The book of “Lost in Translation” and the Hester Street film, which reflect immigrants’ life in the new world, have some similarities and differences. In the book of “Lost in Translation”, Eva, a polish immigrant who came to America with her family at the age of thirteen, described her journey to the new world and the struggle she faced. Gitl, in the Hester Street film, an immigrant who came with her son to America to reunite with her husband, also faced struggle in the new culture. Although Eva’s and Gitl have different ways of changing their culture to the new world, nevertheless, they both have similar perspective on fitting in to the new world culture. She had trouble to be part of the culture with the lack of not understanding the new language. When she arrived to the new world, Eva described herself as “I’m become a very serious young person, missing the register of wit and irony in my speech, though my mind sees ironies everywhere…. I am a pretend teenager among the real stuff” (Hoffman p 118). Eva lost herself through her inability to express herself. She felt the struggle on how the new language affects her identity. She looked American teenagers as serious ones, so she wanted to hide her humor in her speech to pretend as the new world teenager. A polish teenager who didn’t have to hide any of her speech in back home is now pressured to act as the other teens in the new world. This leads to changing her personality which is part of her identity. Eva ended the novel with the last sentence saying “The language of this is sufficient. I am here now” (Hoffman 280). Eva told us that her journey has come to an end. Her journey has been about identity but the she used language as a tool to reach what she looks for. In contrast, in Hester Street. The “F Word” is an essay about an Iranian girl’s struggle with finding who she is, in a foreign land known as the U.S. It acknowledges her inner struggle with an outward showing character of herself that she holds, her name. During the essay the reader learns about how the girl fights her inner feeling of wanting to fit in and her deep rooted Iranian culture that she was brought up to support. Firoozeh Dumas, the girl in the book, and also the author of the essay, uses various rhetorical tactics to aid her audience in grasping the fact that being an immigrant in the U.S. can be a difficult life. To demonstrate her true feelings to the audience as an immigrant in the U.S., she uses similes, parallelism, and even her tone of humor.

Richard Rodriguez' narrative, “Aria: Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood” and Carmen Tafolla's poem, “In Memory of Richi” have similar themes. In Rodriguez' narrative, he talks about his experience attending an American school. Similarly, Tafolla recites a story about a boy in an American school setting. Each story implies that students of another culture are subject to lose their cultural ties in order to fit in with the American society.
This poem captures the immigrant experience between the two worlds, leaving the homeland and towards the new world. The poet has deliberately structured the poem in five sections each with a number of stanzas to divide the different stages of the physical voyage. Section one describes the refugees, two briefly deals with their reason for the exodus, three emphasises their former oppression, fourth section is about the healing effect of the voyage and the concluding section deals with the awakening of hope. This restructuring allows the poet to focus on the emotional and physical impact of the journey.
