (Fitzgerald 29), but “sensuously” and “immediately perceptible vitality about her” (Fitzgerald 29). His duplicity continues, as he meets Tom’s mistress, and later arranges Daisy and Gatsby’s meeting, even going as far as to say “don’t bring Tom” (85). These are clear deceptions and violations of trust, which both reveal that Nick is not the honest and forthright man he wants the reader to believe he is; on the contrary, in many ways he is the opposite of honest and forthright. However, Nick’s most clearly professed lie is in protection of Daisy, when Tom insists that Gatsby had killed Myrtle, and Nick remains silent, forgoing telling Tom about the “one unutterable fact,” - that it had not been Gatsby who was driving the car when it had hit Myrtle, but Daisy - in favor of protecting Daisy (178). Once again, Nick mischaracterizes his traits and even fails to recognize his deceptions and violations of trust as being dishonest, failing to evaluate his own traits. By highlighting Nick’s opinions of and interactions with life amongst the rich, F. Scott Fitzgerald crafts Nick into a complex character whose contrasting thoughts and actions create a many leveled, multifaceted character who shows the reader that one’s appraisal of one’s own traits can often be incorrect.
Jay Gatsby wants people to see him as this mysterious wealthy man who throws awesome parties in his big gothic mansion in West Egg. During the end of the party Nick expresses a variety of emotions, as he is “enchanted” and “repelled” by the arguments, and the careless gibberish of the drunken souls . Nick is enchanted by the amount of secrecy humans can disclose to a “casual watcher” when they are careless. He is “repelled” by the arguments and the derogatory comments Myrtle, and Tom makes about other people as they start to drink more.
Jay Gatsby’s funeral is a small service, not because that 's what was intended, but because no one bothered to show up. Nick wanted to give Gatsby the popularity he desired, even in death, but only three people were present in the end. Gatsby’s father, Henry C. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick’s unreliability as a narrator is blatantly evident, as his view of Gatsby’s actions seems to arbitrarily shift between disapproval and approval. Nick is an unreliable and hypocritical narrator who disputes his own background information and subjectively depicts Gatsby as a benevolent and charismatic host while ignoring his flaws and immorality from illegal activities. He refuses to seriously contemplate Gatsby’s negative attributes because of their strong mutual friendship and he is blinded by an unrealized faith in Gatsby. Furthermore, his multitude of discrepancies damage his ethos appeal and contribute to his lack of dependability.
Think about being separated from the one you love. You thought this person would be in your life forever and always. You may have spent days and weeks thinking and planning your future together, but then one day they disappear from your life. That person has moved on, and chose to live a life that no longer including you. It would be assumed in most cases that the love of your life is no longer the person they were before, so should you stick around and try to win them back? In the case of Gatsby and Daisy, Gatsby did not realize Daisy would be different, and although he still thinks he is in love with Daisy, is he in love with her for who she is now, or the idea of everything she used to be the answer may shock you, and this is all due to the unreal expectations he has for her to fill. Because Gatsby is not in love with who she is at the time they are reunited. Instead, he is caught up in the idea of who she used to be. The actions of Gatsby, how he talks about her, and the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy once they are back together again show who Gatsby is really in love with, and that is the old Daisy.
In chapter two of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Tom’s esoteric background and his infidelity with Myrtle Wilson is essentially introduced in the novel. At Tom’s house, Daisy tells Nick about how she wishes her daughter would be “a beautiful little fool” (17) because women are not taken very seriously and are considered trophies that the men compete for.. After saying this, Daisy smirks as if “ she [has] asserted her membership in a rather distinguished secret society to which she and Tom [belong]” (17). Daisy allows Nick to have a glimpse into her glamorous, yet conflicted life. “Gatsby turned out alright in the end.” Yes, because someone who ends up murdered in their own swimming pool, shot by a lackluster man, taking the blame for a crime he never committed for someone who quickly turned her back on him, is defined as “alright.” I never understood why Gatsby was the one to die. I thought he was the hero of the novel. Fitzgerald was a romantic; he was the American Dreamer. The novel was the epitome of the American Dream. The hero never fails; the underdog always wins. Isn’t that what we have always been taught? How could such a great man die? And why was Gatsby the only one pointed out as “alright?” I mean after all, most of the characters’ lives remained unchanged. Daisy and Tom resumed their marriage. Nick returned to the Midwest. Jordan continued her career. Gatsby was one of the only people who portrayed the repercussions of the events. How could someone that readers are supposed to root for die tragically, and on a false claim, nonetheless? Why did Fitzgerald murder Gatsby? But, after some research I realized Fitzgerald NEEDED Gatsby to die.
