For seven years she postponed college, and became a Jehovah’s witness missionary. It was at Brooklyn college where she realized her identity as both a woman and black American. This inspired “The Woman of Brewster Place’, which she published in 1982 after completing a master’s degree in African American studies at Yale.
Karen Hall was born in Chatham, Virginia. She is an American television writer best known for her work on the television series “Judging Amy”, and “M*A*S*H. At the university of Virginia Hall attended writing seminars hosted by Earl Hammer, and Alan Alda.

The woman in the film were vulnerable. Mattie Myers let Butch Fuller seduce her into having sex. Even after he told her” I just don’t stay around long enough to let the good times go sour”. Also Mattie’s close friend Eva, who moves from one man to another hoping to find a man who meets her desires. Mattie’s mother was understanding, when it came down to her getting pregnant by Butch Fuller. The woman in the film were irresponsible. The argument between Lucielle and Eugene resulted in Serena getting electrocuted and killing herself. Cora Lee’s obsession with children results in the neglecting of her own. She can only give them the best care as infants.

4. Color relates to specific objects and emotions. Brewster place was full of color. The clothes the people wore were always bright, and vibrant. The sky is gray, and the buildings are old and worn out. Joyful music was played in the church scenes, and when something good occurred. Sad music was played during sad scenes such as Lucille’s grieving period after she lost Serena. Also after Ben was killed, and all the woman decided to tear the wall covered in his blood down.

5. The men showed atypical behavior. The men in “The Woman of Brewster Place” did not take responsibility for their actions. Basil disappears when faced with the possibility of going back to jail. Eugene disappears when the responsibilities of being a father became too overwhelming. Butch Fuller disappears after using Mattie only for the pleasures of her body.
