As our understanding of the sciences increase with the advancement of technology, many new methods of improving the human life style are evolving. One of emerging methods of improving the human life style is the development of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). However, the production of GMOs has been a topic of much controversy. As many European countries are starting to ban GMO Food production (Ecowatch.com). So what are GMOs? What are their uses? Are they helpful to us or harmful? For us to understand these organism, we must understand the principles behind the idea of genetically modifying an organism.
So what is a GMO? Genetically Modified Organisms are organisms created by inserting genetic material into the DNA of an organism to enhance an ability that can be productive for other uses. Corn plants are an example of GMOs in which the plant, by enhancing a protein through genetic engineering, can kill insects. Over the years, the number of GMOs has increased-Dolly the Sheep, Glofish, and vaccines are just a couple GMOs that have emerged over the years. But how do GMOs help us?

Scientists are using various methods of genetic engineering to improve the human lifestyle. Major fields of industry are effected by genetic engineering such as the Medical, Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Industries. For example, in the Medical field, GMOs are involved in the production of insulin which can help with diabetes. In the production of vaccines, a virus’s DNA changes with the addition of extra genetic material, to help cure diseases. Also in Agriculture, by modifying a plants genetic information food yield can increase and herbicide and insect resiliency is improved. These are just a few examples of how GMOs are involved in
industry. While the developments in GMOs are exciting, not everyone approves of these developments. Some of this is due to scientific research that says GMOs harms the environment or don’t make a difference in yield in food production. Some consider it morally wrong because of the belief God create everything perfectly. In other words, it is wrong to manipulate what God has created. In religion, approval of GMOs has drawn mixed responses. Such as Pope John II’s views of watching the moral boundaries of GMOs but keeping in mind of the idea of improving people’s lives. Other groups such Greenpeace view that some GMOs don’t make a difference and therefore not necessary. As of September 18, 2015, according to Ecowatch.com- Russia and France have banned the use of GMO Food, this is adding to the rising number of European nations that are banning GMOs because of studies that say GMO foods are potential harmful to humans. In conclusion, there will always be controversy- from nuclear weapons to GMOs. The best way is to be educated on the subject at hand. We as human are not perfect and make mistakes but we are trying to learn more about the world around us. Most people want the world to be a better place. The study of GMOs is necessary in my opinion because of its potential to help other people. As we learn more about GMOs, research practices will improve and new solutions will emerge. No matter your views on GMOs, in order to make informed decisions, we should be educated on the subject at hand and weight out the pros and cons.
