LITERATURE REVIEW

Graphic Design is important in creating awareness campaigns specifically for social problems. These awareness campaigns are designed to help prevent and display social problems in order to bring about social change. This section will take a closer look into addiction, whoonga, awareness and campaigns and how graphic design can influence a successful awareness campaign. This is achieved through a combination of imagery and text, which is used to capture the target markets attention to ensure that the message portrayed is memorable and effective.

Addiction has been a traditional term used to describe self-destructive behaviors, which includes a pharmacological component. This feeling is what results in gambling and shopping addictions. Addicts can spend all their money at the casino and shopping malls until reaching rock bottom, regardless of having a family to take care of. This addiction can lead to homelessness. “Addiction is not merely the chronic use of a drug. Addiction involves the compulsion to use drugs, a loss of control over the time and amount of drug use, and continued drug use despite negative consequences.” (Landry, 1994, p. 7) Drug addiction develops when the individual becomes dependent on a legal or illegal drug/ medication. Once addicted, it is hard to control the drug use, resulting in the continuation of drug use regardless of the harm it causes.
