Globalization has been the driving force of the modern worlds economy, allowing the transport and trade of goods between countries. Since the start of globalization we have seen the rise and fall of multinational companies, the movement of huge quantities of currency between states, as well as the economic dominance of the global north. Some claim that globalization has made war less common, but that evidence shows that globalization has made war more prevalent due to the growing interconnectedness of countries and the dependence on one and other for resources. One of the most fought over resources in our current world is oil, and it is because of oil that many wars have and will occur. A large reservoir of oil currently rests under the arctic ice shelf, and the discovery of this oil has peaked the interest of 5 countries. Russia, Canada, Norway, Greenland, and The United States of America have all laid claim to all or at least a portion of the Arctic. There have been no wars over this reservoir of oil as of yet, but if our supplies dwindle, the Arctic will become the last place oil dependent countries will look to, and the idea of war over this region is not a stretch of the imagination. “The early literature on modernization and social mobilization of ethnicity offers some relevant insights. According to this view, modernization stimulates competition over power and resources that awaken (or reawaken) conflict based on ethnic nationalism.” (Olzak 2011, 6) This quote taken from Susan Olzaks Journal of Conflict Resolution explains to us that not only can globalization stir up conflict through the struggle for power, but it can also can cause ethnic tensions between groups of people coming into contact with one and other through for the first time through globalization. It inst all doom and gloom when talking about globalization it has raised the standard of living for many people in the world, as well as allowed small businesses to flourish on the international market and become multinational giants, company 's such as Mcdonald 's, Ikea, and Coca Cola owe their success to globalization. But the fact of the matter is that with the growing interconnectedness of the world, war is becoming more and more likely. No longer are wars restricted to the regional borders and coastlines of countries, nations can now wage war and project their power onto the other side of the planet due to globalization and modernization. The dependence of countrys on one and other for crucial resources increases the likelihood of war.
