The Global Society

Introduction

The society that we live in today has been around since we were born. Over the years it has gone through changes, but it has always been in our lives. For this reason it is hard to understand how a society can develop. Because society is the largest of the human systems a lot has to happen in order for it to become dysfunctional and also for it to be healed. After a short discussion our class came up with many different questions regarding society. For example how can an individual or small group of individuals have an impact on society that consists of so many people? What is our role in a global society? How can societies in other countries affect our society here in the U.S.? In this paper I will attempt to answer these questions as well as cover the structure of society in greater detail.

History

One of the first major societies we known was the roman empire. It first began when Latin settlers moved into the area and started building huts and raising pigs, sheep goats and cattle. "In the fifth century B.C., the Persian Empire was located on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea, in what is now known as Iran. To the west of Persia was Greece, with whom the Persians were fighting. Rome, to the west of Greece, was essentially behind the Greek armies; initially, therefore, it was able to extend its sphere of influence without external interference. By 44 B.C., Rome controlled the entire Mediterranean region. Roman engineers built aqueducts and fortifications, Roman soldiers and scribes spread their language (derivatives of which exist throughout Europe and the Mediterranean region and are known as "Romance" languages), and Roman law became the basis for the legal system in many European countries."(Lustig,1998,p.1) Because of there location and advanced engineering the Roman society was able to excel and become one the biggest empires of there time.

Development

Today our society is developing into a more global society. With more advanced transportation and communication we are able to travel all over the world or communicate with people across the world from our home. Global society can be viewed as "the intensification of world wide social relations which link distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles away and vice versa.
