Golf Course Management (Superintendent) Amateur golfers across America all go to the golf course to seek relaxation and enjoyment of the sport, but don’t always think about the hard work that it takes to keep their favorite golf course up and running. So who is in charge of the entire golf club? Golf course superintendents are basically in charge of operating and maintaining everything related to the club, including directing employees. To be a successful superintendent, you need to be a good communicator, along with having a high range of knowledge in science and business. A golf club would fall apart without a superintendent because there would be no sense of leadership or direction within the club. Teenagers in high school …show more content…
Golf clubs are constantly making sales and buying needed supplies to keep it up and running, much like any other normal business. Golf courses also have to promote and market their club to the public. Marketing plans could range from billboards on nearby interstates to ads in the local newspaper. A golf course superintendent oversees all business roles within the club. This includes the pro shop, the golf pro, and assistants in the office. (Careers in Focus: Sports, 6) Although golf is the major sales producer, the pro shop brings in a lot of revenue as well. The pro shop is a place that everybody who comes to play golf at the club will see at some point, so that means the superintendent must maintain the shop regularly. If the superintendent forgets to check the inventory and causes the shop to have a lack of items to sell, then the clubs sales will decrease. The superintendent is also in charge of keeping the costs under control in order to maintain the given budget for the entire golf club. Whether it means finding ways to minimize prices by buying in bulk from major golf merchandise companies or just decreasing the number of items bought, it must be done regularly. (Careers in Focus: Sports, 7) Golf course superintendents also must make sure everything that’s needed for maintenance of the actual course, such as pesticides and fertilizers, are purchased on schedule. This is yet another part that must be managed in order to stay in line with the budget of the club. If a superintendent doesn’t order the pesticides or fertilizers when they’re needed, then the health of the golf course will decline. This is yet another way that shows how important a superintendent is to a golf
The agency I chose to do is the Hillandale golf course, which is located in Durham North Carolina. The reason why I chose to do my project on Hillandale golf course because since the beginning of the semester I have been traveling over to the golf course twice a week for a class learning the rules and the way the game of golf is played. Hillandale golf course is named the “Granddaddy golf course of Durham/ Research Triangle golf”. Hillandale was donated to the Durham area back in 1911 through the philanthropic interests of long-time Durham resident John Sprunt Hill. Donald Ross and Perry Maxwell originally designed the course. Donald Ross had designed the first 9 holes and Perry Maxwell came up with the last 9 holes. Since 1960 over 1.7 million rounds of golf have been played that being an average of 45,000 yearly. This public golf course provides a challenge from each level of players in the game of golf. In 1960, the Hillandale Golf Course was moved to its current location in Durham and was redesigned by George Cobb, who is also the designer of the Surf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
6AM. A young man wakes up, showers, and eats breakfast. He then continues to his bedroom, embellishing himself in the simple yet characteristic mixture of white and khaki. He continues to his place of employment, breathing the soft scent of elm and grass. Within the caddie must lay the characteristics of a well-rounded, young adult, embodying the work ethic of those most inspiring before him. Charles “Chick” Evans, who once was a caddy and worldly renowned golfer, appreciates the fine young adults that have endured the morning wakeup call everyday in the summer. To whom that are applicable can ultimately be awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship. Named after Chick Evans himself because he dropped out of college in 1912 for lack of money, the scholarship is funded by donations from golfers and the proceeds of an annual professional tournament (Spears, 1995). Although Chick Evans has passed away many years ago, his legacy still lives on through the 825 scholars currently enrolled in 19 universities all across the United States. Chick Evans has made a profound have impact on the golf community and caddies looking for a way to pay for college.
Ms. Hall shared several insights to the superintendence and advice for those aspiring to be one. One insight that she revealed was the importance of really knowing the district. She spoke about the importance of truly understanding the district's heritage, how people relate to it, and what they expect from it currently. This allows her to really prepare for the deep changes that she planning. Her greatest piece of advice was that a superintendent must be willing to build relationships with all stakeholders. She feels that a superintendent must be an instructional leader and a politician of sorts in order to be truly effective.

