1. Gothic Literature
I n the beginning I was very skeptical about what gothic literature really meant. I was not sure what was about or did know so much related to the topic. The only concepts I knew about gothic was that it started during the eighteenth century and that was related to ghost, witches and vampires; although not the way I thought. When we started the class I imagined that we were going to read ghost stories and scary novels. Stories such Frankenstein, Dracula, or the invisible man. Although I know that in the course outline was said that those topics were not going be part of the course. But I my vagueness I thought that we were going to see something similar to those, but by my surprise it was not. What I thought was going to be spooky changed to something mysterious-that instead of fright myself it altered my emotions with suspense. I did not know that at first; here is when I learned that gothic literature was not intended to be scary or gloomy but it was in the other hand intended to be a new literal genre. Something revolutionary that could change the point of view and ideology of people from the eighteenth century. Then after the Italian and the monk I was able to understand the difference between terror and horror and how they were the bases for the creation of future works. Pieces like the Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe or Dracula by Bram Stoker. In the same way I also see the evolution of gothic form Horace Walpole to what we now know as a ghost stories, horror novels, dark and gloomy poems or mystery stories.
