Globalization is the idea that people, regardless of their geographical status, can be connected to various cultures and products around the world. While critics disagree on the idea of globalization, it is difficult to argue the exponential progress that globalization has taken and the social change that is occurring across the globe due to social media. The idea of globalization becomes more attainable as the Internet continues to evolve. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are growing, forming large global communities acting for social, environmental and even political change. This ability to unify multitudes of people via the Internet is a step towards a utopia, instituting equality and reducing poverty worldwide. However, critics argue this global connection only causes societal chaos and political instability.
Speaker Erik Qualman, author of Socialnomics said, “We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it.” Qualman has coined the term “Socialnomics” for this revolutionary change in how we process information. Social media sites integrate a path for positive globalization because they are interactive and communal (Hutton & Fosdick, 2011) . Social media is making a radical movement to include users all over the world. According to Erik Qualmans’ research, it took radio thirty-eight years to reach fifty million users, television thirteen years, and the Internet four years, whereas Facebook was able to reach two hundred million users in less than one year. The massive expansion of social media is incomparable to the reach of previous means of communication due to its limitless capacity. Social networking has become a global movement and continues to grow by the second.

The idea that geographical status plays no part on how cultures circulate seems farfetched. But with the growth of social media and the Internet, more and more online communities are being formed and making powerful changes. While some oppose the idea that globalization is good, there is no arguing that social media has made the idea of globalization more realistic. This type of unity is progress towards a world culture, ideally instituting equality and reducing poverty. Global connection allows countries to influence each other, the controversy is whether these influences will be beneficial or harmful
The 19th century set the stage for different policies that lead to the extending of America’s power, which is defined as imperialism. Imperialism started for different reasons like the Americans wanting the U.S. to expand or explore the unknown land, or even some feared existing resources in U.S. might eventually dry up. The reason imperialism started doesn’t really matter, but more of what it caused. Imperialism lead to Cuban assistance, the addition of Hawaii and Alaska to America, and Yellow Journalism.

“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though
Social media and networking sites have changed the fundamental nature of the way Americans live and do business and how millions of people access information. It is fast becoming the basis for social life, the new culture of America. It is redefining the values and ideas Americans hold about themselves, from achievement and their daily activities to their external conformity and individualism. It has democratized the media, and taken control of what gets read from the protectors of print and broadcast corporations and gave it back to the people. Social media has spread to just about every area of our lives, from politics and entertainment to business and world culture. Many people no longer read or watch the stories through the traditional media outlets; newspapers, radio or television. Reading or viewing a story of interest is only a mouse click away. Whether this is good or bad, it is now a fact of life.
Globalization is a broad concept and the angle taken to define it can lead us to interpret the idea in many different ways. There is much controversy about what globalization actually means and many definitions fail to encompass social, cultural and technological exchanges between world systems. John Pilger suggests that "it is a jargon term which journalists and politicians have made fashionable which is often used in a positive sense to denote a 'Global village' of free trade, hi-tech marvels and all kinds of possibilities that transcend class, historical experience and ideology." (J.Pilger 1998:63). Taking a broader point of view, Bilton et al defines globalization as "The process whereby political, social, economic and cultural relations increasingly take on a global scale, and which has profound consequences for individuals, local experiences and everyday lives."
