When Abigail Williams and a group of young girls begin to accuse innocent people of witchery out of their own fear and evil, the devout Christian residents of Salem village in 1692 joined the mass hysteria. Ultimately, the prosecutions of innocent people resulted in twenty deaths, which included the execution of John Proctor. Although the faith in religion and fear of witchery blinded most of the citizens, John Proctor’s affair with Abigail allowed him to discover the lies the girls were telling. The coexistence and duality of good versus evil in the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller is portrayed through the deception of Abigail. The beginning of the presentation focused mostly on the evident existence of good versus evil. Although all the residents believed they were removing the evil and bringing purity to Salem, all the readers found otherwise and thought that the killings of innocent people is the true evil in Salem. The project was able to demonstrate this idea through the use of an outside poem, which discussed good versus evil, and the use of a written haiku. The entire message my group and I were attempting to show was meant to be universal and allegorical. The chosen poem was universal in the way that it could be applied to many other circumstances, like how we used a political cartoon to connect the events in The Crucible to those of terrorism and islamophobia. Also, we concluded our presentation by incorporating a activity of class involvement, our jeopardy game. To create our jeopardy game, this involved us revisiting our two column notes to find material to make questions with. The some questions involved knowledge the class should have know from their reading; however some questions were meant to challenge them and ask them questions about our presentation and play they may have forgotten. The class should find the chosen images and each choice made to be well thought out. For instance, the political cartoons selected and how those ideas relate to the play. Through the images chosen and the poetry used, the class should be able to conclude many uses of good versus evil in the play and how a story from 1692 can relate to McCarthyism, terrorism, and even bullying. However, the presentation should enable to class to question themselves about their own identity. This could have derived from some of the essential questions of ‘what brings out the evil within people?’ and ‘does evil come from fear?’. The events that took place in the Salem witch trials illustrate the human nature of good versus evil, and the application of today shows that these ideas are still relevant today. Also, the gameshow aspect of the project should allow the class to summarize their entire learning throughout reading the novel, and ultimately give them a better understanding of the