The game of golf is one of the oldest of today’s modern sports. Its exact beginnings are not known; however, some historians trace golf back to the Stone Age while others claim it originated from the “idle antics of shepherd boys knocking small stones into holes in the ground with a crook while their flocks grazed nearby” (Peper 1). Researched back to the time of the Roman Empire, it is also believed the sports-oriented Romans played a forerunner of the game of golf called paganica. This sport involved the use of a bent stick and a ball stuffed with wool played in the open countryside.
Golf is the ultimate battle between man and nature. It is a beautiful sport in which dreams come true and hearts are broken. Man is challenged on every stroke by nature’s elements. Wind and rain are only a few of the conditions that affect this great game. Undulating hills, sand bunkers, thick rough, and even creeks and ponds come into play on most golf courses. These features are fierce at Augusta National Golf Course. Located along the fall line, the natural beauty of the region is the perfect complement to this championship golf course. Every spring when the flowers are in full bloom, Augusta plays host to The Masters Championship and is transformed into the Mecca of Golf.

I guess it started when I was about twelve years old. My father took me to this place called a golf course. I did not know why or what we were here for, but I was interested in finding out. We entered a building called a clubhouse; then, he paid for a bucket of practice balls. I followed him to the driving range. Once we got there, he got a metal stick from his golf bag and gave it to me. I grabbed the stick, and he showed me how to hold it. Then, he told me to swing it. I swung it back and forth as careless as I could. He then said, "Son, you have one of the nicest golf swings I have ever seen." I did not even know what I was doing with that stick, but I guess my dad saw something I didn't. My father then decided that he was ready to teach me how to use the three clubs of golf: a putter, iron, and wood. He handed me the putter, and we went to the green. He explained to me that a putter is used on a green to get the ball into the hole. I took a few smooth swings back and forth to get a feel for a putter. He said, "Hit this ball until it goes into the hole." I was impressed with myself because it only took me six hits to get it in the hole. He laid twenty balls on the green, and he told me to hit every ball in with one shot. It took me about three hours, but I accomplished what my dad told me. He thought I was ready to try the next club, so we headed to the next location. We went out onto the fairway, and he handed me an iron. He laid out some more balls on the ground and told me to hit them towards the flag on the green. The first ball I hit did not even get close to the green. The rest of the balls I hit went either over or on the front of the green, but I never let another one fall short. My dad said, "Keep practicing until you hit all of the balls on the green." I kept practicing until all of the balls were laid up around the flag.

Callaway Golf Company began to take form in 1983, after Ely Reeves Callaway Jr. sold Callaway Vineyard and Winery for a $9 million dollar profit. Shortly after the sell of the winery, Callaway ventured in to the golf equipment industry and bought 50 percent of Hickory Stick USA. Callaway knew from the very beginning that this company’s profits were limited as long as the product line wasn’t changing. “Callaway noticed that most golf equipment had changed very little since the 1920s and believed that , due to the difficulty of the game of golf, recreational golfers would be willing to invest in high-tech, premium-priced clubs if such clubs could improve their game by being more forgiving of a less-than-optimum swing.” (Thompson, c205) Callaway then purchased the company outright and changed the name to Callaway Hickory Stick USA and then hires Richard Helmstetter as the companies’ chief club designer. With the help of five aerospace engineers, Helmstetter developed line of clubs that was set apart form competing brands by its technological innovation. In 1988, the S2H2 was launched as well as another name change to Callaway Golf Company. In 1992, sales are more than double recent years and Callaway Golf Company goes public and begins trading on the NYSE. Throughout the 90’s, Callaway leads the golf equipment industry with ongoing new lines of clubs and eventually adds golfing apparel. Donald Dye, Callaway’s new CEO, took the much of the blame for the downturn in Callaway Golf Company. Dye was ultimately responsible for initiatives that took managements focus off golf clubs. The company’s financial and market performance suffered immensely in 1998 causing Ely Callaway to return to rebuild the company. The textbook states on page c208, “Ely Callaway’s first efforts upon his return to active management at Callaway Golf were to ‘direct resources---talent, energy, and money--- in an ever-increasing degree toward the creation, design, production, sale and service of new and better products.’” In Callaway’s turnaround strategy, he initiated a restructuring program and operational improvements. By the end of 1998, Callaway’s strategies allowed the company to regain it s technological leadership.
Although many Americans enjoy working in their yards and maintaining an attractive landscape, they may not realize the tangible benefits of their efforts. These same benefits are available on the golf course where the combination of mowed turf, trees and natural areas provides a diverse environment for people and wildlife. Preserving these green spaces improves the environmental quality of the entire community.
The town I grew up in, in central Minnesota has this small little golf course. Now to the average person who did not grow up here in my town would not even bat an eye at it and think it was a run down crappy course. To me though this golf course is one of the best places in the entire world and when I am here I can just be me. Here I can escape from the world and all of my problems and just be me.This place has shown me what hard work can accomplish and how much fun it can be by doing so. It has also changed my perspective on the world and impacted my life in so many ways and that is why I picked this place to relate to my beliefs in the world.
