Good “Role” Model As a student, I am expected to be on time, be attentive in class, study for tests, complete homework assignments, earn acceptable grades, and respect staff members. Being an A/B student, I struggle in every one of these areas every day. As one would predict, role conflict is common as a student. Trying to manage a full schedule of classes as a senior can sometimes feel like I am constantly juggling priorities. While I try never to completely neglect one of these responsibilities, I do not value each of them equally. The expectation I struggle with most is being attentive in class. Ever since elementary school, school has been an entirely different battle for me than for my peers. The ADHD diagnosis I received at age seven …show more content…
Junior year I lightened up my schedule for the second semester and enrolled in an ACT prep class. I bought three different ACT prep books and filled every page with pen and highlighter. After February 7th of my junior year, I was an average student with a 34 ACT. I knew that from then on a scholarship was a dream in reach. When I read a letter from the University of Alabama at Birmingham at the start of senior year, a weight was lifted from my shoulders. My ACT combined with my master status as a student had helped me achieve the status I had always sought for: a scholarship recipient. As a scholarship recipient at Alabama, I was expected to maintain an acceptable role performance as a student for the remainder of my senior year, stay involved in school and in my community, enroll as a UAB freshman on time, and keep from breaking rules listed in the fine print of my scholarship contract. My role performance in this area is not perfect, but acceptable. It will not be easy for me to remain this role throughout college, as a 3.45 GPA is required for me to renew my scholarship every
Upon the completion of my high school career I was faced with the sudden realization that I was growing up and on the verge of becoming independent. A few months prior, I had applied to Montana State and received my acceptance letter. The future was before me and my ambitions were truly limitless. That is, until the fact set in that I was going to have to pay for this education that I desired. I knew that with my busy schedule, I would be unable to make enough money while only working a few hours here and there. I was beginning to lose sight of hope. Then one day I talked to my counsellor about what I could do and he pointed me towards dozens of scholarships that I could apply for. The exigence or purpose
I endeavor to obtain excellence in my academics; I wish to exemplify scholarship by constantly asking the whys and hows of things. I will not let a bad grade define who I am as a student or who I will become. I also want to take the most challenging classes available, not because it will look good on my college application, but because I genuinely love the concept of learning and discovering new things. Education doesn’t end after high school, so I plan to attend university, eager to attain the knowledge to better understand my world: and expand it.
When I was growing up, I struggled a great deal in school! In third grade I started a new school. They had three tiers of classes. One with the regular kids, another with kids that needed a little bit of help in math and reading, and thirdly, a category that had mentally retarded children learning life skills. I was being placed in that third tier. I absolutely loved school before they had placed me in that class. All that
I know that through my hard work and dedication I can make my goals a reality. However, it may not be possible without these Scholarships. While my parents will help me in any way they can, I am hoping that my hard work and dedication to my studies pays off. I am a very self-driven individual who will accomplish any goal I set my mind on achieving. I am also aware of how without scholarships I may face a financial setback. I am hoping that through the help of scholarships I will be able to achieve all my goals in a timely
Growing up, I never would have thought that I would be diagnosed with ADHD. Throughout my first few years of schooling, no problems arose. But as classes became more difficult and demanding, my symptoms became more apparent and were just no longer bearable. It was at this time that I knew that I had to get tested for ADHD. Being diagnosed allowed me to regain my focus in the classroom, but it also significantly changed my life in ways I never predicted.
It was during my second year of high school that I first heard of the Pruitt Memorial Scholarship. I suddenly felt hope for my future. Hope that I would be able to attend college, and hope that I would be given the chance to fight for my very large dreams. My passion is theatre and my goal is that someday I will be able to teach others about my passion and spread the magic of theatre around the world, but to be able to do that requires lots of education. The Pruitt Memorial Scholarship opened the door for me to pursue this dream. Now, I just had to acquire the scholarship, and that meant performing volunteer community-service.
