The context i got from this political cartoon was that this is a graduation hat that is representing senior student who will be representing the next generation, the future. This is not just a hat this hat is earned by going to school and getting good grades etc. This hat has a quote saying “This hat is what “MAKES AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” ”, This quote or saying is what we’ve heard from our President Donald Trump. Two of the rhetorical features this hat has are symbolism and analogy. This hat is a symbol because it represents the class that is graduating and the people who are graduating, not only is it just the hat but the future (students) is being promoted to go on to college and get a masters or get a degree on something so they will be the
For example, “as Americans, we have quite a proud tradition of being represented by ignorant high-ranking officials.” Moore states students no longer have the information nor the skills needed in their libraries because of the budget cuts, despite that, “the ultimate irony in all of this is that the very politicians who refuse to fund education in America adequately are the same ones who go ballistic over how our kids have fallen behind the Germans, the Japanese, and just about every other country with running water and an economy not based on the sale of Chiclets.” Moore explains instead of helping the future of the United States and making school first, Americans are gaining knowledge that is useless to this society, such as facts about sports, he states, “Why on Earth am I retaining that useless fact? I don’t know, but after watching scores of guys waiting for the ESPN show, I think I do know something about intelligence and the American mind” nevertheless, they lack the information such as facts about own country. In addition, he mentions this nation has an obsession with testing, for example, resorting to testing and believe their problem would suddenly be fixed because of the test results improved. Although he claims Americans are obsessed with testing, he wants the, “so-called political leaders” to be tested the same way they test others in this
“Climb on one’s back and stand on their shoulders to reach the top” this is what the Coronel Colin Powell hints to recent graduate from the Howard University in 1994. The Commencement Speech was long enough to motivate the graduating students. Also, it was proper and formal. When the speech began, Powell was exciting by ending on sharing his own experiences and giving great advices for those future professionals. Powell´s Commencement Speech demonstrates his interest by sharing his thoughts, and its language was uplifting and captivating. (502).
The purpose of Michael Moore’s article is to focus upon the different insights of a society and to point out all of its flaws. As a college dropout himself, he blames the education system and tells the readers about its loopholes. He blames the ills of America on it being represented by ignorant high ranking officers and blames the people for electing ignorant presidents who keep bragging about everything and end up looking stupid. On the other hand, Gatto who was a teacher for almost three decades claims the students as well as the teachers were equally bored at the s...
Millennials are well on their way to redefining the “American Dream.” In a world where they have to constantly exercise critical thinking to financially survive the debts the average Millennial life incurs, suggesting that their reluctance to fall into the status quo will hurt them is a stagnant, inflexible view. It only hurts those entrenched in a narrow worldview limited to one accepted lifestyle and standard of living. To this life, Millennials are thoroughly disillusioned. They’re causing all these economic ‘problems’ because they aren’t buying into the hazy suburban complacency that the traditional dream represents. It’s not just that it costs too much to get there, it’s mostly that it’s hardly achievable. Contemporary high school is less of a system for education as it is an Olympic triathlon. Students must jump through every well-nigh arbitrary hoop, competing against each other for the most scholarship money based on the right opinion said in the right words. Who was in the most meaningless clubs at the same time? Who happened to attend a school with the most extra-curricular activities or AP courses? When school – that
... 40% of the current population (Florida). This in addition to the success found in the Silicon Valley, Boulder, and Austin show that the socioeconomic group, the Creative Class, is not just a short-term group. In fact Florida and other experts believe that the Creative Class is the wave of the future and will continue to group and inspire young leaders. The need to include all races, incomes, and sexual preferences will make this inclusive socioeconomic group the most powerful group in America. This is because if people participate in the socioeconomic group they will benefit if the don’t they will still reap the benefits of these creative individuals who are pushing for change and success. The Creative Class is producing great leaders; great leaders will be able to pick up people and cities that have fallen, in turn promoting economic development and success.
The Gonski Review was an investigation into the way schools are funded. Gonski found the government is investing far too little in education particularly public schools. The cartoon targets both Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbottt. The image can be interpreted as a comment on the leaders’ response to the Gonski report and a wider metaphor for their leadership style. It is critical of both of them and implies neither is working in the best interests of education. Abbott is depicted as arrogant and breaking the rules. Gillard is depicted as hard working, but frantic and desperate.
The political cartoon relates back to the chapter 7 because its broadcast media. I feel that the illustrator is trying to say that the technology that was invented, is not providing the same purpose today. The radio and television were created to inform the society by useful information and news. The man with the headphones states “another copter down in Iraq…” and the other one responds “sorry, no time. Britney shaved her head..” shows that the celebrity story is more important than what’s happening in the world. I feel that the television programs chose the topic to talk about that will increase their ratings. They corrupt that standard that was created between the people and their elected leaders. The media try’s to connect with younger
Welcome back to campus for a great year. Hope you were able to take some time off and get prepared for an outstanding semester. Each month the SAIL organization has put together a series of cultural films that will be shown on campus. The students will be made aware of the movies, but wanted to make you aware as well. If you have any questions or concerns, you may contact myself or Russ Mast, the Assistant Vice President for Student Engagement.
In the article, “The New Greatest Generation: Why Millennials Will Save Us All,” by Joel Stein, Stein expresses his views through a complex game of mind control. He secured his audience, the older generations, in the beginning of the article by writing what they want to hear, then switches to the difficult truth, and finally tells the audience that it only mattered how they view change. His claim, “So, yes, we have all that data about narcissism and laziness and entitlement. But a generation's greatness isn't determined by data; it's determined by how they react to the challenges that befall them,” (Stein 34) demonstrates how much he wants to show his audience the difficult truth, and makes them feel sheepish about judging the millennials.
I'm Liz from your POLI 109 class at 2:00 pm. We spoke last class about how it might be possible for me to get the fee for Top Hat waived. I'll be honest, this is a little embarrassing, having to ask for this, but I could really use the help. I would ask my parents, but, as much as I love them, they're not the most charitable people. After the first snow this year, I asked them for some new shoes because mine had holes in them and snow had gotten inside. Their response: "you're grown ass adult and you'll have to figure it out yourself". My shoes still have holes in them, for the record.
This is what you might see in most of the schools on the first day of school: lost freshmen guided by reliable senior sisters and brothers to classrooms. But McIntosh has a distinct tradition of how freshmen would be welcomed: stickers and glitters.
1. When students are all wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and how they fit in with their peers; which helps them concentrate on their school work.
As I look back upon the past four years, in some ways it seems like my time at Kiper has been a lot like a day at the Magic Kingdom.
Through out life people go through so many hardships. Whether it be good or bad there is always something that comes out of the situation. One of the most exciting but yet scariest events would be graduation. For a lot of people, graduating from high school is a goal. It takes a lot of time and effort to achieve that goal. In the long run, it opens a lot of opportunities for people to succeed. Graduation is the end of high school, and the beginning to life.
Technology has changed modern society drastically, both positively and negatively. Technology has influenced every aspect of our life, making it simpler but not necessarily better. Albert Einstein was concerned about the advancement of technology. "I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction."1 Undoubtedly, what has changed the most are communication, the spread of information, and how business is practiced. Consequently, practically everyone knows how to use a computer, connect to the Internet, or use a smartphone. This is demonstrated by the way the Internet is used daily by millions of people to communicate, to sell, advertise, retrieve, and share information. Thanks to the Internet, information from anywhere in the world is at our fingertips. As a result, the advancement of technology has changed our life in many ways including; sharing of information, communication, business, education, social interaction, simplifying everyday tasks, replacing basic skills and jobs.
