The Global Society
Introduction
The society that we live in today has been around since we were born. Over the years it has gone through changes, but it has always been in our lives. For this reason it is hard to understand how a society can develop. Because society is the largest of the human systems a lot has to happen in order for it to become dysfunctional and also for it to be healed. After a short discussion our class came up with many different questions regarding society. For example how can an individual or small group of individuals have an impact on society that consists of so many people? What is our role in a global society? How can societies in other countries affect our society here in the U.S.? In this paper I will attempt to answer these questions as well as cover the structure of society in greater detail.
History
One of the first major societies we known was the roman empire. It first began when Latin settlers moved into the area and started building huts and raising pigs, sheep goats and cattle. "In the fifth century B.C., the Persian Empire was located on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea, in what is now known as Iran. To the west of Persia was Greece, with whom the Persians were fighting. Rome, to the west of Greece, was essentially behind the Greek armies; initially, therefore, it was able to extend its sphere of influence without external interference. By 44 B.C., Rome controlled the entire Mediterranean region. Roman engineers built aqueducts and fortifications, Roman soldiers and scribes spread their language (derivatives of which exist throughout Europe and the Mediterranean region and are known as "Romance" languages), and Roman law became the basis for the legal system in many European countries."(Lustig,1998,p.1) Because of there location and advanced engineering the Roman society was able to excel and become one the biggest empires of there time.
Development
Today our society is developing into a more global society. With more advanced transportation and communication we are able to travel all over the world or communicate with people across the world from our home. Global society can be viewed as "the intensification of world wide social relations which link distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles away and vice versa.
The first theoretical perspective is structural functionalism. Structural functionalism is a macro-level theory that “views a society as a complete unit” ( Larkin, Ch.2 ). Society is seen as a system of interaction, where everyone has their own role (Harpercollins). Therefore, society is seen as a system with different parts and how these parts operate together. Structural functionalism also focuses on social stability which is seen as a societal

Rome the most powerful civilization at one point in time in world history. The Roman Empire had much ownership around the Mediterranean Sea in Asia, Africa, and Europe. As such the Latin’s settled in the wider area of Rome around 1000 BC. Early settlements were not to be mistaken for anything like a city, rather more “country” plain region. They kept pigs, herded sheep, goats, cattle and lived in primitive, round huts. “So how could such archaic beginnings ever lead to a city of power which would rule the world? The rise of Rome was certainly not inevitable, but it had many advantages right from the start” (“The Roman Empire”). Rome lies only a few miles from the sea with many trade opportunities. What came with great land and trade routes came great powerful emperors. “Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus was awarded the honorific title of Augustus by a decree of the Senate. So began the Roman empire and the principal of the Julio-Claudians” (Lightfoot). Even though he did not rule for long, he gave Rome a since of hope and a whole dynasty of emperors. Between 58 and 50 BC, Caesar used his expertise in military strategy, as with the Roman army’s training and discipline to conquer
How has society impacted members of society? Society has been a major part of our civilisation from as long as we can remember. It has s been placed to keep us humans in check to insure we remain civil and live in harmony with other members, yet the norms of society have been constantly changed over the centuries in order to keep up with the changing generations over the years, with a new set of regulations to follow. It's one of our basic instincts to be wanted and to fit in with the mob and because of this we all tend to follow these rules, this is known as mob mentality where the term describes how people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviours/ follow trends, for most of the times the changes made to society have benefited
“The Roman Empire is heir to nearly three thousand years of development in the Mediterranean basin”(Smiley, 1). The Romans were guided by the Etruscan, a cultural group in central Italy that taught them the alphabet and even their architecture. After being helped by the Etruscan, the Romans rebelled back and defeated Etruria. They completely obliterated all traces of Etruscan society. After being attack by the Gaul in 387 BCE, the Romans rebuilt their city with even stronger defenses. They reorganized their army and introduced new tactics and iron weapons. By the end of the century, the Romans had a strong army and navy. The Carthaginians, a powerful maritime empire in North Africa, also helped the Romans conquered all of Southern Italy and the Greek colonies. However, the Romans turned against Carthage because it was a major sea power. Rome was expanding and wanted to get bigger, so they fought Carthage for control of Sicily over 120 years until in 146 BCE, Rome won. The Romans destroyed the city of Carthage by killing most of the inhabitants, burning the Carthage navy and salting the earth so no crops well ever grow. The few who survive were slaughtered or sold to slavery. “By the mid second century BCE, Rome was the most powerful empire in the Mediterranean. It had a well-trained army and an excellent navy”(Smiley, 1). The conquest of Carthage and Greek territory help Rome become a great
Ancient Rome started as a small city-state, however through force it was established as the dominating power of the Mediterranean. Rome was founded by Romulus on April 21, 753 B.C., and reached its peak in land it controlled in around 120 A.D., and slowly fell after that. During Rome’s peak, the Roman Empire controlled all of Gaul, parts of Germania and Brittan, and most of the Mediterranean. Because the Romans controlled so much land, its important rulers, events, and religion impacted much of the world.
