Throughout our life we encounter many significant moments, but our families look out for the most important moment of all, our high school graduation. Graduation for immigrant families is something that not many have achieved. Thus Latin families worry and wait the most for their kids to graduate. Although not many get to live that dream of seeing their kids graduating, some families do and that moment becomes very special to them. First of all, it is common to not have a college or high school education in an immigrant family. Due to the poor opportunities and circumstances in many Hispanic countries, most of its residents don’t study in order to work. Immigrant families sacrifice their education and well-being in order to translate their
families to the United States. Parents take these steps to provide their children with a better life and future. Thus, it is significant for them to see us graduate and thank them that way. For what I know about my family, they experienced very harsh moments, like my great grandmother being thrown out of her house or my grandmother and her mom having to escape from her father. Thus, they weren’t able to achieve a high class education since they had to work. Although my grandmother did go to college and study she never graduated. On the other hand, my father never finished high school, he came from a strict family and was forced to work early on. Therefore, my grandparents and parents dream of seeing me go to college and graduating one day. Last year, I graduated from high school. It felt fulfilling seeing the happiness in my family’s eyes; it was the day they had been waiting for. That day they were convinced and filled with the thought that for once they would see part of their family achieve the American dream and go to college and graduate from a university with a career that would provide them with everything they need. They were also assured that if one day they couldn’t help me, I wouldn’t need their financial help and I would be okay. I couldn’t imagine a better way to honor my family than y living out their dream. Finally, graduation, whether from high school or college means improvement for our families. By graduating we provide our families with pride and guarantee of a better life. Immigrant families fight for our lives and give up their comfort every day. Thereby it is only fair for them that we make their dream come true by graduating and demonstrating that their effort was not in vain.
In Subtractive Schooling: US-Mexican Youth and the Politics of Caring, Angela Valenzuela investigates immigrant and Mexican American experiences in education. Valenzuela mentions differences in high schools between U.S born youth and immigrants such as how immigrants she interviewed seemed to achieve in school as they feel privileged to achieve secondary education. However, she found that her study provided evidence of student failure due to schools subtracting resources from these youths. The goal of this research is to find out why the immigrant students have to face more challenges in the level of education they achieve, the high level poverty that they face in their daily lives and all the confusing networks they have around them which they have no clue of how to utilize it. Also, the research focusses on the fewer resources immigrant students have while achieving their goals. As a young child, I had a feeling of resentment towards my parents as I naively believed that they were not working hard enough to obtain a career that would result in them being able to fulfill the necessities of the family. I thought that my parents were incapable of providing my siblings and I with a stable place to live and with a reliable source of transportation. If we talk about undocumented immigrants in United States, we usually focus on the benefits and jobs they take from our country, but have we ever stood in their shoes and imagine what life is like for an illegal immigrant? To live as an undocumented immigrant is a bad situation, but I believe to be a child of an undocumented immigrant is even worse, because their choices are limited and they are unaware of their rights to attend colleges. For instance, they get pregnant and drop out. There may be a lack of motivation to go to school. They might get married at an early age. Educators, parents, policy makers, and institutional leaders all play a vital role in the advocacy of Latino/a students on their journey towards higher education. Access to information on how to attain higher education and practices needed to plan for the next steps, are necessary in preparing for the future. As the Latina/o population continues to grow in the United States, it is important to understand what their educational outlook is in regards to higher learning. This literature review will examine the roadblocks facing Latina/o students, including, parent involvement and understanding, family influence, preparation programs, and school support, and explore ways in which educators can work towards making college access a more frequent reality for Latina/o students. Parent Involvement and Understanding To begin to understand why Latina/o students find themselves significantly behind their Caucasian peers in college access, we must first look to the home and examine the relationship the parents of this population of students have with higher education.

Latina women are suppressed through Hispanic culture with the ideology that a woman’s domain is within the walls of her own home. However, there has been a greater turnover rates in high school graduates amongst Latinas they are still falling behind due to lack of resources and the restricted patterns of opportunity perpetuated through transformative assets.
Growing up, the biggest challenge I faced was being a first generation Latina student. My family came from an extremely rural neighborhood in Guanajuato, Mexico called La Sandia. Both my parents achieved up to 5th-grade education in their hometowns. They decided to sacrifice their lives in Mexico to provide a better life for their family and then decided to migrate to the U.S to achieve what many people consider the American dream.
