Genetically Modified Organisms, also known as GMOs, are one of the most important issues today. Think about all the food you have eaten this past year that contained GMOs. Think about the ice cream that you last ate; some could argue it has a double dose of GMOs; not only does it contain sugar, which is probably genetically modified, but much of the forage that the dairy cows eat that produced the milk for the ice cream is also genetically modified. A genetically modified organism is a new version of a plant or animal that is created by altering genes using biotechnology. According to recent studies, GMOs are perfectly healthy to consume. GMOs are just as safe as normal bred plants.
But why do you think people are so afraid of GMOs? In some people's minds, they think that GMOs are the most horrible things on earth and the food containing GMOs are just filled with chemicals. Let's take a deeper look on why GMOs have such a negative stigma within our society and highlight the benefits of Genetically Modified Organisms. Some controversies may be that GMOs have some health hazards.
Including allergies, antibiotic resistance, and unknown effects. Social media often has a negative impact on GMOs. For example, a fake news story was leaked saying there was a tomato that contained a fish gene to make it last longer, and apparently the fish gene in the the tomato, a consumer had ate it and had an allergic reaction to the fish gene and ended up dying. . A lot of people go against GMOs and don't even know what the letters of “GMO” stand for. In a video I searched online, by Jimmy Fallon, he was interviewing people on the streets and was asking them, “what are GMOs?” An individual had said that GMOs are “corn bad stuff”, so a lot of people say that GMOs are bad, but they don't really know what they are. Because GMOs are made in a lab, people are afraid of having unnatural foods in their bodies and that gives them a reason to go against
GMOs. A question that is frequently asked about GMOs is, why are GMOs safe, what do they do to help us? In an article I read online about Genetically Modified Organisms, the Golden Rice Project was seeking to put more Vitamin-A into rice to prevent almost 500,000 cases of childhood blindness. There has been proven, that almost 2 million deaths were caused by Vitamin-A deficiency in third-world countries each year. Unfortunately, this project was not able to come to market because the public had a misunderstanding on GMOs. Using GMOs, it allows the plants to tolerate salt stress as well as showing tolerance to other stresses. For example, a gene has been inserted into a tobacco plant allowing it to tolerate salt stress and making the plant last longer. Genetically modified foods also have a better taste to them. In a blind taste test on YouTube, they took a genetically nodified tomato and a normal tomato and had people taste ecah of them. According to the blind taste test, 60 percent of 37 testers preferred the flavor of the GM tomato. Having GMOs being one of the most important issues today, GMOs are safe and healthy to consume. GMOs also are able to help crops around the world and the plants are able to have more longevity. There are positives and negatives with GMOs, but when trying to feed a world with billions of people we need new innovative resources to produce food. GMOs are one of the best resources we have, and they are here to stay.