By the definition of what Jesse Fleck and Leigh Jonson-Migalski said in their article “The Impact of Social Media on Personal and Professional Lives: An Adlerian Perspective.” (Fleck & Migalski, para 1, 2015). Social media refers to websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Myspace, LinkedIn and many other websites that share the same concept, where individuals can express, exchange and share their thoughts or information with one another. And it is not only limited into one or two countries, the social media is all connected on the internet to the entire world, where people can encounter different nationality, ethnicity and religion of people they never see before. Put it in other words, the users would be like going into a bar, meeting a lot of people they don’t know of, they have the option of talking to them or not to. They can choose to make friends of whoever they are interested, only they are not “really” meeting the people. Furthermore, with the revolutionary invention of personal telephone/smartphone in the late 2000’s, social media benefited from the mobility, convenience and great computing capability from smartphone. Before that people can only use social media on a computer, which you could only use it at a set place. But now everyone can surf into the Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and check on their favorite celebrities or athletes anywhere they want. That is why a lot of people love
Globalization is the connection of different parts of the world. Globalization results in the expansion of international, cultural, economic, and political activities. As people, ideas, knowledge, and goods move easily around the globe, the experiences of people around the world become more similar. (“Definition of Globalization“, n.d., ¶ 1)
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Parascope, Snapchat, and Linkedin are all a part of the huge trend taking over the world. Social media had become big about ten years ago and keeps growing. Social media is not in just one or two countries yet it is worldwide; people in almost all countries are liking statuses and posting updates and pictures. It was indicated that 73% of adults online, 73% of teens online, and 72% of young adults online use some sort of social media (Fleck and Johnson-Migalski 135). With social media came many positive and negative effects. People worldwide are addicted to it, spending hours upon hours on the Internet reading about what other people are doing. The United Nations has declared access to the internet to be
Those who support globalization believe it is a positive concept because it promotes the diffusion of wealth, culture, knowledge, and technology. Proponents argue that the dissemination of information and wealth of this type will only benefit citizens, from the poorest in developing countries, to the wealthiest in established countries. In addition, they claim the integration of cultures and economies leads to the spread of information, which also increases religious, cultural, and racial tolerance. However, in spite of all these well-intentioned ideas, globalization h...
In the recent years globalization has begun to appear as one of the most predominant issues in the world. The term ‘is generally used when discussing the technology and advances in an assortment of areas including, but not limited to, everything from technology to capital. The main aspects that comprise globalization are debatable. Throughout this essay, globalization will be explored as a recent social change in our society as it relates to incorporating economic relations and incorporations political relations around the world, despite the fact that this change is often portrayed as a problematic and unequal one of the restrictions of mobile subjects and connectivity. Globalization can be defined as the international incorporation which results from the exchange of products, culture, ideas, and worldviews. It may also be defined as the increased flow of people, information, and goods across international boundaries. Increase in transportation and the internet has brought about an increase in globalization. Three different forms of globalization dominate the world which are; economic globalization which is the rise in the economic dependence of national economies all over the world due to a rise in to and fro movement of technology, capital, and service from one country to another, political globalization which is different government sectors using the same method, practice, and ideology, and social globalization which involves the unceasing spread of religious beliefs and ideals, whether by the use of soft means such as persuasion or by the use of force. Some of the ideas that are central to the idea that social media is a benefit to today’s society are that social media encourages increased communication with friends and family, provides fast access to breaking news and other information, and help business attract new business and correspond more quickly with their existing customers. Increased communication is important in all aspects of life. Keeping in touch with family and friends is easier than ever before. Social media is a controversy topic in today’s society. Some people think that social media destroys human interaction and real life human relationships. While others think that social media is a bless to humanity. Social media is becoming the most important and influential technological advancement in our country since the internet was created in the 1960s. For the longest time people were only limited to e-mails to make communication to one another and there were no large scale social media sites available. However, the internet started taking off in the early 2000s as new generations started bringing to the table new and more advanced ideas. Facebook was invented in 2004, where people were able to connect with whoever they wanted throughout the world to communicate and be able to share anything. On their
A question raised here that why we called the world as a Global Village or what does Globalization mean in real? If we look few years back, I was very difficult for people to get them connected or make contact with their dear ones who lived in far areas, people just knew about the famous food of any country but didn’t have availability to have it. People didn’t get full information of any news at the time, what’s going on other countries; they didn’t have any access to make them updated with all this stuff. But now a day, the scenario gets change with the help of new scientific inventions in media sector. Communication is one of the basic elements which play an important role in flourishing the process of globalization in all over the world. Technology is the basic extension of increasing communication at same time in different places. Technology eliminates the concepts of space and distance; it becomes easy for anyone to get connected with anyone at any corner of world through using internet, social websites and technological tools. New inventions in communication and media
