Topic: The Gold Coast

General purpose: To inform

Specific purpose: To inform the audience about the beauty of the Gold Coast and how it serves as a big touristic attraction in Australia.

Central idea: The Gold Coast attractions vary from the endless shorelines to the thrilling theme parks and finally to the exotic rainforest.

Introduction

I. Have you ever dreamed of being on an endless stretch of beach and sand? Well I have and there’s a place like you haven’t seen before. Endless shores, breathtaking waves along a strip of skyscrapers, a rainforest that is not too far from the amazing coastline and practically everything a tourist could ever wish for in a city that rarely misses the sun.

II. I’m talking

about a city that is famous for fun; the gold coast is one of Australia’s favorite playgrounds. It is one playground that I wanted to visit so bad, just like any student in Australia that had just graduated from school, over there they call it “schoolies”, a party destination visited by all school graduates for a whole week of fun. Since I couldn’t make it there because of my overprotective parents, I have always dreamed about it and today I would like to inform you about the wonders of the Gold Coast and why it serves as the biggest tourist attraction in Australia.

I.

Let us begin with the location of this wonderful place, The Gold Coast is located in the south-east of Queensland, only a one hour drive from the south of Brisbane, which is the capital of this state.

A. It is a fast growing city of a half a million people, drawn by the miles of perfect coastline.

B. According to the Gold Coast convention and exhibition center, some of the quick facts about the city are “Gold Coast is famous for its weather boasting 287 days of warm, bright sunshine per year! Summer is from December to February with an average temperature of 19-29 degrees Celsius (66 to 83 degrees Fahrenheit). Winter is from June to August with an average temperature of 9 - 21 degrees Celsius (48 to 69 Fahrenheit). The subtropical climate with an average water temperature of 22 degrees encourages an outdoor lifestyle anytime of the year.”

II. Now that you have been acquainted with the location and some facts about the city, let me begin to describe its various beaches that stretch along a shoreline of 70 km.

A. The central Gold Coast skyline looks like a gathering of giants and underneath you have the incredible beaches. It is not only aimed at crazy party students but it has an aspect dedicated to family, vitality and having the time of your

life.
1. Along this shoreline, you will arrive at your own piece of paradise called “Surfer’s Paradise”; it is really a complete destination on its own, a glittering resort, shopping and entertainment strips. And to get a breathtaking view of it, head to the Skypoint observation deck, to see the gold coast’s beaches unfurl in a twenty mile ribbon of sand scattered with headlands, parks and waterways.
2. Just to the south of Surfer’s Paradise is Broad beach, where the pace begins to slow. The further you move down the coast, the more relaxed the vibe.
B. As for Burleigh head beach, it is home to a stunning national park, and it is where most surfing tournaments occur because of the great surfs that it offers. And of course not disregarding the magical views it has of Surfer’s Paradise.
1. A little further south is Currumbin, a place where the bush meets the beach; you can hit the waves between Elephant and Currumbin beach or just go for a float in the sparkling serenity of the history.
2. Then follow the shorelines south to the Gold Coast’s most southern beach side neighborhood: Coolangatta. It is just a five minute drive from the Gold Coast’s international airport. Coolangatta is the region’s gateway for most international and inter-state visitors with its shady parks and sheltered beaches. It is a popular choice for families and when the conditions are right, it produces one of the most spectacular surfs in Australia.
( Transition: Now that you have become familiar with the many different beaches that the Gold Coast offers, let me shed light on the other aspect of touristic attractions that the city is known for and that would be its wide variety of theme parks.)
III. The Gold Coast offers plenty of thrills besides its fabulous coastline. It is the theme park capital of Australia.
A. This aspect specifically encourages couples heading for a little bit of relaxation to get their kids with them, where they will be sure that they will also have the time of their lives.
1. You could spend the day riding the waves and waterslides at Wet ‘n’ Wild; it is widely known to be Australia’s biggest water theme park.
2. Just after you cool off and return to dry lands, you have just up the road the famous Dream World Park, which is the biggest theme park in the nation, it offers over 40 rides for all ages and theme lands like Tiger Island.
B. There are a wide variety of theme parks; the Gold Coast never fails to provide endless options for kids and adults.
3. For example, you could experience Hollywood on the Gold Coast at Warner Brother’s Movie World and take off on some of the craziest roller coaster in the land of down under.
4. For every experience that you wish for, there is a place for it on the Gold Coast. If you are an ocean lover, you could also experience that at SeaWorld, a place where you could encounter the most endearing creatures and you could enjoy a view of the less cuddly ones too.
(Transition: It is all fun and games on the shoreline of this magical city but let me take you on a journey behind the scenes of it all.)
IV. And behind of it all is the impressive hinterland, often referred to as the “Green behind the Gold”. Where you can settle all the nerves from those theme parks.
A. It is just a thirty minute drive inland, and it is perched high on the rim of an Ancient volcano, it is called Mount Tambourine.
1. There are many different walks that you can embark on, like the rainforest trails and skywalk.
2. Walking through this rainforest would offer you views to the beautiful valleys and spectacular waterfalls and nature’s magnificent architecture.
B. I think many of you have watched the movie “Avatar”, and this place is so reminiscent of Avatar’s “Pandora Island”.
1. It is widely believed, according to a National Geographic article by Annie Fitzsimmons, that this mystical rainforest inspired the producer James Cameron.
2. The tropical rainforest can serve as a great muse for such an out of this world movie, with its out of this world trees, birds and wildlife.

Conclusion

I.

In conclusion, The Gold Coast offers a wide variety of fun and entertainment and some quiet leisure time in the midst of it all. It is a destination that is alive from sunrise to sunset; the beaches of the Gold Coast provide entertainment and relaxation for many all year long. The theme parks will take you on a different journey, one that would give you the thrill of your life and the rainforest will widen your imagination and relax your nerves in its beautiful environment

II. It is a place that I dream to visit because of its many wonders, and of course because I was denied access before so my curiosity for this land is immeasurable, as I am sure it will be up to the expectations of most people.
