An analysis of the article, "Girl Moved to Tears By 'Of Mice and Men' Cliff Notes" uses a satirical outlook on the laziness of people in today’s society. Through this article, the face value appears to be stating how compelling Cliff Notes can be, but through blatant satirical statements, irony, and humor, it shows how indolent humans are as a society. The use of irony in the article induces a shock-value from the audience in order to bring to attention the lethargic nature of people.
The Onion's "Girl Moved to Tears by Of Mice and Men Cliffs Notes" is an article with satirical and critical tone about a young communication major, Grace Weaver, who is emotional moved by reading the synopsis of the American classic Of Mice and Men over the original novel. In this article, the author describes Weaver's process and reaction to the assigned reading that aims to entertain an audience who has read the book. By using subtle satire and descriptions that let the reader understand the dangers of Weaver's shortcomings, the author is able to emphasize the importance of doing your own good work in a humorous and interesting manner.
Style refers to the distinctive form in which a writer arranges his or her words in order to achieve a particular effect such as narrative, descriptive, expository and persuasive, tone is the author’s attitude towards the people, situations and events in their story while irony is a figure of speech which is a contradiction or incongruity between what is expected and what actually occurs. Three types of sarcasm are verbal, dramatic, and situational. In this paper, I intend to look at the style, tone an irony used by Junot Diaz’ in "How to Date a Brown girl, (Black girl, White girl, or Halfie)" and its differences and or similarities to the styles, tone and irony learnt in this course.
Satirical writing allows the author to express his or her opinion about a problem in society. A writing must follow three rules in order for it to be classified as satirical. First, a continuous focus on one’s subject’s faults. Secondly, instead of telling the reader directly, information must be given indirectly. Thirdly, the writing must have a variety of satirical techniques in general (Festa). With these simple guidelines, an author can demonstrate his beliefs of what he thinks needs to be changed in society.
The harsh reality is one which hit everyone in America in the 1930. People found work hard to find and crime was on the uprise. This meant, unfortunately, that innocent people were the easy prey and, as we see in the Of Mice and Men, there were plenty of characters that were easy prey. Of Mice and Men characters have and do thing that make them vulnerable in way which do cause trouble. In this essay, that harsh reality and easy prey will be shown through to see which characters are the most vulnerable.
Suffering from the death of a close friend, the boy tries to ignore his feelings and jokes on his sister. His friend was a mental patient who threw himself off a building. Being really young and unable to cope with this tragedy, the boy jokes to his sister about the bridge collapsing. "The mention of the suicide and of the bridge collapsing set a depressing tone for the rest of the story" (Baker 170). Arguments about Raisinettes force the father to settle it by saying, "you will both spoil your lunch." As their day continues, their arguments become more serious and present concern for the father who is trying to understand his children better. In complete agreement with Justin Oeltzes’ paper, "A Sad Story," I also feel that this dark foreshadowing of time to come is an indication of the author’s direct intention to write a sad story.
Dramatic irony is “a relationship of contrast between a character's limited understanding of his or her situation in some particular moment of the unfolding action and what the audience, at the same instant, understands the character's situation actually to be” (). In order for dramatic irony to occur, some amount of consciousness must be concurrently aware from both perspectives. Night encompasses the feelings the Jewish community had with the author's use of dramatic irony. Despite the inhumane conditions that persisted throughout the Holocaust, the Jewish society often applicated a sense of hopefulness

Blood and Guts in High School is a combination of graphic sexual imagery, disjointed narrative, cut-ups and savage condemnations regarding the political and social order. Acker repeats various pages of texts throughout the novel; she also fuses many literary forms in the same page, all the while breaking up the text using illustrations. The novel uses a blend of autobiographical, historical, as well as literary allusion in portraying various themes like identity, gender, myth, sexuality and corruption. On the other hand, The Beauty of the Husband narrative shows the narrator’s obsession and craving for her husband, whose salient feature is beauty itself. The narrative explores beauty, love, desire, and betrayal because the story is about marriage, and the seductive power of beauty that persists even when the relationship between two individuals goes sour. Excessive inwardness is a feature in poetry and is heavily used in the narrative because the author conceals truth beneath irony, which is also an essential feature in poetry. The aim of the essay is to scrutinize narrative techniques employed in the two narratives and addressing the various issues in the novels. The paper explores the techniques employed in The Beauty of the Husband in telling the story of the protagonist’s husband’s lies and adulteries, which help propel the fictional narrative. Moreover, the paper evaluates the various techniques used in the narrative Blood and Guts in High School in illustrating the various themes in the novel.
