In the opening to his book entitled, "What is Goth?" Aurelio “Voltaire” Hernandez explains: "To the mundane, Goths are weird, black-clad freaks who are obsessed with death; they are sad all of the time, have no sense of humor, and are potentially homicidal" (p. 2). Despite the outcry for equality from this subculture, many Americans fall prey to this stereotype because of the many negative connotations from the media. The Columbine High School massacre, the Dawson College shooting and the murder of Pamela Vitale by Scott Dyleski are but a few of the ways the media has misled the public into thinking the Gothic subculture, as a whole, was responsible for these atrocities. In each case, it was proven soon afterward that the people responsible were not a part of the Gothic community, but rather mislabeled by ignorant media reporters.
The Gothic subculture is not to be mistaken for: the Germanic tribes that defeated the Romans, the once-popular form of architecture in Western Europe, or the literary style, although this is from where the term etymologically stems. The modern Gothic subculture began as a more "romantic" or "literary" offshoot of the Punk movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Punk itself was a rejection of most of society’s values, and the Gothic movement is no different. As Punk died in the early 1980s, Goth survived and grew into its own subculture, originally keeping the core "rejection of society" attitude. As time passed, this attitude transformed into more of a “no more blind acceptance of societal values” instead of rejection for its own sake.
The first use of the term "Gothic" is often up for debate, and many would cite the media's description of the music of the Doors or "Diamond Dogs" by David Bowi...

...erous; in fact, most Goths detest violence. They do not want society’s approval or its acceptance, the Gothic community just wants to be able to live their lives, no matter how much black they choose to wear or not wear. To quote “Voltaire” once again, "Take a close look at the Goth scene, however, and you will find a rich tapestry of ideas and practices and a menagerie of colorful characters. Oh, dear. I said 'colorful'" (Hernandez 2).

Dave Cullen includes descriptive language while providing accurate information based on research he has gathered in the past and to this day continues to study. “There is a photograph. A blonde girl lets out a wail. Her head is thrown back… she became the image of columbine.” (Page 101)
Gothic Literature was a natural progression from romanticism, which had existed in the 18th Century. Initially, such a ‘unique’ style of literature was met with a somewhat mixed response; although it was greeted with enthusiasm from members of the public, literary critics were much more dubious and sceptical.
In the cases of school shootings that took place at Columbine High School, Sandy Hook Elementary, Virginia Tech University and Northern Illinois University, the media highly publicized the fact that the perpetrators were avid video gamers, but why is this important? The media want’s your attention and they are more than willing to say almost anything to get it. They reported that the perpetrators were avid gamers with the implication that there is a well establish connection between the two when there is not. They exploit the fear of parents and concerned citizens by not including relevant corresponding information in order to leave you more interested lea...

For the heart of the matter is theological, a category that does not often appear in American public discourse. Instead, we hear talk about psychology, community, exclusion - the narrow, modern litany of cause and effect. David Mandel, a psychologist who has studied the Goth subculture - one of the causes being invoked - wrote last year, "It is not sinister, but tongue in cheek." And he continued: "People who are really into it use it to construct meaning in their lives. . . . They really find beauty in the dark things much the way others find beauty in bright, happy things" (Mandel...

