The earth is shaking and there is a faint shimmering in the air. It seems some kind of disaster is going to happen. In the story, Grace Period, there is some sort of explosion happening because the protagonist sees that there is a thin white line across the sky; most likely a nuclear explosion is occurring because the protagonist notices that the difference in the quality of space. The dog and birds are showing unusual behaviors. Also, the protagonist tries to call 9-1-1, but no one answers. Therefore, there has been a nuclear explosion near the town which the protagonist lives in. First of all, the story starts with “You notice first a difference in the quality of space.” to imply readers that there is an important event about to occur. Normally, when we call 9-1-1, the emergency responders would answer the phone. In the story, all circuits are busy, including the sheriff, highway patrol, and all emergency dispatch centers which are near the town. A recording tells the protagonist that “all operators are busy and his call will be answered by the first available” to display that all communication equipment around the town where the protagonist lives has been destroyed by a big catastrophe. Therefore, we can believe that there was an explosion nearby the protagonist's house due to the fact that all communication equipment has been destroyed for miles around. In conclusion, the story, “Grace Period” is about the time between the protagonist notices that the disaster happened and he died. By the facts listed, we can know that there is a catastrophe happening. Also, from the occurrences in the story, we know that that bomb is a nuclear weapon because it is almost the same as the website, “Nuclear Bomb Explosion Steps.” This website is about what would happen if a nuclear bomb exploded. Thus, the disaster which happens in the story is a nuclear bomb