Society is a result of our interactions, and society guides our interactions. This all stems from social construction. Social construction conveys values, ideas and traditions. These values, ideals and traditions are created and become traditions that are then passed on. These traditions then come to be perceived as natural rather than cultural, which is often how media will display it and society unknowingly accepts.
Before taking this class, my understanding between each individual and the whole society is that every individuals as the gear are connected together to become a society like a machine. That is, human beings build the society. However, the class gave me bigger view of the relationship between the people and the society. Discussing about the relationship between me and the broader social world is based on how all human beings and the broader social world effect together. Thus, I am going to show my understanding from the class and reading about the interaction between each individual and the whole society.
Globalization is a broad concept and the angle taken to define it can lead us to interpret the idea in many different ways. There is much controversy about what globalization actually means and many definitions fail to encompass social, cultural and technological exchanges between world systems. John Pilger suggests that "it is a jargon term which journalists and politicians have made fashionable which is often used in a positive sense to denote a 'Global village' of free trade, hi-tech marvels and all kinds of possibilities that transcend class, historical experience and ideology." (J.Pilger 1998:63). Taking a broader point of view, Bilton et al defines globalization as "The process whereby political, social, economic and cultural relations increasingly take on a global scale, and which has profound consequences for individuals, local experiences and everyday lives."
Global technology can affect all areas of life including economic, medical, cultural, and political. The need to cite definition Technology in globalization is how new things spread and help to better develop our world and the way we live. Many discussions have taken place in recent years about the use of technology and globalization and its impact on the world has been both criticized and praised. Globalization and technology are good for the world because they have had a positive impact on communication, education, science, medicine, economics, politics and social circles across the globe. Technology allows people from all lifestyles and from all around the world to be able to communicate with one another within seconds, instead of having to wait up to a couple of months for a letter to travel around the world to the other person and back.

Globalization is the connection of different parts of the world. Globalization results in the expansion of international, cultural, economic, and political activities. As people, ideas, knowledge, and goods move easily around the globe, the experiences of people around the world become more similar. (“Definition of Globalization“, n.d., ¶ 1)
Globalization can be defined as the international incorporation which results from the exchange of products, culture, ideas, and worldviews. It may also be defined as the increased flow of people, information, and goods across international boundaries. Increase in transportation and the internet has brought about an increase in globalization. Three different forms of globalization dominate the world which are; economic globalization which is the rise in the economic dependence of national economies all over the world due to a rise in to and fro movement of technology, capital, and service from one country to another, political globalization which is different government sectors using the same method, practice, and ideology, and social globalization which involves the unceasing spread of religious beliefs and ideals, whether by the use of soft means such as persuasion or by the use of force. Some individuals and social groups resist globalization because they belief that globalization would destroy their culture and their natural environment, bring ...
A question raised here that why we called the world as a Global Village or what does Globalization mean in real? If we look few years back, I was very difficult for people to get them connected or make contact with their dear ones who lived in far areas, people just knew about the famous food of any country but didn’t have availability to have it. People didn’t get full information of any news at the time, what’s going on other countries; they didn’t have any access to make them updated with all this stuff. But now a day, the scenario gets change with the help of new scientific inventions in media sector. Communication is one of the basic elements which play an important role in flourishing the process of globalization in all over the world. Technology is the basic extension of increasing communication at same time in different places. Technology eliminates the concepts of space and distance; it becomes easy for anyone to get connected with anyone at any corner of world through using internet, social websites and technological tools. New inventions in communication and media
