“Mexico started the war” Said president James Polk. Mexico declared themselves a country in 1821 from Spain there mother country.Texas was part of Mexico, but Texans didn’t like being treated unfairly and related there problem to the American revolutionary.Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836.Texas became a country for 10 years before being annexed by the united states in 1845.Texas had become a slave state. Well,this isn’t true however, because as stated in the War Message by President Polk, the American officers were only sent to determine if the Mexicans had crossed the river yet. The Mexicans did start the war. According to the War Message of President James Polk “They became engaged with a large body of these Mexican troops after a short affair, some 16 Americans were killed and wounded, appear to have been surrounded and compelled to surrender.” This was a big event, especially since the Americans didn’t do anything to Mexico. America said this was our land so we were doing nothing wrong. They just started shooting at us in may,9,1886 , which was one the reasons why they would to go to war with Mexico. Also, as stated in the Background Essay, “When word arrived on May 9, 1846, that Mexican soldiers had fired upon Americans on the (Texas) side of the Rio Grande, President Polk had a reason for going to war.” This quote clearly illustrates why the President had the right to declare war on Mexico. If there is blood shed on our land, especially in this situation, we are justified in declaring war. Even if the Mexicans thought that it was their land, they definitely should not have shot at us.
