Graham Greene
The life of Graham Greene began on October 2, 1904 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, in England where he was born into a family of six (“Graham Greene: An Inventory of His Collection at the Harry Ransom Center”). His full name was Henry Graham Greene (“Graham Greene (British Author)”).He was the fourth oldest in the family. As a child, suffered from bullying and dislike for school. (“Graham Greene Biography”)His father was in charge of the school that he attended which could have had a factor in his treatment in school. Later on in childhood, he began suffering from emotional and mental problems (“Graham Greene Biography”). Greene made attempts of suicide such as Russian roulette during this time of mental instability (“Graham Greene”). Because of his mental instability, Greene was sent to London to be treated for his depression (“Graham Greene”).
For his later education he went to Balliol College, Oxford, and his first work, a volume of poetry, was published in 1925, while he was an undergraduate (“Graham Greene”). After he completed college, he began working as a Journalist first for the Nottingham Journal and then the London Times (“Graham Greene Biography”). While working for the Nottingham Journal, Greene met Vivien Dayrell-Browning who was a Roman Catholic (“Graham Greene”).Greene converted to Catholicism and married Vivien in 1926 (Pearce, Joseph). They had two children, Lucy and Francis (“Graham Greene”).
As for his writings, he began in 1926 and had many books published between then and 1948. He published his first novel in 1929, The Man Within (Short, Edward). ...ion, Greene has made a huge impact when it comes to novels that include thrills, kills, and love. He has made a good impact on the outlook of life and the problems that people face. The Power and the Glory is representative of his writings as it incorporates his faith and his travels into a thrilling story. It is based on his experiences, which fit perfectly in with his novels. A great quote from the book that really gets someone going is “Hate is a lack of imagination.” It is from the “whiskey” priest and is about those who hate and why they hate. It is a good quote as it portrays Greene’s attitude towards his critics as he is saying they have no imagination. This novel is recommend to be read because it is a good book that really makes someone reflect on the Catholic faith and the way that we view sin and death. It also gives someone the idea of what sacrifice is.
