The concepts of globalization have impacted small, medium and large law enforcement organizations in the United States. Globalization has influenced the way criminal justice leaders think, make decisions, and lead their organization. Furthermore, globalization has impacted diversity within the United States (Hanser & Gomila, 2015). Globalization not only brought advantages to a workplace, but it also facilitated crime and immigration activities (legal and illegal). The term diversity has varied meanings, and “there are a multiplicity of perspectives from which one can approach the notion of diversity because they are all valid yet unique in many respects” (Hanser & Gomila, 2015, p. 2). Hanser and Gomila believed the term diversity is subject to diverse forms of meanings; therefore they prefer to use the term culture diversity. Hanser and Gomila (2015) referred culture diversity to a “concept whereby the history, beliefs, behaviors, language, traditions, and values of racial and/or ethnic groups are what make them distinct” (p.

Research from Hanser and Gomila (2015) revealed that most minority groups “live in lower-class neighborhoods in large urban centers where the greatest concentration of law enforcement officers exists” (p. 340). According to Dr. Carl S. Taylor, the relationship between minority groups and police in the United States has historically been strained. Some cities have a deep and bitter history of bias and prejudice interwoven in their past relationships. The feeling in many communities today is that the system pits law enforcement as an occupying army versus the neighborhood. In today’s society, the United States is a melting pot of diversity. It is filled with many different cultures, languages, and beliefs. As these diverse aspects of people’s lives fill the city, suburbs and the country, police officers must adapt to these changes in their community. If police departments do not adapt or are slow at adapting to their community’s diversity they can come upon many barriers that can make their duties more challenging. The two most prominent barriers that exist between the police and their community are language barriers and cultural barriers (Miller, Hess, Orthmann, 2014).
Generational diversity is an emerging issue for law enforcement. Today¡¦s workforce is different from any other in history now that four generations are working side-by-side. Law enforcement managers will have to learn to recognize the changing dynamics of personnel and develop strategic new approaches to old problems.
If you had to choose a nation to take on the power of protecting the world basically as a global police force who would you choose to take on this big responsibility? Well most of the countries are choosing the U.S. well the troops feel different on this topic they feel like it is not our duty to try and solve everyone else’s problem. They also need to help with issues that this is needed and we are the best trained and best equipped to react to any scenario. Because the united states is making two new brigades that are trained to resolve issues without violence and to depend more on social skills but still trained well enough to fight in a pinch, and we have thousands of troops deployed already as peacekeepers which are basically global police. So we already have a start on the job but what about the cost who is gonna even the costs so we arent losing money. But is the cost of all this worth it the cost of human lives worth everyone elses protection how do the men in uniform feel about being a global cop when there country is not in harm some of them feel like this “troops have a hard time dealing with the fact that their missions represent no clear threat to our national interests making it more difficult for them to be separated from their families for long periods of time”. (O’Meara) As stated before some soldiers feel this is not there job they did not join the military to be a cop they joined to be a soldier and protect their freedom no one elses. They think that a global police force would be a good thing but they want it to be a job you sign up for cause they just want their freedom to be protected cause they think it is not what they signed on for. The reason in the past 20-25 years this has become a big deal because of the past terrorist attacks, so they want to keep the terrorist groups under control.
Multicultural understanding is very important to law enforcement because members of minority and ethnic groups account for more than one-third of American. Scientists predict that members of minorities will make up a large part of the U.S population by year 2050. One of the most critical issues for the police in the last three decades is the tension and often hostile upright between the police and ethnic minority groups. In the past few decades, minorities’ representation has increased significantly in many U.S police departments. However, Hispanic-Americans, and other minorities are still underrepresented in U.S police departments.
The building of mutual trust between police agencies and the communities they serve are critical to maintaining public safety and effective policing. In past as well as recent history controversial uses of force among other types of incidents have damaged the relationships between police and their communities. The United States is a vast land of various races, ethnicities and religious backgrounds in which law enforcement must navigate daily. Many communication barriers still interfere in the building of relationships between various cultural groups and the law enforcement that serves them. While each group brings its own stack of beliefs and backgrounds, it is still important for law enforcement to become familiar with those they may encounter
As globalization continues to flourish and evolve, this creates further opportunities in which individuals are able to launder money with greater ease, efficiency in profit and sophistication. Through the forms of economic globalization, people may use new forms of travel to their advantage and personal gain. It is widely recognized (Pfaller, A & Lerch, M 2005, Auernheimer, L 2003) that this is becoming a significant challenge in the international sphere. Through globalization, criminals are able to create new means to commit crime for an economic benefit and avoid prosecution through new forms of travel. This allows them to spread transactions across multiple nations around the globe, thus increasing the number of obstacles that need to be overcome for an investigation to be completed (Karofi, U, Mwanza, J). For example, this can be explained through the new forms of money laundering. Money laundering is ‘the process by which one conceals the existence, illegal source, or illegal application of income, and disguises that income to make it appear legitimate’ (President’s Commission on Organised Crime 1984, p. 7). This can be achieved through the process of transporting diamonds or gold or even through wire transfers (Morris-Cotterill, N). The lack of risk that is involved in these contemporary crimes is increasing the appeal for crimes such money laundering to occur. This is due to the fact that criminals know that it will prove to be difficult to investigate and prosecute their activities when it occurs on a transnational basis. This, in turn, gives more individuals the opportunity to commit these crimes with little risk that they will be caught. In the year 2015, 1,086 people have died in police related shootings in the U.S according to Vice News (2015). More and more minority deaths are occurring each year at the hands of law enforcement. Although the police swore to protect and serve, their disproportionate shootings of minorities indicate otherwise; which is why police officers need more cultural training, non-lethal force for apprehension training, and should be subject to harsher punishments for the officers with a history of excessive force.
The challenge for law enforcement and cultural awareness, is more unique than in any other profession because of the power held by police. This creates a special need for understanding a multicultural world. The success of the many sides of community policing is dependent on this awareness.
