Good Advice
When we first started to talk about good advice, I didn't fully understand what makes good advice, well, good. "Advice is advice." I said to myself, walking home from class trying to think of where to start. As the subject grew in class, everybody started to get deeper into the subject until we all had a well-based understanding on what good advice is. Everyone had a little different perspective than everybody else, which made the subject very interesting. I realized that there are many requirements for good advice.
Looking back on my paper, I realized that I made one point about good advice, which was the only point that I really looked at. This point was how I viewed good advice at that time. I think advice is good when it lets me approach something by myself, so that I, as an individual, can grow with what I learn from it. As apposed to forcing some orders upon me. By ordering me around, the advisor can’t get me to think about what is right for me. This way, I will never learn and it will do me more harm than good in the long run. I still stand by my original opinion, but since then I have learned much more about good advice.
Then I heard about the second part of the paper and I was interested in taking notes on people's papers because that day in class, I realized that I could get much more deep into this subject. When I took the notes, I was amazed by how different the advisors were from paper to paper. The advice came from teachers, parents, friends, experts, mentors, and even themselves. This made me realize that advice can’t always be expected or unexpected because I will never know where it will come from. John also made me realize that personal advice is best when it comes from somebody that knows ...

...dvice. The biggest connection with good advice and writing isn't within the phonics or the way it is written. The biggest connection is within the total thought process of both of them. If I want to write a good paper, I should sit and think about it. I should ask myself, "Who is the reader, and what should I do to get the desired effect from them?" This is the same with advice. In writing, I should take the time to think personally about what I want to write about. I’ll analyze the situation like I am giving very important advice. There has to be a connection between the reader and I. The second connection is where I shouldn’t jumble up advice, otherwise it won't be good. The same goes with writing. Size doesn't matter, but I should get to the points I want to reach, otherwise I’ll lose the reader's attention. If I follow this advice, I will become a better writer.
11. Through the shift from first to third person and vice versa the technique strengthens his essay. With Gould’s usage of nouns and pronouns which refer to himself, the audience's attention is directed to that idea or concept. Provided that the essay had instead just been in third person, the monotony would have been too overbearing to target and decipher the real purpose. Using first person adds in his personal aspect about this research, ultimately making him seem more relatable and understanding, instead of just the
One quote that stood out to me was “I was struggling to express increasingly complex ideas, and I couldn’t get the language straight: words, as in my second sentence on tragedy, piled up like cars in a serial wreck” (2). This reminds me of when my parents would always tell me to keep writing during my younger stages. Sometimes, through my essays I would give up because the words that are in my head wouldn’t spill out. So, I would become stuck and would consistently ask for help. I literally felt like I was stuck behind traffic, and couldn’t get out until an hour later. However, one good point brought up by Bailey was “I believe that school writing and personal writing are completely different, where school writing can be right or wrong but person writing can be anything without any consequence.” I feel like school writing can play a big role in how one may decided to use their words. If there’s a big essay due; there is a high chance that expressing high complexed ideas would be a lot more harder; than through personal writing because the ‘A’ is a lot more important than actually understanding the context. Another quote I agreed with was, “developing writes will grow… if they are able to write for people who are willing to sit with them and help them as they struggle to write about difficult things” (2). This goes along with my
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
In conclusion, Dr. Blalock and Mrs. Kuznicki have similar and different mentoring style. Each style of guidance can influence the mentees. Dr. Blalock and Mrs. Kuznicki both criticize people with strong words when facing a mistake made by other people, they will acknowledge and compliment on the success that other people made. However, Dr. Blalock has short temper and do think mistake is a good way to learn. He almost sends Thomas away because of an incautious mistake Thomas made during a lab research. Different from Dr. Blalock’s impatient behavior, Mrs. Kuznicki think that mistake is a good way to learn. She taught me many things after I made a mistake during speech practices.
To beginning, I must first define advice. Advice is any guidance given with the goal of alternating a perceived
There are many interesting quotes and advice given in this book; five statements stood out that I felt are worthwhile.
