The Hobbit by Tolkien is a very comical fantasy book. Tolkien gives the book background by adding history. History how everything started and came to be in the world. While the folklore adds mystery to what happened in the past and what is prophesied. Throughout the story different creatures sing different songs related to their past time. Blood and other characters are seen talking in riddle to new characters. In the Hobbit by Tolkien everyone has a history or past time combined with the songs of their ancestors. There are 3 main historical parts of The Hobbit dwarves, goblins, and the hobbit. The folklore/history plus the songs/riddles shows the personality and gives the characters motive.

They are seen as evil slimy cold blooded creatures of the world. They seem to have enemies with everyone around them and hinder the good of the world. For example, “Now goblins are cruel wicked and bad hearted. They make no beatiful things , but they make many clever ones (Tolkien 69).” Goblins do not like the dwarves thanks to the goblin wars. They love to kill and torture their captives with the weapons they are know for building. According to Tolkien’s the Hobbit, “Hammers, axes swords, daggers, pickaxes, tongs, and also instruments of torture they make very well, or get other people to make to design, prisoners and slaves that have to work till they die for want of air and light(Tolkien 69).” When they capture the dwarves the only thing they look forward to is to eating them. The goblins were very happy after catching the dwarves as shown from the song they sang, “Clap!Snap! the black crack!/Grip, garb! Pinch, nab! And down down to Goblin-town/You go, my lad!(Tolkien 68).” Luckily the dwarves escape their clutches to oddly meet again The goblins set a fire under the trees the dwarves were in and started to sing a song about setting the dwarves on fire and roasting them alive. To illustrate in Tolkien’s The Hobbit it states, “Fifteen birds in five fir trees/ the feathers were fanned in a fiery breeze!/But, funny little birds, they had no wings!/ O what shall we do with the funny little things?/ Roast ‘em …show more content…
They dress in bright colors, have fat bellies, and deep fruity laughs. They have soles on their feet and have light brown hair on their head and feet. They have good natured faces and importantly no magic. There is a particular brand of hobbits that are highly respected. In Tolkien's The Hobbit it particularly states, “The Bagginses had lived in the neighbourhood of The Hill for time out of mind, and people considered them very respectable, not only because most of them were rich, but also because they never had any adventures or did anything unexpected:you you could tell what a Baggins would say on any question without the bother of asking him(Tolkien 4).” The hobbits are very know throughout and never do anything unexpected. Thanks to that they have a higher reputation than their Took counterparts. Unlike the Tooks the Bagginses don’t go on adventures. That is why it was so surprising for a hobbit like Bilbo to go on an adventure. The Bagginses live in little, comfortable, and cosy hobbit holes. They often hold visitors so the hole has to be hospitable to comfort their visitors. When hobbits have nothing to do they smoke to tobacco to please themselves. Throughout history they are known for being very nice and have no enemies, but that doesn't mean their not on the bottom of the food chain. The Bagginses just want to stay secluded and not become extinct. They think by adventure it is a greater chance to strike
Many showed up in groups of three or four, so that Bilbo couldn’t just turn them all down. They later asked him to come on their adventure with them. The dwarves had told Bilbo about their treasure that was stolen and Bilbo suggested that they go to Lonely Mountain to reclaim it. Bilbo really doesn't want to but feels forced to go. They left a piece of Bilbo's notebook paper on his mantle under a clock showing all the dangers he might encounter. Gandalf had come to tell him that he was going to be late if he did not leave soon to be with the dwarves, causing him to feel forced to go. In the movie, however, Bilbo Baggins is presented with a contract from the others involving his burglar services that he will use on the journey with them. He grabs a backpack before he runs out to catch up with the others. This makes the movie more realistic because no normal person would go on an adventure without grabbing anything for the long journey ahead. Bilbo now had a few items from his hobbit hole that would remind him of his home. The book shows Bilbo as more of a reluctant hero. In the book, Bilbo finds the letter on the mantle and decides to go at the last minute. He seems to have felt pressured, resulting in just running out of the hole and not grabbing any of his belongings. He leaves
The Hobbit This hobbit was a hobbit, and his name was Baggins. Baggins had lived in the neighborhood of ”The Hill” some time, and people considered them very respectable, not only because most or them were rich, but also because they never had any adventures or did anything unexpected. You could tell what a Baggins would say on any question without the bother of asking him. This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected. He may have lost the neighbors’ respect, but he gained- well, you will see what he gained in the end.
J.R.R Tolkien's action packed, fantasy driven, inspiring novel The Hobbit shows the message that everyone must know, that you should never give up even if all hope seems to be lost. It shows setting of evergreen forests with villages scattered along the paths of which they must take and mountains just on the horizon. The read must go along with bilbo baggins a hobbit that does not realize there is more to him than just being a baggins and that he will live up to his family's name. Even after gandalf tells him that he will embark on a great adventure he still doesn’t believe he is anymore than just bilbo. Therefor this story is inspiring and shows that with the setting, character, and theme combined make this story a great read.
At the beginning of the novel, Mr. Baggins starts out at his comfy little hobbit home, but suddenly a grand, wise wizard shows up. Not long after, 12 dwarves began to appear, one by one at Bilbo’s door, and they have come to carry him off on a life-changing adventure, full of greed. That was the beginning of our hairy hobbit’s transformation from a shy, quiet hobbit, to a strong and bold life-saving hero, who enchants any who come in contact with him. For example of his strength and boldness, would be in chapter 5, when Bilbo rhymes riddles for an unknown creature, who calls itself Gollum. Bilbo would’ve been eaten if he were to have lost, but took his chances, and risked it anyway. After all, it did get him out of that goblin-infested cave.
Bilbo is happy to visit the elves and have tea with Gandalf, but he is also just as happy to relax in his hobbit-hole and enjoy the comforts of home that he longed for so much on his journey. Bilbo Baggins undergoes a hero’s journey in The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. He departs from his home, is initiated into a more mature mindset, undergoes a road of trials, goes through his innermost cave, and is returned home and reintegrated into society. Bilbo’s journey is also a quest for self identity, because he realizes his place as “quite a little fellow in a wide world” and learns to balance out his respectable Baggins heritage with his adventurous Took background (Tolkien 363).
In fact, when they were in the tunnels with the goblins, the dwarfs did not even notice when Bilbo became lost, and they were about to go on without him. Also, they always relied on Bilbo to get them out of trouble. Just like they were almost killed by the spiders and Bilbo came to their rescue, they made Bilbo go into the secret tunnel because everyone else feared Smaug, the dragon. Consequently, Bilbo almost becomes scorched from Smaug. Mr. Baggins who is considerate, noble, and reliable is the only one that could reward them with such a great fortune.
This story begins with a small fellow by the name of Bilbo Baggins. This fantasy story was written in 1956 by J.R.R. Tolkien. It is about a hero’s journey through the dangers and wonders of Middle Earth. Although it was not meant to become such a well-known book, it is filled with much literature. Throughout the book, Tolkien uses literary devices such as repetition, similes, and metaphors to develop the theme of cunning and cleverness.
Bilbo Baggins’ hobbit hole is his happy home, where for fifty years he was content to stay to avoid the dangers and uncomfortableness of the outside world. Through the novel, it is home he most often thinks back to, and ultimately where he has to leave in order to go on his adventures and grow. His attachment to his home can be contributed to three factors; it’s physical comforts, its protection from the outside world, and its representation of social standing. The hobbit hole, the narrator tells us, means comfort (11), and it explains to us the comfortable furniture, the pantries full of food and closets full of c...
