In chapter four of Global Church Planting, the authors talk about the expansion of Kingdom communities as learned from the New Testament. They talk about the importance of church reproduction and how to do it in a healthy way. Indigeneity and church planting movements are critical parts to church multiplication. This chapter describes the importance of local churches training local leaders to again reproduce and train those churches as well to reproduce. “The missionary effort to establish indigenous churches is an effort to plant churches that fit naturally into their environment and to avoid planting churches that replicate western patterns.” – John Mark Terry

Throughout this chapter, and the entire book, it is restated how important it is to keep the church local and not be hindered by making it fall in only western patterns. This is important for missionaries reaching foreign fields and planting churches. These new churches are supposed to be “God’s bridges” in reaching out to their own people. Pushing a church to adopt foreign traditions and ideas can hinder the multiplication process. It is important for them to rely on local source and not outside resources. The church should also be built on the skills and abilities of the local believers. Using their own culture and people will help produce a church self-reliant and empower the believers and people of the church.
When starting a church it is important to remember to teach in a way the people of that specific culture will understand and be able to reproduce. “A rule of thumb is, if you can’t teach local leaders to do it, and they couldn’t teach others to do it, you probably shouldn’t do it.” (Global Church Planting: Craig Ott & Gene Wilson) The new local believers are supposed to become the next evangelists. Out of the desolation of World War II sprang the Australian Committee for the World Council of Churches. This developed into the Australian Council of Churches which, in 1994, grew to be the National Council of Churches in Australia. The NCCA is 15 Christian churches, gathered from across Australia, who have embarked on a pilgrimage together . Each brings a widely diverse record of place, experience, and theology, but all share a mutual faith and confession in the Jesus Christ as God and Savior. All share a common future as they are confident that the future of Christians in Australia lies together, not in division. The aim of the NCCA is to deepen the relationship of member churches so as to communicate more visibly the unity willed by Christ and to rally towards the achievement of their mission of common witness, proclamation and service .
The missionary expansion and their work within different nations is a dilemma of well intentions versus prosperity and power. Many missionaries remained out of politics and out of local culture and only served the communities for the better. They increased educational opportunities and provided medical care; most importantly they served to ensure the communities could actively participate in the international community. While the government and businesses reaped the rewards of increased prosperity and power, these rewards were in many ways not the purpose of missionary expansion but merely an outcome.
The size of the Christian megachurch is manifested in its title, which demonstrates that this typically prodigious and resplendent edifice sustains a weekly attendance of at least two thousand congregants; and that the majority of the mega churches are of the Protestant persuasion, of which its doctrine is basically the antithesis of Catholicism’s authoritarian structures, as well as the other major religions of Islam, Hinduism and Old Testament Judaism (The Hartford Seminary). Over the years, there has not only been an enormous emergence of mega churches here in the US, but also of many disparaging remarks from the public, comedians, books and the news media, about this institution. Some assert that these types of churches are not really concerned about the souls of the people, and they are prodigious only because of the avarice, a misrepresentation of Jesus Christ and a manipulation of the hearts of people, in conjunction with a gross negligence of spiritual leadership. The truth is, that in some instances there is malfeasance, but in others, the church is led by the Spirit of God with vigor and integrity.

These approaches by European Americans were thought to be more socially acceptable means to acquiring more land and expansion of their new world. The missionaries were successful at baptizing hundreds of Native Americans. They used the bible, sermons and Christian beliefs in God to influence tribal members to give up their cultural beliefs. The bible was translated into their native language in order to provide instruction and commitment to the word of God. In this culture, the way to a better life and forgiveness for savage acts, would be offered to all who believe in one God and become Christians. Heaven was introduced to the American Indians as well as a new belief in Hell, as an alternative demise. In all, many Christians came about from the missionaries’ efforts. Catherine Tegahkouita was one of the most celebrated Mohawk convert. There would be no other as devoted to God as she was during this crusade. “Nothing could be more beautiful, but with that beauty which inspires the love of virtue. The people were never weary gazing on her, and each left with his heart full of the desire to become a saint”.5 As more and more time went on, villages grew in Christian numbers. Instead of adopting the ways of popular culture, the Church should show the world a more excellent way. Instead of retooling Sunday to render it in synch with Monday through Saturday, the Church, in its proclamation and in its making of disciples, should offer a counter-cultural model of living obedience, seeking to transform what believers and unbelievers experience during the week by what happens to them and around them on Sunday.
Without this theology, not only the believer, but the missionary has no foundation to build upon. Believers in general, but especially missionaries must prepare themselves through prayer in order to lead churches to preach and teach the Word of God. Paul tells us in 1 Timothy that those that labor in preaching and teaching” should be considered worthy of double honor. (1 Tim. 5:17) This is important because Christian’s understanding their role as a believer, or again even more importantly, the role of a missionary is extremely vital in advancing God’s kingdom. Winter and Hawthorne rightly say in our text that “If we in the West insist on keeping our blessing instead of sharing it, then we will, like other nations before us (Israel, Rome, etc) perhaps have to “lose” our blessing in order for the remaining nations to receive.” Although there are times in today’s world that may seem like the world has turned their backs on God, Christian’s should look with great anticipation for the days that are coming when God will reclaim the earth and believers will be redeemed. For effectiveness, planters with the right mix of spiritual gifts including outreach and evangelism, missional leadership, pastoral care skills, good administrative gifts, and physical strength are helpful in leading the missional work. The church functions to participate in God’s ongoing mission with the mandate to proclaim the gospel. Proclaiming the gospel requires crossing of cultural barriers and planting of churches into the social context of the missional community among others, planters have lessons to learn from these past experiences. Church planting is an important subject, though it’s often not given the required attention. For example, summarising the report of the working group of the Church of England’s Mission and Public Affairs Council, in the late 1970s, church planting in England was largely unknown although the Church of England was familiar with the idea of daughter churches, and in the decade following each world war the century-wide overall decline in opening new church buildings was reversed.
