Many people during the Great Depression were deprived of basic needs. Many people also took the risk on giving gifts to those in need. This paper will be about how the characters in the novel No Promises In The Wind, gave those gifts.
One gift given was when Joey gave the stray cat a bowl of milk. Joey wasn't really thinking straight when he bought this gift for the cat. Joey could have used this money to buy goods for himself. This gift never majorly impacted Joey or the book later on in the story.
Another example of a gift was when Pete Harris gives Joey the pocket knife for Christmas. When Pete Harris gives the pocket knife to Joey the pocket knife has Pete Harris’s initials but joey still was very grateful
for this gift of gratitude. Pete Harris gave the pocket knife to Joey because Pete Harris shows great respect to joey. The knife has no impact in the rest of the book. All in all Pete Harris was very kind for giving this gift. The last gift that was given was when Pete Harris offered Josh and Joey a job. Josh and Joey were to receive five dollars a week and three meals a day, for payment of working at the carnival. Although Josh thought the carnival music to be monotonous, Josh and Joey greatly enjoyed this job and all the other people who were working there. Unfortunately Josh and Joey lose this job due to a fire that burned down the carnival. All in all one major impact of them receiving this job as their gift was because Pete Harris felt bad for Josh and Joey. People during the Great Depression had limited needs. Many people although still found the space in their hearts to help those in need. These people who gave even the smallest gifts could have saved the lives of some people and they will be for ever thanked of their gratitude.
Since the carnival would be closed Christmas Eve, Emily invited the boys and Edward C. to her house for cocoa and molasses cookies. Jubilantly, Her invitation was accept. However, as may be expected from our modern society, the custom of giving gifts quickly turned into the practice of exchanging them. If one gives gifts to loved ones at Christmas, the reasoning goes, then those who do not receive gifts from a person are obviously not loved by him/her. So each individual now is required to give a gift to all of his/her friends, or risk communicating to them that s/he no longer loves them -- or perhaps never did! Also, there arises another problem when someone gets a gift from a person to whom they did not give one. Most everything that was received as gifts was either homemade or homegrown too. Mothers and grandmothers made dresses and aprons for girls from flour sacks.
