The star-crossed lovers archetype refers to when two lovers are unable to join together due to some reason or conflict, and this style of story has been presented in a variety of different ways throughout history such as novels, poems, and movies. The creator and most famous writer of the star-crosse lover archetype, William Shakespeare, wrote the Shakespearean play known as Romeo and Juliet in the sixteenth century which is still widely known today as a masterpiece. Inspired by Shakespeare’s play, Disney composed their own modern telling of the story in the year of 2011 titled Gnomeo and Juliet, which follows a similar plot and addresses the same archetype. Both the play and the movie share many parallels and differences between each other …show more content…
Both stories begin with a feud between two opposing sides, one being the Montgues and the other being the Capulets, where two youthful characters fall in love at first sight without knowing they are both of opposing families. Due to this conflicting love in both stories, it leads to many tragic events that are similar and different in each telling. In Gnomeo and Juliet, instead of Romeo and Tybalt battling to the death, they race lawn mowers to prove who is more powerful. In one particular scene in the film, Tybalt is chasing Gnomeo on a lawn mover after he invaded into the Capulet garden and the mower crashes into a wall shattering Tybalt, which leads to the Capulet gnomes accusing Gnomeo of his death and chasing him into the road where he gets …show more content…
On the contrary to the play, Paris in Gnomeo and Juliet is chosen for Juliet, however he ends up falling in love with the Nurse and does not die for Juliet like Paris in the play, This is significant because his love for the Nurse instead of Juliet kept him alive in the end, which proves the theme of how passion between people can overcome obstacles. In the beginning of the play, Juliet uses reason and her intellect to make her choices, but as the play progresses, she becomes more dependent on her emotions and passion similar to Romeo. Conversely in the film, Juliet uses her reason more often than not to make her decisions unlike Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, however Juliet in the film ends up surviving with her beloved Gnomeo. This is important because it signifies how Juliet in the play chooses her passion for Romeo over reason, which leads to her death. If she chose reason instead, she would have lived happily like Juliet in Gnomeo and Juliet, thus demonstrating the theme of how passion can be disastrous and cause

Can you imagine meeting someone, falling in love with them immediately, and getting married to them all in a little over three days?! Well that’s exactly what happens in Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, and Gnomeo and Juliet written by Kelly Asbury, Andy Riley, Kevin Cecil, Rob Sprackling, Steve Hamilton Shaw, and John R. Smith. In these two stories there are big and small similarities, and differences between the characters, setting, and plot events.
Romeo and Juliet, the tale abhorred by all high school students. The archaic language, the sappy love story – it’s no wonder that a chorus of groans occur whenever the name Shakespeare is uttered. The main characters in Romeo in Juliet are unsurprisingly Romeo and Juliet – the star-crossed lovers. Romeo and Juliet are lovers whose families are engaged in a feud for many tears. Despite this, their love flourishes. However, the pay still concludes in a tragedy, because of the character’s flaws. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo’s desperation and impulsiveness, Juliet’s maturity and rebellion, and Tybalt’s cockiness and aggression.
In reality, there are a lot of remakes of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but none of them are quite like Kelly Asbury’s Gnomeo and Juliet. The name itself is pretty bizarre. Gnomeo and Juliet takes the audience on a rollercoaster of different emotions: hatred, hope, happiness, pity, and even anger. Gnomeo and Juliet is very different from the original, but somehow they are still very similar in character’s traits, the fight between the families, and the theme areas.
‘The difference between Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo & Juliet (1968) and Baz Luhrmann’s version of Romeo & Juliet (1996) is simply a modernisation created by Luhrmann to attract a teenage audience.’
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragic love story about two young lovers who are forced to be estranged as a result of their feuding families. The play is about their struggle to contravene fate and create a future together. As such, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood would try and emulate Shakespeare’s masterpiece. This had been done before in many films. Prominent among them were, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo and Juliet” and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.” Both films stay true to the themes of Shakespeare’s original play. However, the modernised Luhrmann film not only maintains the essence of Shakespeare’s writings, Luhrmann makes it relevant to a teenage audience. This is done through the renewal of props and costumes, the reconstruction of the prologue and the upgrading of the setting, whilst preserving the original Shakespearean language. Out of the two, it is Luhrmann who targets Romeo & Juliet to a younger audience to a much larger extent than Zeffirelli.
The similarities and differences of the play and the movie affect the ending in many
Two lovers, different in beliefs, yet the same in thoughts and feelings, are set to have a tragic ending in their life story. In William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare portrays differences between the love of Romeo for Juliet, and the love of Juliet for Romeo. Many people often wonder why this love between Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet did not turn out for the best. It is not their love for one another that finally breaks them apart from the world, it is the way they love one another. The couple struggled to the death trying to make their passionate love work out with each other, but their many differences kept coming up in their lives and getting in the way of their love. While Romeo is a Manic lover and Juliet is an Erotic lover, their love is more likely to be star-crossed.
I preferred Romeo and Juliet to Shakespeare in Love because Romeo and Juliet felt like a tragedy, while Shakespeare in Love was sad at the end but there wasn’t as much bloodshed and violence, and nobody in Shakespeare in Love were bitter and heartbroken at the end besides Shakespeare and Viola. Even though it was hard to understand at times I like the iambic pentameter and poetic language in Romeo and Juliet. Although I did enjoy the humorous parts of Shakespeare in Love but there was still funny parts in Romeo and Juliet.
