I have been actively involved in numerous public speaking competitions since I was 7 years old, which inculcates my nature of being an outspoken person. I began representing my school for various formal events, became an emcee for almost all kinds of occasions held in school and also participated in traditional dance competition in elementary school. Consequently, I continued to stack up my co-curricular achievements in secondary school . I was elected to be a school prefect and a high committee member of disciplinary board . I consistently maintained my excellent academic achievement by always making sure I keep a good connection with my teachers. After graduating from secondary school , my application to PERMATApintar National Gifted Centre of Malaysia was accepted. Hence, I am currently enrolled in an advanced pure science foundation program, which serves to be a pre-university program. I am also selected to participate in the New York Academy of Sciences program, under administration of Global STEM Alliance; a program called 1000 Girls 1000 Futures. I have been assigned to a mentor from New York University to collaborate work with her during this one-year long program. We are communicating actively, especially when her major is from the field I absolutely love to venture in: Biology. I am required to complete numerous assignments and quizzes for this program and also need to consecrate some time to contact my mentor via video chat. Most importantly, I am learning to get used to forge international relationship s with people around the globe through this beneficial program. I am one out of 5 students selected from my country, Malaysia, to join this program. I also participated in ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Concurrent Pitching Competition in a team of 4. Firstly, my journey began my twelfth grade year of high school. Competing was never a word in my vocabulary or character; I was never the person to stand in front of others and talk, or answer on-spot questions. Fear was a main contributor to my dread of public speaking, there was also a feeling of judgement from others that may have struck the nerves. That all changed when I joined FCCLA; FCCLA stands for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, and has family as its central focus. I had joined FCCLA for the first time in ninth grade, but never participated in anything. For as long as I can remember debating has been prominent in my life full of oppression and constant discrimination. I first decided to join the Speech and Debate club at my school because I saw it as an opportunity to further develop my ability to craft strong arguments. As a student, I am an active participant in my academic and extracurricular activities. My first priority has always been to make good grades and learn in school. Although this is important to me, I also know that by participating in clubs, sports, and after school activities, I will become a well-rounded student. During the past years of my high school career I have participated and received awards in the following: Cheerleading (eight years), twice as captain, '97 -'98 Varsity Letter in Cheerleading, '98 AIM scholar, Who's Who Among American Cheerleaders, and '98 Academic Excellence Award while participating in Virginia High School League Interscholastic Activities. I also belonged to the following clubs: S.A.D.D. club (two years), second year as secretary, Pep Club, Varsity Club, Choir Club, and Computer Club. In the year '99 -'00 I received awards in the following classes: Computer Applications, Spanish I, World Geography, and Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry. I also received an award for Most Encouraging Student. I currently belong to the Hiking and Outdoor Club, Ski Club, Pep Club, and Environmental Awareness Club. In addition, this year I participate in a program called Read With A Friend. In this program I, along with a group of other students, go to the near by elementary school to read to a class of students from kindergarten to fifth grade.
I am an active member of my Sixth Form being a prefect with supervisory responsibilities. I hold the positions of both sixth form committee member and House Captain for my school house. I have performed in the VI form pantomime, The Wizard Of Oz, for the local primary school children. When my school took part in BBC Newsround?s national mock election I was the Party Leader for the Liberal Democrat Party. I designed posters on my computer and helped mastermind the campaign in the school. This involved speaking in a four-way debate between the three party leaders and an audience of interested sixth formers and staff. My hard work paid off and I won my seat for the Sixth Form with an overwhelming majority.
Weekend after weekend, tournament after tournament, high school debate engrossed my life. After coming to college, I did not want to give up the activity. As such, I rechanneled my knowledge into a mentorship role. Once a week, I travel into an impoverished Boston high schools and teach students how to debate effectively and successfully. The students I work with through the Harvard College Mentors for Urban Debate program know nothing about debate. They come in with a blank state. However, through a mentorship process, in the end, they were leaps and bounds ahead of where they started from.
I have never joined a debate club because it required public speaking, and the most debating I have done before high school was arguing in Socratic seminars, so this debate was a completely new experience for me. After graduation from KOREA University, I decided to enter Hyndai MotorCompany(HMC), which is the largest Korean car manufacturer and global player, to pursue a career as an international businessman. In January 1991, I joined Domestic Finance Team of HMC. My specific assignment was to plan monthly and annual financial schedules for HMC's domestic funding needs. About two years later, in January of 1993, I was transferred to Retail Finance Team from Domestic Finance Team and responsible for financing by the sales and factoring of Car Receivables.
First, I have to the best of my ability, attempted to overcome my fear of public speaking in the classroom. Secondly, I have learned about the ways to express myself through the use of verbal and nonverbal skills in creating and delivering a speech. I am now familiar with the three types of categories of public speaking; the commemorative speech, the informative, and the persuasive. With each speech, I learned there were new elements to each. The commemorative speech pays tribute to a person, a group of people, an institution, or an idea. The informative speech uses descriptions, vivid details, and demonstrations to explain a subject, a person, or place to inform the audience on a chosen topic. The persuasive speech uses words in an artistic manner for directing and appealing to the audience's emotions by presenting supportive information, argumentation, or symbolism. With all three speeches, the goal of the speaker is to reach the audience and in return, they will give you feedback. Through this process, I have learned to become a better thinker, organizer, and raised my self-esteem about myself and my disability, and I have increased my knowledge and built confidence in myself as a speaker in
Over these past two years, I have gained a lot of valuable life experiences through the many extra-curricular activities I have engaged in. I have been able to develop my creativity, maintain active, and serve the community in numerous ways. As an individual and a learner, I have strived and succeeded in being an inquirer, knowledgeable, a thinker, a communicator, principled, open-minded, caring, a risk-taker, balanced, and reflective. Besides academics, fine arts and sports in school, I have attained leading roles in different groups. On the first day of my Freshman year I walked into debate class and saw the desks in a format that I had never seen before. The desks were separated into two groups and set facing each other. This symbolized the opposing viewpoints of debate and inspired my will to compete to be better than my opponents. Throughout the semester I overcame my fear of public speaking by learning out to construct an argument, give speeches, and refute others.
Soon other public speaking opportunities arose; I represented an artist named Ann Cross at the Art Walk in Keene and was an active participant on the debate team and the captain in eighth grade. During March of eighth grade, I had the best opportunity ever to practice my oratorical skills: I was selected, out of all the students entered in New Hampshire, to write and read a four-minute speech on national television. My job was to introduce Elizabeth Dole, who at the time was interested in running for president.