In conclusion Margaret Atwood uses humor to explore a serious topic, allowing the reader to see how society itself has failed to address the seriousness of the issue. Estelle may never understand how someone could violate another human being in that way. She is nonetheless fully aware that in reality, unlike her rape fantasies, no amount of conversation would deter a potential rapist from committing the violent act against a woman as rape has nothing to do with knowing a person and developing a human bond, instead it has everything to do with power.
Modern times, set in the time of “The Great Depression” of 1930s, written and directed by Charlie Chaplin, is deemed as one of the most “culturally significant” movies of all time. Charlie Chaplin once again reprised the role of his iconic character “The Little tramp”. The film is famed for its portrayal of a socially relevant theme in a humorous and satirical way. The world we live in had undergone a tremendous change in the late eighteenth century. There was a complete turnaround of events in the lives of the public. Many sociologists attribute the process of “great transformation” for this mayhem caused in the society. There was a massive change in social, economic, technological and intellectual life of people which triggered this concept
Jaques addresses the topic of satire utilizing a unique way to convey the message to the audience or reader. A mention is made of the infant who “[mews] and [pukes] in the nurses arms “(II, ii, 144-146). He describes the event in such a g...
Though each of the above works varies in the degree of satire employed, the pattern among them accentuates how satire can best be understood not only as a lens of criticism, but also in captivating the audience into considering their own role in the criticism. Often times, as has been shown, the authors’ utilize the end-states of protagonists to emphasize critique made throughout the literary work. Yet, the degree of ambiguity serves to engage the audience, which leads to a greater effectiveness of the satire. Therefore, returning to Swift’s quote on satire, the most effective satires not only allow for beholders to discover everybody else’s face, but through degrees of ambiguity, they also are able to discover their own.
A conviction, argued most aggressively by Jean Baudrillard, is beginning to take hold, in and out of the academy, that this sphere, after an almost totalizing expansion, is now in decline. The panic over the loss of the social, whether supportable or not, offers a possible explanation for the contemporary nostalgia for the period in which Swift wrote Gulliver's Travels. In this age of dissolution, what do we see when we look back at the age of our creation? One thing we observe is the development of a peculiar kind of irony which we can't help but distinguish from our experience of this trope in the age of its dominance. The satirical effect of the irony in Gulliver's Travels read by the Postmodern will be precisely what it was not at the time of its production.
Satirical fiction, although unique and one of a kind in its nature, has continued to be an enthralling and captivating subject out of the plethora of themes that exist throughout literature history and thrive to this day. While the many forms of humor that appear throughout a novel, from comical, ironic characters to witty, exaggerated plots, are often considered tame and childish themes, authors, skillful and clever alike, are able to utilize such forms of humor and transform them into a means of stirring emotion within their audiences, in order to deliver logical, yet powerful messages. For centuries, authors have used satires as devices to not only ridicule, but to expose and criticize people’s stupidity and vices, often so in the context of character and demeanor. 19th century Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was undoubtedly no different. Considered Gogol’s greatest work, Dead Souls is both an exemplar of intellectual Russian critique and side-splitting comedy gold, making it a satire worth crowning its author as one of the greatest writers of his time. Through the protagonist, Pavel Invanovitch Tchitchikov, and his encounters with the many different Russian nobles, women, and serfs that appear throughout the novel, Gogol depicts the flaws and faults of post-Napoleonic Feudalism and Russian mentality, all while providing a humorous and eye-opening form of entertainment. Nikolai Gogol, in his masterpiece, Dead Souls, deftly and flawlessly satirizes the evils that plague his time, such that an unfinished manuscript could become one of the greatest satires of all time.
...ay’s use of humourous dialogue between the two waiters brings more attention to the grimness of the situation, since the reader easily comprehends that the older waiter in the bar is going through a form of midlife crisis, and can actually relate to the suicidal old drunk in the cafe. This is a form of cynical comedy that puts immediate focus on the tragic plot of the story, which is relative to Goivan Battista’s and Giraldi Cinthio’s article, "Discourse Or Letter On The Composition Of Comedies And Tragedies” since it recognizes that comedy and tragedy cannot typically coexist if a true moral is supposed to be conveyed. In general, Thomas King’s handling of comedy is to engage, entertain, and then viably educate, while Ernest Hemingway’s humour is noticeably unsympathetic and proves that depressing situations cannot be directly described in a truly humourous method.
