Gradualism versus Punctuationism

Although modern evolutionists are thought to be divided on the issues surrounding evolutionary theory, a close look at the evidence suggests that both the gradualist school of thought and the punctuationist school of thought share many characteristics in common. This is especially true when evaluating their beliefs about the fossil record, disagreement with the theory of saltation, and the misinterpretation of the word “rapid” in terms of punctuationist theory. Although this may be the case, the two theories do diverge on one important point, the notion of periods of stasis, but when taken as a whole, the evidence suggests that punctuationism is not as radical as it has been hyped up to be.
In terms of evaluating both arguments, it is important to dispel the some common myths about punctuationist theory. First, there appear to be many large gaps in the fossil record (Dawkins, 1986). Both gradualists and punctuationists agree that the only explanation for these apparent gaps, besides the notion that there are gaps in the record, would be creationism. Creationism holds that the reason for the appearance of largely different organisms in the fossil record, without organisms that display intermediate amounts of change is the presence of a divine creator. Neither gradualists nor punctuationists agree with this assumption.

    The purpose of Saenz using metaphors in this poem is to allow the reader to understand the spiritual thoughts of the speaker. Meaning it is used to show that the speaker has a yearning for god. For example it says, “You are thirst and thirst is all I know” (Saenz, 691). It is easy to think that the speaker is referring to his biological thirst for water. However, what is actually being expressed is the speaker’s “thirst” for a connection with god. It seems as if Saenz chooses words that can be portrayed and have two different meanings thus it requires readers to dig deeper into the underlying message. In the poem it says, “I was born for you, above, below, by you, by you surrounded” (lines 9-10, 691). The word choice of that metaphor is showing that the speaker is speaking to god and is showing a physical side and his desire for god in his life. Without Saenz using metaphors, it would not be easy for readers to relate and understand as to what his true meaning of the poem

Pruitt also mentions that if the reader were not to come to this conclusion after the “nigger joke” was presented he/she would come to the realization that racism was prevalent in the 1900’s by the social and economic status of the bottom. The soil on which the people of the bottom live on is not considered productive land while the white land is plentiful and rich. Their place of living causes them economic and social distress. Focusing on place, referencing time and location, Pruitt displays how Morrison’s text ultimately shows how the individual does not create their identity but inside and outside their community their identity becomes created. The struggling characters grapple between their cultural identity and acknowledging the emerging cultural fusion.