Family environment and the press are two major influences resulting in the recent tragic school shootings. As much as society continues to focus the killing rampages on factors such as television and music, what children are exposed to in reality contributes to the violence. The most recent school shooting in Michigan involved a six-year-old first grader who killed a classmate with a .22 caliber pistol. The news coverage had vanished after two or three days, and I was left wondering what had happened. Considering the fact that the media wore the Columbine incident out, I wanted to know why they did not pay more attention to this school shooting. As evidence did arrive, it was discovered that the child lived in a household where cocaine, heroin, and many other illegal drugs were commonplace. Also in this “home” guns were easily accessible to the child. Children growing up in this type of environment certainly are likely to be held accountable for future violence. Even though I am against the news media presenting too much school violence, Americans should have been deeply disturbed by this shooting because of the child’s young age. The Michigan shooting should have enlightened Americans to the dilemma we face in this country. Two weeks after the Columbine High School shooting, information on the mass murder was still being broadcast on television. The press was feeding young viewers ideas on how to kill their classmates. News was reported how the teenage murderers acquired information regarding building bombs, obtaining guns, smuggling guns into the school, and proceeding to kill their classmates. A mentally unstable teenager could simply watch these news reports and write a book entitled, “How to Slay Your Classmates”. This onslaught was ridiculous and the news coverage should not have been permitted to continue for countless weeks. Society has determined three reasons on which to blame the shootings. First, the nation blamed it on television’s violent programs. Following that, Americans gave the music recording companies the evil eye as well as attacking the gun manufacturers. All of these reasons involve material objects that are unable to think for themselves. Televisions and CD players do not control themselves, people control them. Finally, boundaries controlling the television programs children view should be set by the parents. The same explanation applies to firearms. How can it be a gun’s fault that a person killed another human being?
The term ‘Gothic’ conjures a range of possible meanings, definitions and associations. It explicitly denotes certain historical and cultural phenomena. Gothicism was part of the Romantic Movement that started in the eighteenth century and lasted about three decades into the nineteenth century. For this essay, the definition of Gothic that is applicable is: An 18th century literary style characterized by gloom and the supernatural. In the Gothic novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, a wide range of issues are explored. Frankenstein represents an entirely new vision of the female Gothic, along with many other traditional themes such as religion, science, colonialism and myth.
Looking at Gothic Horror The horror genre remains very popular with cinema audiences even nowadays because the special effects today make creatures look even more terrifyingly realistic and it also means that you can film stunts or scenes like somebody turning into a werewolf for example, much more easy to film and much more effective. An example of a modern horror film that consists of very effective special effects is 'Underworld' that makes use of computer generation to make some impressive transformation scenes. The advances in technology give modern horror films an edge over classics and a modern audience expects a lot more from a horror film nowadays.
The The word ‘Goth’ is originally from a German tribe and has come to mean. ‘barbarian’ and later known as ‘Gothic’. In Gothic Literature certain features are expected to be added. These are supernatural events, have villains. and hero characters, strange weather, horror, mystery and death.
There is rarely a single moment in history when one can pinpoint the exact moment when a subculture emerges. It’s a slow building of multiple influences. However, one can definitely pinpoint where the Goth subculture was first identified. Splintering off of the British punk movement, the term “Goth’ was coined in the UK by journalists and public figures in the music industry as early as the late seventies and caught fire in the eighties. In Valerie Steele’s Gothic:Gark Glamour she recounts, “The earliest significant usage of the term (as applied to music) was by Anthony H. Wilson [part owner of Joy Division’s label] when he described Joy Division as Gothic compared to the pop mainstream” during an interview on a BBC program regarding the band’s upcoming record (127). Many people credit Bauhaus as the true grandfather’s of Goth with their release of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.” David Thompson and Jo-Ann Greene, “Undead Undead Undead” The Study of Gothic Subculture, uncover that Bauhaus’ intention with the song was tongue-in-cheek, according to frontman Peter Murphy (?). But, the presentation of the song and the band’s aesthetic took to its fans and the Goth subculture was given birth. In addition and along side of Bauhaus, Siouxsie Sioux of the Banshees ...
What is America Gothic? The American Gothic movement started around the same time as the transcendentalist movement. Gothic writers unlike transcendentalist writers believed that life wasn 't all rainbows and butterflies. They saw it as a cruel and sometimes menacing place. During this time Gothic writers wrote about the true evils and that even the nicest person could have some of the worse demons.
In the United States, there are certain inalienable rights granted to all. As the Declaration of Independence of the original thirteen colonies states, "among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."(Jefferson, 1787, Declaration of Ind., Pg. 1) These rights are not "special rights." While the U.S. government cannot hold back upon these rights, it does have the power to ratify and enforce laws that will enable or restrict its citizens' use of them.