As a student, I know that we are the future for society to thrive on. We are told again and again that the knowledge we gain will further ourselves into the world, and for our college, there are rights and responsibilities us students must follow to maintain a working community for other students, teachers, and staff. To ensure a healthy and happy college experience, we must earn the same equal rights as every other student through academic opportunities, learning, and financial aid. Students are supposed to be responsible for choices made in college as it is beneficial for our future; however, most importantly we need to be responsible for maintaining academic honesty, meet staff expectations, and taking control of our future.
With celebrities all over the media, it is expected that some are idolized by their fans, especially the youths. There nothing wrong with people making celebrities their role models. Celebrity role models can be a positive influence by changing people’s lives and way of thinking for the better. On the other hand, when impressionable kids and teens see their celebrity role models do something that is not morally sound, they will come to think that it is acceptable making it more likely for them to do it. This raises the question: should celebrities be role models? For the most part no. Role models are people that are admired by others for their accomplishments and not their status; however, many celebrities
Growing up, my siblings and I didn’t have a father-figure to look up to. I didn’t care. As I grew up I realized that I have a female role model in my life, which was my mother. My brother, however, didn’t have a male role model to show him the ropes of life.
Everyone has challenges in their life and mine were speech and depression. From preschool to second grade I had to take “special” classes because my English was far more behind than everyone else’s. At the time I didn’t notice anything different, though now I realize that without those classes school would of been twice as hard. I overcame this challenge by simply going to school and learning. I found out that school can help with anything, for this reason I love learning to this day. I began noticing a negative change with myself throughout middle school, which now I classify as my second challenge, depression. I’m still not exactly certain if it is just depression, seasonal depr...
Role models have an astounding effect on the lives of young people in our society. A role model has the ability to shape the views, ideals, and actions of a young person. Role models help youth to discover how they wish to become in the future. The influence that role models have over young people is tremendous. It is important for role models to be positive and responsible in instilling good morals and values because future generations are directly dependent on the role models of today. By examining the influence of role models, role models in the community, and role models in the media, we will be able to determine the true effect that role models have on the lives of youth.
A servant leader is a person who makes serving a priority in their life. I grew up volunteering in my community on a regular basis; however, it wasn’t until college that I was able to understand the impact of serving your community. Thanksgiving, my dad a law enforcement officer would volunteer at restaurants serving the homeless so service has always been a part of my life. With that being said, there is a huge difference between being forced to do community service and wanting to serve your community. A lot of times we become so consumed with ourselves and our egos that we forget about those who helped formed who we are today. As humans, we should strive to work and exist together at equilibrium.
Being raised with no father figure has an overwhelming effect on boys who are becoming men. Boys need role models in their life to teach them how to be a man. Without this boys have a chance of growing up to be men with issues. Such as relationships problems, their emotions can be unstable, they may have behavioral issues, and they may grow up not knowing how to be a father to their own child.
School began interesting for me my last year of high school. School was always important to me, but I never had a passion for it. However, I always put myself in a position to find a passion for school. I never skipped class, I never talked back, and I did my best to stay engaged in every class at all times. A desire to succeed in school did not happen until my final year of high school. I made it my mission to do well in school even if I had not found a passion for school. With my Dyslexia and my ADD, I have always struggled in school, and still struggle in school. I did not discover my Dyslexia and ADD until I was in the 10th grade. The doctor said I relied on my intelligence to create other ways to find the answer which masked my disabilities.
My experience with school was very challenging and overcoming my personal struggles was not an easy feat. I started Kindergarten with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and I’m thankful that my preschool teacher recognized my learning challenges and encouraged my parents to have me evaluated. We found out that I had ADHD and learning disabilities that would make academic achievement a challenge for me. More specifically, I had difficulty decoding words and pronouncing some letter sounds such as “R’s” and “W’s”. As a result, excelling in school was a challenge due to my disability and the reaction of other students to my disability only made it more difficult.
