In The Destructors by Graham Greene there is a group of kids that are in a gang. The gang does some bad things but in the story they have a few good moments. The good moments may be overlooked by the bad regardless the good qualities are subtle yet meaningful. The boys may be tough and do crazy acts of destruction they still have a heart and care about things. For example when the gang takes care of Mr.Thompson when he is stuck outside of his house. They give him a blanket and want him to have a good night even thought they are the reason he does't have a house. They say " there is nothing personal we just want you to be comfortable for the night." This shows they have good hearts and want him to be safe in times of need. In addition the gang is different then others in different stories because you rarely see a gang of boys do a kind act in addition to the bad one. For example in the book "Lord of the Flies" there is a group of "bad boys" they do a few wild …show more content…
For example when the boys have meeting about the plan. They listened to it and didn't argue or try to go against it like you may think. "Had a sense of urgency and already he could begin to see the plan." The boys went along with it, going back to the " Lord of the Flies" there was a designated leader but the "bad boys" argues with his plans and didn't listen. In addition we see a sense of care for Mr.Thompson while they are doing bad thing to him. The boys overall do more bad than good as we can tell in the story. Although their good qualities are admirable since they actually do somewhat do have good moments. Furthermore the way the gang works together is good and unlike most. There cooperation with each other and kindness towards Mr.Thompson while they do bad things is not common for " bad boys" in stories. The boys bad traits dominate the story but we shouldn't disregard their few kind
This story talks about how Edward Perry and Alfonso led the gang, and why kids wanted to be a part of it. It also focuses on Bobby Gore and David
Each group of young boys holds a significant meaning in our everyday life. firstly, Jack and his hunters represented the Nazi’s or a more current group, Donald Trump supporters because they are people who unfortunately fail to think before they proceed with an action. Secondly, the younger children are similar to the powerless citizens since they act like sheep and follow whoever is in command. Finally, the good boys who are Simon, Piggy and Ralph act like the rational people of the world who use their brain, facts and judgement. Sir William Golding produced an allegorical novel because behind every aspect in the novel a deeper meaning been yet to
In the “Lord of the Flies” savagery gets the best of the boys. The boys have lost their humanity and let things get out of hands and ended up killing an innocent boy who they thought was a beast. “There was no laughter at all now and more grave watching. Ralph pushed both hands through his hair and looked at the little boy in mixed amusement and exasperation.”
...e better and the Socs to be worse. Being tough and tuff were the two things required in each group, but not every individual were able to be the two things. This caused some individuals not to be themselves for the gang. Internal and external expectations changed the group to be better or worse. The Greasers were expected by others to do bad things, but they were able to prove they could be heroes. The Greasers are disgrace to the society which helped them to strive to become real heroes. While the Socs were to pressure by the high expectations they decided to rebel. The Socs took advantage which led those group to be a disgrace, although no one ever thought the Socs were capable to do bad things. Society should stop being judgmental to avoid changes that make other worst. The only expectations people should make is to help other people to be the best they can be.
For the children of the projects, the pressure to join a gang never waivers. Quick cash and protection are hard forces to resist in a world of poverty and violence. However, the children's role in these gangs is inferior to that of the leaders. At first, the concept of joining is quite attractive. According to Lafeyette, one of the two brothers profiled in the book, " 'When you first join you think it's good. They'll buy you what you want' " (31). However, " 'You have to do anything they tell you to do. If they tell you to kill somebody, you have to do that' " (31).
Gangs have been in existence since the beginning of the Roman Empire. There were speeches made by Roman orator, Marcus Tullius Cicero, which references groups of men who constantly fought and disrupted Roman politics (Curry, 2013). The history of street gangs in the United States begins with their emergence on the East Coast around 1783, as the American Revolution ended. Though many believe the best available evidence suggests that the more serious street gangs likely did not emerge until the early part of the nineteenth century (Sante, 1991). Although our country has had their share of feared gangs like in the 1980’s with the turf war between the Bloods and Crips, back in the 17th and 18th century the Mohocks of Georgian, England were one of the most feared gangs. What draws juveniles to the gang lifestyle? Many people will say that most gang members are children from impoverished communities, single family homes where there was no father present, or maybe there is a more psychological/sociological answer? By appearance and presence most gangs cause fear, crime, and disillusionment in the communities they occupy. Throughout history joining a gang has been perceived as a life without any reward, yet by joining this lifestyle many juveniles are able to gain the needed stability and security in their lives.
There are many aspects that determine how humans behave around one another. This is shown throughout William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies. This book is about a group of British boys that are stranded on an island without any adults due to a plane crash. At first, all goes well; the boys cooperate in attempting to maintain the fire signal, gather food and making shelters. However, human nature takes over and their democracy that they have created fails. This leads to the majority of the boys becoming complete savages when the evil within them takes over. Different qualities help determine whether a person is a good or a bad leader. Although, Piggy and Jack have some leadership qualities, Ralph is the best leader.
