Giotto Di Bondone is a famous painter and architect that is considered one of the first renaissance artist in history. He is credited to be the painter that started the renaissance because of his famous artworks across Florence, Italy. He also was credited for making paintings seen as a window into space which it was very unique thing to do in this time period. His many details in his paintings made him unique to other painters back then. Many of his paintings included many distinguishable human emotions and more physical characteristics than most. His works flourished in the Renaissance period because of his use of chiaroscuro and his way of manipulation of perspectives of the things shown in his works. His works compare to his contemporaries are very different too. His works depicted the human face in a more detailed way, he created figures in three-dimensional space, and human emotions ( gestures and expressions). His paintings were so detailed that you can guess what the person is doing which it is an amazing and difficult to do. His unique way of painting and the way he handled the space and the human body in his paintings can be seen in his work called Ognissanti Madonna. During the Byzantine art period, figures were elongated and no details went to their faces or bodies but Giotto changed this by giving us paintings that came out at us and show realism. The development of Italian painting in the years around the 1300 or the proto-renaissance is in some sense the rebirth of art and culture. The painters of Renaissance Italy usually attached to particular courts and with loyalties to certain cities, still explored the extensive span of Italy. Many of the Italian painters grew artistically during this time, which is noticeable in Duccio’s painting compared to Giotto’s. In the renaissance period it was highly popularized to mainly draw depictions of religious figures, which is what the concentration of Duccio’s artwork mainly was. Before the painting of the Betrayal of Christ, Duccio’s paintings were highly composed and reliant upon the ancient tradition of icon painting. In the time around 1300 Duccio took steps toward depicting images in a more naturalistic form; Whereas, Giotto, in the 1300’s, was already established as painting more three-dimensional and naturalistic forms.
Giovanni Pietro Rizzoli also known as Giampietrino spent the vast majority of his known career developing drawings and paintings of nude women from roman mythology under the leadership of the great Leonardo Da Vinci. Under the influential scope of Leonardo, Giampietrino replicated myriad artworks of leonardo’s displaying the importance of honoring the great artists of the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, especially those such as Leonardo who remain a significant figure in the discourse of the canon of art in contemporary art society. Although he developed his own techniques and manipulations to refine his own work and bring forth a change in the development of the renaissance and baroque style of art, Giampietrino closely followed the methods taught in the Lombard school of art and those of his mentor Leonardo Da Vinci. Far into the cultural and intellectual rebirth of Florence, Giralamo Savonarola used religion to reclaim the minds of the citizens and bring the city back into the Middle Ages. Michelangelo Buonarroti was one of the top three Italian artists. His work are examples of how great the art was in the High Renaissance Era. Michelangelo’s chalk drawing, Study of a Man, was his analysis of the way he saw the body and the way it was shaped and saw the different positions. By using critical thinking as he created his art, he had the ability to study the way a man looks. He was able to process how the way the body moves and sits.
Renaissance artists considered the imitation of nature their primary goal. Their search for naturalism became an end it in itself: to persuade onlookers of the reality of the object or event they were portraying. Italian artists began to focus in the area of perspective. An example is the birth of Venus. This connects back to Greco-Roman culture since Venus was one of the God’s of their religion. She is completely nude in the painting which differs very much from the Middle Ages art. Middles Ages art was regulated by religion, so this would have not been allowed. Another example is the death of Jesus, painted by Andrea Mantegna. It truly focuses on the perspective because it makes the viewer of the painting right there as if we are almost in that moment. The portrait is truly focusing on realism. The main differences between medieval and renaissance art was medieval art focused on religion. It stressed world beyond everyday life, used formal figures to express religious concerns, and portrayed scenes of the holy land. Renaissance The Renaissance started in Italy in the 14th century. It was referred to as the “rebirth” because it brought back attention to art and science. The Middle Ages were really religion-dominated. The Renaissance turned the attention to individual and worldly experiences; they were the main themes of the Renaissance art movement. Art benefited from the patronage of such influential groups as Medici family of Florence, the Sforza family of Milan and the Popes Julius II and Leo X.
Renaissance art history began as civic history; it was an expression of civic pride. The first such history was Filippo Villani's De origine civitatis Florentiae et eiusdem famosis civibus, written about 1381-82. Florentine artists revived an art that was almost dead, Villani asserts, just as Dante had restored poetry after its decline in the Middle Ages. The revival was begun by Cimabue and completed by Giotto, who equalled the ancient painters in fame and even surpassed them in skill and talent. After Giotto came his followers, Stefano, Taddeo Gaddi, and Maso, uomini illustri all, who, together with notable jurists, poets, musicians, theologians, physicians, orators, and others, made Florence the preeminent city of Italy.