Cliques tend to be exclusive, only accepting those who are similar to them such as their interest in sports, after-school activities, hobbies, or even by appearance and other superficial things. They also tend to leave out all the kids who are “socially awkward” or different, and they bully others to make themselves more powerful to their peers. High school cliques form for various reasons, all of which provide safety in numbers. Teens in high school cliques basically allow their members to be comfortable with kids with whom they can identify. Every clique is different and has different personalities and interests. High school cliques get challenged when someone new enters the picture. The particular group has its already established members, and they are threatened and afraid of how their social group will affected if this newcomer enters. They don’t allow the newcomer to be included in their group. The New York Times, author Tamar Lewin explained “Adolescence has always been a time of identity formation, with inclusion, and exclusion, trying out new ideas, styles, and friends. And good looks, athletic prowess, academic achievement, and money have always helped to define the social terrain.” As teena...

When dissecting Adler’s testimony concerning the profits readers gain when thoroughly annotating a piece of literature, I found myself persuaded to look at each detail of a page to a deeper effect. His emphasis on needing patience and a strong work ethic in order to see future rewards perfectly not only applied to literary works, but also other slow processes such as the college application process. By incorporating writer’s thoughts “into] your bloodstream” (1), information gets preserved and further analyzed for years to come. The act of physically interpreting statements as if you were inquiring or joining a thought “preserve[s] those reactions and sharpen[s] those questions” (2).
With the intention of sounding impressive, novice writers use pretentious language because they believe that this makes them sound knowledgeable on the topic they are writing about. Many think that they sound smarter when they use big words. The truth of the matter is that smart writers who really u...
A lot of people (mainly parents) say that video games have a negative effect on children because they think it causes them to become greatly distracted, violent, socially isolated, addicted, and teaches them the wrong values such as vengeance and aggression. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that playing video games actually impacts your brain in many positive ways. It teaches people abstract, high level thinking skills people will need in the future, and changes the physical structure of the brain the same way as learning to write, read, play an instrument, and navigate using a map. Playing videogames are not bad for people however, some people may disagree.
while researching for my secondary research, many scientists have found that video games can actually benefit the person in many ways! For instance, scientist had conducted an experiment where they found that video games can benefit the gamer in spatial performance, reading skills, academic ability and self-esteem (Witt al. 2011). These characteristics can improve a person mental ability, especially reading, as it can help elementary schoolers improves their reading skill at a level they will enjoy.
Many studies have focused on cognitive differences of video game players, as a group, in comparison to non-gamers. Although observational studies are essential for studying, it is also important to examine video game training itself, and the potential causal influences of video gaming on novice players' cognition. Prior experimental investigation of the cognitive consequences of video gaming provides evidence that cognitive and perceptual changes occur in those who transition from non-gamers to gamers. Playing action game has been linked to enhanced core perceptual processing. Action video game novices assigned to action video game training experience a number of benefits, including higher contrast sensitivity, faster visual information processing , expanded useful field of view , and logical comprehension. This array of studies is a promising indication that video game training can lead to improvements in cognitive test performance. On the other hand another video game training study carried out on younger adults with little gaming experience did not find improved performance on cognitive testing after video game training on either a real-time strategy game, an action video game, or a puzzle game. Overall, previous work indicates video game play can lead to improvements in both perceptual and cognitive performance. The majority
Many wonder if video games have an impact on the brain. Video games are very popular in society today, with million of players, including men, women, and children. The article, “Brains on Video Games”, is research from six experts who researched the impact video games have on the brain. Based on their studies, video games have not been proven to have effects on the brain, but affect individuals in many other ways.
Social cliques happened for different reasons. According from another online web source, ‘’the way high schools are designed their size, their level of diversity and the way they treat students can either drive students to segregate’’(Thompson para 6). This confirms why social cliques happened in many schools. Groups are a hunk of our nature and can’t be terminated if they keep on advancing to occur by nature(Giang para 6). This means that you can’t get rid of social cliques and they occur in our nature based on many different
