Compare and Contrast Essay Both texts “ Great Effects of the Great Migration” by NBC news and “ One-way Ticket” by Langston Hughes have many similarities and differences. The purpose of the article by NBC news is just to inform readers with statistics. The purpose of the poem by Langston Hughes is the emotional way to give a piece to someone. To start, both pieces talk about the Jim Crow laws. The poem states it in a bad way saying “I am fed up with Jim Crow laws, people who are cruel and afraid, who lynch and run, who are scared of me and me of them.” This is saying how emotionally bad they hate the Jim Crow laws. How they wish they would go away. In the article by NBC news it states “...Discrimination of the Jim Crow south in search of better lives.” The informational way of saying how it is bad and how people wish they could move away from the laws. …show more content…
This is a lot different from the poem because the poem is the emotional way of explaining the Great Migration. For example the poem talks about how Langston hates the south and wishes to move away from it so maybe he can live a better live in the north. The article states both sides on how they are good and bad. He/she is in a neutral state, not telling what side they want or how they like that side better. When it all comes down to it, one of the greatest intellectual battles U.S. history was the legendary disagreement between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. This intellectual debate sparked the interest of the Northerners as well as the racist whites that occupied the south. This debate was simply about how the blacks, who just gained freedom from slavery, should exist in America with the white majority. Even though Washington and DuBois stood on opposite sides of the fence they both agreed on one thing, that it was a time for a change in the treatment of African Americans. I chose his topic to write about because I strongly agree with both of the men’s ideas but there is some things about their views that I don’t agree with. Their ideas and views are the things that will be addressed in this essay.
The two poems are two extreme sides of the Negro mentality. They do not leave opportunity for other Blacks to move. They are both required complete conformity. The short story was about Blacks weighting their options. It shows that Blacks can think logically about their action.

Reading these poems is an incredible learning experience because it allows readers to view segregation through the eyes of someone most affected by it. In the U.S. History course I took I didn’t take away the details and specific examples I did from reading and researching Brooks’ work. For example, the history textbook only mentioned one specific person who was affected by segregation, that person was Rosa Parks. The example of Rosa Parks demonstrated just one isolated incident of how black people were punished if they disobeyed the laws of segregation. In contrast, Brooks’ work demonstrates the everyday lives of black people living with segregation, which provides a much different perspective than what people are used to. An example, of this would be in Brooks’ poem “Bronzeville Woman in a Red Hat”. The speaker of this poem hired a black maid and referred to her as “it”(103). By not using the maid’s name or using the pronoun her, the speaker is dehumanizing the maid. In conclusion, the Great Migration was influenced by Jim Crow policies and the major factors that resulted from the influence of Jim Crow to cause blacks to migrate were fear and the desire to want to improve one’s life. Sadly, migrants did not receive what they expected when moving north, but some improvements were present compared to when living in the south. They escaped the torment of lynching and mob violence was not as bad. But due to the presence of Jim Crow practices and ideologies, African Americans were subjected to the same treatment they received in the south, just not as harsh as it was in the south.
Because of that, his writing seems to manifest a greater meaning. He is part of the African-American race that is expressed in his writing. He writes about how he is currently oppressed, but this does not diminish his hope and will to become the equal man. Because he speaks from the point of view of an oppressed African-American, the poem’s struggles and future changes seem to be of greater importance than they ordinarily would. The point of view of being the oppressed African American is clearly evident in Langston Hughes’s writing.
The progression of people into and within the United States has had an essential impact on the nation, both intentionally and unintentionally. Progressions such as The Great Migration and the Second Great Migration are examples of movements that impacted the United States greatly. During these movements, African Americans migrated to flee racism and prejudice in the South, as well as to inquire jobs in industrial cities. They were unable to escape racism, but they were able to infuse their culture into American society. During the twentieth century, economic and political problems led to movements such as The Great Migration and The Second Great Migration which impacted the United States significantly.
Although slavery has ended, segregation still has a lasting effect on American society. There are still African-Americans being mistreated in parts of the country, some people cannot get jobs and in recent time some people will not sell land to blacks. During the Harlem Renaissance, both Claude McKay and Langston Hughes developed an analysis of their time period through poetry. Each writer has a different poem but allude to the same theme. The White House by Claude McKay and I, Too, Sing, America by Langston Hughes makes a relevant comparison to the racial inequality during the 1900s. Both make a point about how White America has withheld equal rights from Blacks or Black America, making it hard for them to survive. More specifically, The White House speaks about the type of oppression being experienced during racial segregation and trying to triumph over it while I, Too, Sing, America speak about what created their oppression and envisioning change in the future.

Langston Hughes', "On the Road," uses beautiful symbolism and imagery. He offers a gift to his readers: Open your heart and life will provide unlimited abundance. During this literary analysis, we will take a look at how Hughes uses nature to demonstrate his main character's unwillingness to participate in life. Another point we'll examine is the use of anger and survival and how it can be used as a powerful force in breaking down racial barriers. Next, we'II look at Jesus Christ as a metaphor for how we experience life and how traditional church values contradict each other when it comes to the acceptance of human beings. Finally, we'll briefly take an historic look at how the Depression gave blacks an even playing field with whites.
In the poem, “Friends in the Klan”, a line in Stanza 2 states, “The Professor joined the protest.”, as well as “If you want to stay alive be away Tuesday, and “The professor stayed. And he prayed for his friend in the Klan”. Additionally, several lines in Stanza 1 state, “Black veterans of WWI experienced such discrimination in veterans’ hospitals that the Veterans’ administration, to save face, opened Tuskegee, a brand- new hospital for negroes only.” This reminds me of the fact that blacks were discriminated greatly, and jobs were controlled by whites. In the 1930’s, there wasn’t a black lawyer, or plantation owner.
Towards the middle of the poem the realist in Hughes comes out. He goes into the doubts that most African Americans had at the time. He says, "Down South in Dixie only train I sees got a Jim Crow car set aside for me." Another interesting technique he adds is when he capitalizes the "WHITE FOLKS ONLY" and "FOR COLORED" signs. He either does this to draw attention to the cause, or to try and know what it feels like to have these signs sticking in your face. He specifically mentions Birmingham, Mississippi, and Georgia during the poem. These were key cities that were into segregation of the South. "When it stops in Mississippi will it be made plain everybody's got a right to board the freedom train." Hughes almost is becoming a little agitated in the poem when he refers to these cities, especially when he is talking about Birmingham. "The Birmingham station's marked COLORED and WHITE, the white folks go left, the colored go right." In this part of the poem, he is questioning whether or not this Freedom Train is too good to be true. He sounds like he doubts a little of what this Freedom Train is all about. He knows there is a train, but there have been a lot of promises before that were not fulfilled, he does not want to get his hopes up before he finds out more about this train.
