Good And Evil In Frank Beddor's The Looking Glass Wars

In the book The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor, Wonderland changes. The fight between Good and Evil starts when Redd attacks. Alyss escapes Redd without her knowing that she is gone. Redd believes she has one once and for all when all of a sudden Alyss appears alive in Wonderland and is growing in strength and comes to reclaim her queendom. By having Alyss come back years later Beddor shows how in good vs. evil good will always come back and beat evil. Beddor shows this when Alyss first leaves evil won, when Alyss comes back she sees that Redd has destroyed everything but Alyss had grown in power and nor evil or good was winning. But Alyss faces Redd for the final time to stop her reign and she defeats Redd and the good side won.
A sign of good vs. evil is when Alyss first leaves and Redd rules. When Alyss went into the Pool of Tears first, the Cat was supposed to kill her but she made it into the pool safely. A tree in the woods said,“‘You let them get away,’ a voice said.”(86). During the time when Alyss wasn’t in Wonderland Redd had been ruling, a rebel team called the

Alyssians fought to make their old queendom good again because under Redds rule everything was evil. Redd kills everyone and anyone who is standing in her way. Queen Genevieve was protecting Alyss and the queendom. So Redd went up to her, killed her, then proclaimed, "’The queen is dead. Long live the queen...me’"(67). But when Hatter Madigan returned he finds out that Wonderland is now evil but Alyssians were working to change that but had no luck because, “‘It’s been a long time since anything good happened”(185). Evil had won at first.
When Alyss comes back from the Pool of Tears, Dodge Anders takes her for a stroll near her old home.

He did it because, “‘She’s destroyed everything,’ Dodge said. Resignation to the past, defiance of the present, hope for the future--Alyss felt them all at once. ‘Not everything,’ she said. Not if she had hope.”(248) She had seen her castle and home in ruins and then she was ready for revenge. She looked to her friends Dodge, Bibwit, Hatter, General Doppelganger, and the Rook. They needed Alyss to get to the Valley of Mushrooms where the caterpillars are and they would get the answer to where the entrance of the Looking Glass Maze is but they are being chased until they finally make it there. The caterpillar said, “‘You seek the Looking Glass Maze, as your mother did before you.’”(284) They continue to search for it getting closer and closer. Neither good or evil prevailed this

time.
After trying to find the maze for a while they are ambushed and Alyss has to go past them and get into the maze. When she gets in, she goes right up to Redd and then kills her but that was the wrong thing to do. She is in a different place now and the caterpillar tells her she lost but, “Failure’s not an option. She would rather have been anywhere else, but she couldn’t leave yet. Not as a failure.”(310) So Alyss goes back in and gains full power. Then the Alyssians do a sneak attack on Mount Isolation, Redds home base. They are winning then Alyss fights Redd and almost loses. Alyss started attacking and defeated Redd by, “‘I'm stronger than you are, Redd.’ ‘You will not defeat me!’ Redd screamed. Alyss braced herself for another attack, realizing only too late what was happening. She watched with disbelieving eyes as Redd launched herself into the Heart Crystal.”(347) Alyss had won once and for all and took her place on the throne as queen.
Throughout the entire story the winning side has switched from good to evil as it goes on. At the beginning of the book Alyss leaves and Redd becomes queen. Then Alyss comes back and starts to grow to enough power to defeat Redd for the sake of the queendom. And finally she faces Redd and defeats her on Mount Isolation. The theme of good vs. evil shows how when evil is winning, good will always come back to prevail.