Though the Renaissance era included all of Europe, Italy was the cradle of the movement. The cities of Florence, Rome and Venice were of great importance to this period. Major artists created art mainly in these three. As the center of Italy, Rome held the residence of the Pope and many other important factors. Throughout history, the Roman Catholic Church was very insistent on promoting their ideas. During this time, they used artists and their creativity to promote the Bible and other aspects of their beliefs. Artists were paid, or commissioned by patrons (often the Pope) to create art they wanted. One of the most ambitious patrons was Pope Julius II, who realized the impact visual images had on people’s ideas (Kleiner, 599). Pope Julius II was called the warring Pope, because he often went and involved himself in wars. He also held very humanistic ideas. Because of this, Michelangelo’s relationship to Pope Julius II was very different from his relationship with Pope Leo X, who succeeded Julius II. Julius, because of his adaptions to humanistic thoughts, he let Michelangelo express himself to the fullest, even when forcing him to paint the Sistine Chapel. Leo X, however, was very critical of everything Michelangelo set out upon. This resulted a strained relationship, and eventually abandonment of projects that were supposed to be completed. It is clear that Pope Julius II had a liking for Michelangelo, while the Medici’s looked on him as a type of lowly artist subject to their will.
While paintings in the Renaissance and beyond still had a ways to go in terms of technique and perspective, the progress made in Italy during this time period was astounding. Painters were able to convey emotions and feelings like never before, showing the world that they could transport them to scenes they had only seen in flat, Byzantine images. In a time of straining to make art look real, the use of perspective was the key.
In Florence, Italy, the famous, Leonardo da Vinci started painting The Mona Lisa one of the most well known paintings in the entire world, in 1503 and finally completed it in 1517. One of the biggest reasons for the popularity of the painting is the artist himself. Leonardo is one of the most recognized artists of all time. The Mona Lisa was painted after Lisa del Giocondo, the wife of a wealthy merchant Francesco del Giocondo from Tuscany. The painting was created to be a celebration of their home's completion as well as the arrival of their second son. The Mona Lisa is one of the most well know paintings from the time of the Renaissance. This painting as well as Leonardo da Vinci, inspired and affected many of the artists and writers in the Renaissance. It also changed the way people saw and made art. During the Renaissance art was usually just what they saw. They drew people the way they were, with no real sense of freedom to be creative. The Mona Lisa's background was mainly different because of its landscape. The Mona Lisa was one of the first paintings if not the first to have an imaginary background. This means that the background was so unique, because no other artists had decided to create a piece with an Aerial view, creativity, and freedom. It opened up new possibilities for other artists to step of out their comfort zone and not only make what was expected of them.
The era in which Cimabue and Giotto grew influenced how they saw art and how they identified with their portrayal of images. Cimabue a master of the byzantine era and Giotto, early renaissance, however Giotto di Bondone was a pupil of Cimabue. “Cimabue was the last great painter working in the Byzantine tradition” (Finnan). His pupil Giotto was instrumental in the renaissance art movement, influenced by religion. “Di Bondone chose to paint his subjects, the overwhelming majority were religious figures, in a solid and classicizing way reminiscent of Arnolfo di Cambio” (Artble 2015). Though Giotto had been a pupil of Cimabue, each having produced a large painting of the Madonna and child, Mary and baby Jesus. Though Giotto recreated Cimabue’s Madonna and child there are distinct differences between the two paintings.
Architectural focus had changed from the cathedral in the Medieval era to other, more classical and secular subjects, such as castles and homes of significant rulers. The style, subjects, and overall attitude of painting was something that underwent very significant changes during the progression from Medieval times to the Renaissance. Generally, paintings became more secular, and less focused on aspects of the church, as the Renaissance approached. Medieval paintings seem to be focused almost entirely on religion and are given heavenly attributes, while paintings of the Renaissance consist mainly of secular subjects and contain much more realism, especially noted in human subjects. The Italian Renaissance included some of the greatest artists we have ever seen from Leonard Da Vinci, to Michelangelo, and Raphael. The Renaissance took place from the late thirteenth to sixteenth centuries and is know as the ‘rebirth’. The idea that the rebirth of the arts after being asleep for a thousand years is an amazing thing to grasp. This time brought back light to liberal arts, which were on the brink of being extinct. (Murray 2) What is also interesting about art during this time was that most of the art had Christian in its roots, for example, Botticelli’s The Allegory of Spring (Faure 1) is said to have had a Christian interpretation. (Murray) “Every Italian artist, willingly took the title of architect, sculptor, and painter” (Faure 2). At the beginning of the fifteenth century, the Italian painters had asked the Flemish painters for their secret techniques because the Italians felt like the language of painting was one that was always meant for them. (Faure 4) The sculptors claimed their inspiration from ancient works. Lastly the Renaissance introduced idea of individualism, which helped the Italians get away from everything that was going on during that time. Art during the Renaissance included painting, sculpting and architecture, all of which were an important part in expressing the idea of individualism and making art what is is today.

The Renaissance was a revival or a rebirth of cultural awareness and learning among art, law, language, literature, philosophy, science, and mathematics. This period took place between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Renaissance in Italy flourished in the 15th century and spread throughout most of Europe in the 16th century.