In spite of this, this novel proves that civilization has the power to keep one’s innate cruelty under control. The instance of a society running rampant with evil is seen when the group of boys abandon the civilized behaviors of the adult world, and predominately begin to take in Jack’s vicious influence on them. Thus, as the boys began to act more barbaric and savage, they do not feel the need to listen to Ralph's wisdom and guidance anymore. If they had listened to him, Piggy and Simon, in all likelihood, would not have had to die, and many wise plans would have been followed. Overall, the author reveals that due to the savage and violent nature of humans, qualities of physical power are more prominent than the often under looked qualities of civility and common intelligence in
In Lord of the Flies, William Golding expresses the idea that humans are naturally immoral, and that people are moral only because of the pressures of civilization. He does this by writing about a group of boys, and their story of survival on an island. The civilized society they form quickly deteriorates into a savage tribe, showing that away from civilization and adults, the boys quickly deteriorate into the state man was millions of years ago. This tendency is shown most in Jack, who has an animalistic love of power, and Roger, who loves to kill for pleasure. Even the most civilized boys, Ralph and Piggy, show that they have a savage side too as they watch Simon get murdered without trying to save him. Simon, the only one who seems to have a truly good spirit, is killed, symbolizing how rare truly good people are, and how quickly those personalities become corrupted.
The West Side Story portrays the lives of two different gangs living in America, as well as their beliefs and examples of living a good life. The expectations of what people consider the good life to be may vary on a person’s morals and their dreams of what life is truly about. In this movie, whether or not these characters were good people, lived a good life, or lived in a good society is a very controversial topic.
In the Lord of the Flies the boys began to act in a savage type of way. They began to compete for power and where more than willing to act in a violent manner to get it. When Jack and Ralph split up into different groups, Jacks group was stealing, torturing and killing people in Ralph’s group. These actions were due to the situation and environment these kids were put in. They originally came from a civilized nation and then suddenly they found themselves in an environment where there were no laws or morals that kept them from doing bad. They could now act like savages and there was no punishment for doing so. Not to mention the fear put into everybody about “the beastie” makes people act differently. Fear makes people do irrational things,
Gangs originated in the mid 1800’s in the cardinal direction using it as a method to defend themselves against outsiders. The idea of gangs became populous, powerful, and a broad influence. But like all powers, they tend to corrupt and recognizes violence as a way of getting what they want faster than other methods. They turn violence into fun, profit, and control.Creating a situation that affects youth in today’s society.
The kids innocence, and them being naive leads them to believe that most everyone is good, because they have never really encountered evil before. When they are encountered with evil, the evil of racism and things being so unfair, and whirls them into an adulthood state of mind. They both have to balance the ideas of good and evil that are in a person, they used to believe you could only be one or the other, but in reality, the good is within the evil and vice versa. Even the good main character, Scout, has some evil within her, she constantly gets into fights. The theme is displayed heavily through Boo Radley, a man who they believed was evil, bt really was misunderstood and showed himself to be good. Then Tom Robinson, a man who is believed to be evil based off his skin color and the evil accusations made about him, but who is reality is good. The kids can see he is good, because the ideas of racism haven’t infected their innocent brains yet. But they encounter evil when an innocent man is punished, and the evil man who is racist and lying gets away with
It seems as though there is so much more evil than good in the world today. We hear of war and fighting 24/7 but we rarely hear about the good things that happen. Everyone is born with both good and bad within them. We, as humans, must choose which one we want to be. In The Lord of the Flies, Ralph is good while Jack is evil. Ralph represents the good side of us while Jack represents the evil side. Although sometimes it is easier to be evil, it pays off to be good. The novel is a perfect example of how all people are born with both sides. At the beginning, the boys choose the good side, with morals and civilization. But as the story moves on, the boys find it more exciting to be on the bad side. It shows that all the boys are torn between good and bad and there is a very thin line that separates both. We realize that people are born inherently good and bad because in life there are always right and wrong choices, children are born good but are easily influenced to do bad, and it is always harder to do what is right than what is wrong.
The word evil is find on the dictionary as wicked, sinful, bad, likely to cause trouble. On the other hand, good has a meaning of beneficial, honest, noble and pure. In society, evil and good mean different things to each person, what is holy for one person is damaging for another. Historical fact that establishes that humanity’s evilness is part of their nature as human being, people born with abomination. Experiments as the Milgram and the Stanford prison experiments show the wickedness of the society. Indeed the Lord of the Flies by William Golding brings to light the theme of evilness versus good. What makes this novel attractive is a group of boy, trying to survive on an island making effort to live with civilization to avoid the war in the group. As the time approaches the behavior and the real personality of each one of theme reveals itself. As in each one of the experiment there is a chief, in the novel, Jack is a leader that takes advantage of his authority to have control over the other boys. Above all, for some people in society evilness is learn from the people. In contrast, evidence attests that evilness triumphs over good.
