Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution are the five elements of plot. The short story Greasy Lake uses plot as a single literary device.
Exposition is the beginning of a short story. The setting is described, characters are introduced, and the main character is introduced to conflict or conflicts. The Greasy Lake story actually takes place a Greasy Lake, mainly in the parking lot. Three nineteen year old boys are bored on summer break and head up to Greasy Lake. The author foreshadows by making the statement “This was a tactical error, as damaging and irreversible in its way as Westmorland’s decision to dig in at Khe Sanh.” The boys

see a car they think belongs to someone they know. The author admits that dropping the key is his first mistake, and the suspense builds. The rising action in a story develops the conflict and a reader’s interest and suspense arise.
The boys walk up to the car and shortly realize that the car does not belong to someone they know. A strange man gets out of the car and strikes the main character. He then assaults one of the main character’s friends. As the second friend jumps on the man’s back, the main character walks over to the car and pulls out a crow bar. At this point in the story my interest does pick up. I wonder what is going to happen next and if the main character may kill this man.
This is where I believe the climax of the story is. The main character is facing conflict head on and needs to decide what is the next course of action is. He swings the crowbar and hits the man in the head, which ends his assaults on the three boys. A girl then gets out of the car. The main character then has another decision to make. All three boys walk over to the girl and attempt to rape her.
A car pulls up and the boys freeze. Rather than be caught they head into the woods. At this point in the story all the loose ends begin to be tied up and the conflict and climax are taken care. The main character stopped the man from assaulting them further, which eliminated that conflict, and the car showing up stops them from potentially raping the girl. The strange man did get some sort of revenge by damaging the main character’s car. After the strange man and his buddies leave the boys come out of the
woods. As the story comes to an end, the main character finds the car key near the car. As the boys are leaving a car with females pulls up. One comes up to them and asks them if they want to go to a party, and another possible conflict arises. The main character declines the offer and they head home, which is where the story ends. The elements of plot in this story are quite evident in this short story. Each event the main character goes through creates more suspense and leaves the reader wanting to know what will happen next. The climax and conflict eventually come together and we find out what happened and how the story ended.
Bill comes out to see Mary about to be raped and he starts to fight him. The start throwing punches and then Jack buts in the fight with a gun to try to apprehend Ralph but then the gun was fired. Mary is shot and killed by accident by Ralph but then since Bill was knocked out by Ralph, Jack made him believe that he had shot Mary, his
The story kicks off right away as Duff is leaving his parents’ house in Richmond, Virginia. He is beginning his journey to Los Angeles to be a computer programmer. He leaves his home town in his used three-thousand dollar, white, Ford Escort. He bought the car from the owner of a pizza shop down the street strictly for the long trip. Duff didn’t care much about cars, as longs as they get him from place to place. Duff pulls onto the highway and drives for about fifteen minutes before something goes terribly wrong. A weird noise came from the front of the car and then a loud bang. The car rolled to a stop near a small exit. Duff looked at the engine, but had no hope of knowing what happened. So Duff called a tow-truck which took the car five miles west to a garage in a small hick town. The mechanics diagnosed that he had thrown an engine rod. This usually happens if the engine doesn’t get oiled enough. Duff had no idea of the last oil change since he had only had the car for two weeks.
Elements that make for the best literary short story are character, meaning, tone and tension. These four literary elements make your story have a plot. These elements also contribute to your story’s purpose and ambition. The short stories we have read this semester integrate these elements, making successful and literary filled works.
After a basketball game, four kids, Andrew Jackson, Tyrone Mills, Robert Washington and B.J. Carson, celebrate a win by going out drinking and driving. Andrew lost control of his car and crashed into a retaining wall on I-75. Andy, Tyrone, and B.J. escaped from the four-door Chevy right after the accident. Teen basketball star and Hazelwood high team captain was sitting in the passenger's side with his feet on the dashboard. When the crash happened, his feet went through the windshield and he was unable to escape. The gas tank then exploded and burned Robbie to death while the three unharmed kids tried to save him.

In The First Day, exposition has been applied in various sections. For instance, the story explains that the little girl is taken to the first school preferred by her mother where they are rejected, forcing them to look for another school. This device is used to give a deeper explanation about how determined the mother is taking her daughter to school and how much she wants her daughter to have a better life. This provides the audience with the reasons as to why the mother had to look for another school (Edward, 1950). Exposition is also expressed where the mother collects all documents that she thinks were required even though she could not read. This also indicates that the mother wants to ensure that nothing will prevent her daughter’s
There are many themes highlighted in the short story Greasy Lake, by T. Coraghessan Boyle. Some of these themes include being adventurous, violence, and being young and restless. However, there is a main message that stands out more than the others and is the most centered theme of the story. This is the theme of coming of age through the narrator’s journey to finding out what it means to be “bad,” and whether or not he wanted to make bad choices.
First and perhaps most essential to any story is the plot. The plot is defined as,

The above storyline is an explicit and chronological account of events within the film as a whole. In the case of plot, we need to think of plot as lines of action within the film, the order in which they are organised or sequenced, and who (both
Plot is the essence of a story. It is basically an outline of the flow of a story from one event to another. By examining the plot of a work, one can gain insight into another person's style of storytelling and from that style one can then learn ways to enhance his own writing. The movie, The Fifth Element, contains a plot that unravels very creatively. The screenwriter of the movie chose to tell his story from a future time when humans and aliens coexist. His goal is to explain to the moviegoer the idea that four elements, portrayed as rocks, make up life and one essential element holds these four together to create life and combat evil. He begins his explanation through a flashback sequence that displays the initial conflict, an ultimate evil, which will again arise later in the movie. After the flashback, the movie follows a chronological chain of events. The audience is introduced to the main characters, a man and a woman, and then to the rest of the good guys and the villains. Throughout the course of the movie the characters move through many emotions from fear to hate to sheer joy. In the end, the good guys gather the four elements and are able to combine them together with the essential element, love, to destroy the evil. The creator’s use of common elements such as flashbacks, conflict and the basic concepts of good and evil can be drawn upon to better ones own plot construction.
In Poetics, Aristotle defines plot as “the arrangement of the incidents” (Aristotle 12). He indicates that there are six elements in every tragic play, which are plot, character, thought, diction, melody and spectacle, among these plot is placed in the foremost positi...
