I come before the committee humbly asking for another chance to be in the Global Honors Society with an exception. I am also asking for redemption as well. I am proud to be a former Honor Scholar. Being an Honor Scholar has opened so many doors for me. In the fall of 2013, I was offered a position to work as a medical scribe when I graduate from college. But being an Honor Scholar is merely about intellectual pursuit or the benefits that come from it, but it is also about the drive to do well at all costs. The Honors program is also about having heart and determination no matter what life throws at you. It is by no mistake how I got inducted into Global Honors my junior year. My freshmen year I had a 3.84 GPA. My sophomore year I had a 3.70 GPA. I did not P/NC my way in getting a high GPA but I worked tirelessly hard and sacrifice a lot. I have only one P/NC on my transcript. I became a part of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society my freshmen year. I received a certificate for Who’s Who’s in my junior year. I made the honor’s list all my freshmen year and part of my sophomore year. The President of the college elected me to be a VFIC scholar and receive a $10,000 scholarship during my freshmen year.
In my junior year, the pressures of life came rolling out like a storm thus contributing to my decline in my GPA. My fifty-seven year- old mom became hospitalized for 2 weeks during finals during the second part of the semester. She got into a bad accident on her job and she had to receive immediate surgery and had to get 9 plates in her ankle. This did so much damage to me emotionally. And Biology of Women is a very easy class if you do the work. From making these big changes I can assure you I will hit the three point mark. I have a 95 average in my Philosophy Honors Class, his class consists of no tests but you have do critiques and I received mostly all check pluses and I have a 100 average in Criminal Justice 225. In French 177, I received an A- on my presentation her class has no test but you do need to participate and if you don’t like a grade you can redo the assignment over and get a better grade at the end. For senior seminar our grade as not been report but I have turned in 32 pages for my regular thesis and still working on my honors thesis. I have been bless that the things are tuning around my life
In her article, “The Case Against GRADES”, Alfie Kohn discusses the grading system and its faults. She opens her argument with information from an older psychological study that proves the negative impact of the current grading system, and she reinforces this with the proof that “no” research has contradicted this statement. Also, she gives many key reasons including: “Motivation”, “Achievement”, “Quantification”, and “Curriculum”. Kohn supports these topics with other reasearch for why the system is failing the students. I am honored to be among the students who are being considered for the National Honor Society. I must admit that this is a group that I have been anticipating joining since the beginning of my high school career. I believe that I deserve this honor and this chance because I have worked very hard to get here. The National Honor Society is known for recognizing students with grades and praiseworthy character, I believe that I have both. As many people have told me before, it is a very different ballgame than middle school’s easy going years. There is much more work, the classes are harder, and the environment is completely different. Many people’s grades may slip and they may cower in fear at the barrage of assignments they receive class after class. Unlike other people, I am confident in my ability to excel at all classes and to sustain exemplary grades. Therefore, while many are trembling in fear at the prodigious assignments and work is bombarding them from all angles, I will be at ease, knowing that whatever obstacle is thrown my way, I will conquer it and be its own
Being inducted into the National Honors Society is what I have been waiting for. Becoming a member is nothing more than a dream come true, and I appreciate it greatly. If I am to be chosen as a member I know that I will be a positive and dependable participant in society activities. Due to my abilities and past experiences, I can be considered a valuable candidate because I demonstrate the qualities of leadership, service, and character. I do feel that if I am chosen, I will do nothing detract from the prestige and respectability that is associated with the society.
Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. has played a large part in my life in a short amount of time; this organization has granted me the opportunity to attend college through a scholarship. The scholarship that I was granted was through the alumni chapter in Fayetteville; it required letters of recommendations, a transcript, an application, and an essay on what I believe “Achievement in every field of human endeavor” means. Once I received the call that was telling me to meet the representative to receive a letter stating whether I received the scholarship. When I opened the letter, two tickets fell out for the Kappa Scholarship ball, and when I read the letter, it stated that I have been picked to receive the scholarship from Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. The weekend of the scholarship ball, my mother planned a graduation trip for a couple of friends of mine and I to go Myrtle Beach. So the day of the scholarship ball, I drove from Myrtle Beach to Fayetteville to attend the scholarship ball; once I arrived at the ball, I was greeted by many men of Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. When I sat down at the table that they reserved for me and the three other scholarship awardees, I was approached by many men of the fraternity. That night was very spectacular and eventful; the men who had presented me scholarship seemed down to earth, sociable guys. They treated me with so much respect, and talked to me about how I see my future and told me what I could do to be a successful African-American in today’s society. These men set an example of accomplishment and in the short time that we had together, they instilled in me that I should never be content with where I am and I can always do better as long as I have the mind set of an achiever. ...I became so overwhelmed, thinking I could try and pick up my grades, but it was too late for me. I was then failing all of my classes. My mom would call me and check up on me, I would lie of course and tell her that I was doing well all while everything was crashing down on me. I lost all hope, I completely stopped caring. I didn’t even go to my final exams; I knew there was no hope for me. I dropped out. I messed up my GPA horribly. I took a year off and just gave myself some time to mature then reapplied for school at Chattahoochee.
When I initially received the epistle inviting me to apply for the National Junior Honor Society, my inceptive thought was of gratitude for the recognition. My academic success has been a staple in my life since pre-kindergarten. Whether at school or in any other setting, learning is one of my major objectives. It gives me the self satisfaction of obtaining knowledge and sharing it with others. Maintaining an unweighted GPA of 4.0 for the past 2 1/2 years in middle school has not been without challenges, but those trials will help to develop strength needed to navigate through
When notified by a few peers that they had seen my name on a nomination list for the National Honor Society, I was surprised and genuinely flattered. After researching more about what it was, it was an honor to be recognized for all I do every day in order to be successful in life. Every year I make sure I take every opportunity to get the best education I can, like all honors or AP classes. My freshman year, I took AP Biology and have to admit I was initially intimidated, but I knew if I applied myself and kept on going through the course it would benefit me in the long run and I ended with a B and was ecstatic when I discovered that I passed the AP test. Passing one AP course gave me the ambition to go ahead and take more, so next year I plan on taking three AP classes; Psychology, Environmental Science and U.S. History. Along with these, I am very set on dual enrolling. I’m willing to work as hard as I can in order to ensure my success.
As a candidate for membership in the National Honor Society, I believe I possess the qualities that are expected to be inducted in. I have the quality of scholarship portion. As I’ve been awarded honor roll every quarter not only in my high school career but in middle and elementary school as well. I have also worked to receive an accumulative grade of 85 or greater each year. I maintain this while being treasurer for the 2018 class, playing soccer, and running cross country. When I first heard that I was eligible to join the National Honor Society I was quite shocked. The opportunity to join this organization has opened my eyes of all the hard work, classes and grades that I earned. Therefore, I decided to attend UC Davis, which was seven hours away from my home. When I arrived at UC Davis, I noticed her depression started to worsen. Making it hard for me, but yet simple. She is my mom. I could not help to think I was to blame. I thought to myself, "What am I doing here? My mom needs me." I, then realized that she held it together because I was physically there to support her. I was her rock, but I was also seven hours away. Still, I did everything I could to help her. Calling her everyday was a part of my daily routine, as well as taking the bus home at least twice a month. Upon entering high school I expected it to be just as my middle school classes. This proved to be untrue, as I had very difficult and detail-oriented tests, along with much more demanding classwork and homework. Throughout my first semester I struggled to get everything done, such as studying, homework, club meetings, and dance classes. I knew transferring out of the STEM program would provide me with a less strenuous workload; however, I decided to persevere and strive to retain the grade point average I obtained in middle school. Although my grades were not what I was familiar with, the lessons and hardships I experienced during this time will last me a lifetime. I am thankful to have had this experience and learned how to better manage my time, while still being able to maintain my extracurricular activities. Have you ever had a time in your life where you felt like everything was just dumped on you? I did, and undoubtedly it happened just as I came to school at State University. That saying, “When it rains, it pours,” just seemed to fit me perfectly. Within a two week period one of my friends from high school committed suicide, my grandma went in the hospital, and my boyfriend broke up with me. Yet, from these experiences in my life, I grew, more than I have ever grown before. This is why I am writing about it. Although, everyone goes through hard times, there were not many people out there who related to me. That is why it was hard to get help when it was needed. Maybe someone can learn from my experience and be just as strong as I was.
