Arthur Miller's tragedy
Arthur miller's concept of tragedy

I have read many tragedies, and each tragedy I read, seemed different such as the way each play got to the climax and ended. In the classic play of Antigone by Sophocles, the tragic hero is Antigone who is a noble character and has several tragic flaws that makes the play very dramatic. Another well-known tragedy was Hamlet by Shakespeare, and the play exaggerates the revenge Prince Hamlet is told to unleash on his uncle, Claudius. On the other hand, the play The Crucible demonstrates Arthur Miller’s definition of a tragedy. Arthur Miller defines tragedy as, “I think the tragic feeling is evoked in us when we are in the presence of a character who is ready to lay down his life, if need be, if need be, to secure one thing – his sense of personal dignity.” However, the tragedy The Crucible, has several characters whose dignity is so high, that they are willing to die for it.
John Proctor was a farmer in his mid-thirties who was well

known in the town. He was not interested in any faction in Salem, and he was even feared in the town. From the time when John Proctor was introduced, to the time when he was killed for witch craft, he always demonstrated his pride to the reader. For example, on page 31, Proctor says, “I mean it solemnly, Rebecca; I like not the smell of this authority.” Proctor shows that he was too prideful and uninterested to follow Parris’s rules because he does not like it when someone tries to tell him what he should do. Later in Act four of the play, Proctor refuses to sign the confession and says, "I have confessed myself! is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are! it is enough!” (pg. 142). In this quote, Proctor boldly admits to his flaws, which took a toll on him. Another time when Proctor shows how much his dignity means to him when he said, “You will not use me! I am no Sarah Good or Tituba; I am John Proctor! You will not use me! It is part of salvation that you should use me!” (pgs. 142-143). Proctor shows how much his reputation means to him and that he was not willing to be used by someone. Lastly John Proctor’s pride shows tremendously when he said, “"Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! . . . leave me my name!" (pg. 143). In this quote, Proctor displays how much pride he holds to his name. Another character in The Crucible that demonstrates pride was Giles Corey.
Giles was an 83-year-old strong-minded man and in the play, he was accused of witchcraft. In Act three, Giles stands with John Proctor in challenging the girls’ accusations. He also believes that Putnam is accusing him with witchcraft to take away his land. On page 85, Giles said, “They be tellin’ lies about my wife, sir, I – “. Giles Corey shows his pride by standing up for his wife, Martha Corey, and he is willing to do anything to get his wife out of the situation she is in. Then later in Act three, Giles says to Putnam, “I’ll cut your throat, Putnam, I’ll kill you yet!” (pg. 98). During this part of the play, Giles is furious at Putnam for trying to take his land, and he shows how much pride he has with his land. In Giles Corey’s final words, he says, “More weight”, because he wanted his sons to inherit his property instead of Putnam. This quote demonstrates Arthur Miller’s definition of a tragedy because Giles is willing to die for his family’s
future. The last character in The Crucible who I thought demonstrated dignity through his/her words and actions, was Elizabeth Proctor. In the play, Elizabeth’s pride makes forgiving her husband a tough task to do. Elizabeth Proctor is a bitter wife who has been hurt by her husband and her pride adds more tension to the already rocky relationship. For example, on page 61, she says “There be a certain danger in calling such a name-I am no Goody Good . . . She thinks to take my place, John”. Elizabeth cannot see the fact Proctor needs her forgiveness before he is able to forgive himself. In the end, she was able to forgive her husband for what he did. But she let it get to the point where Proctor allowed himself to be killed because he wanted her to see the good in his heart. At the end of Act four, Elizabeth said to Hale, “He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him.” (pg. 145). She says this because she finally realizes the good in John Proctor’s heart. Overall, even though the play didn’t end how I wanted it to, Arthur Miller did a great job on making the play a true tragedy. But the reader saw that the characters with pride, suffered the most even with some putting their lives on the line. However, those characters who died because of pride showed that they would honor themselves or their close ones before they would let someone take advantage of them.
In the film, “The Crucible”, Arthur Miller portrays Giles Corey as a "knotted with muscle, canny, inquisitive, and still powerful. He didn't give a hoot for public opinion, and only in his last years did he bother much with the church. He was a crank and a nuisance, but withal a deeply innocent and brave man.” In the following essay, I will explain how Giles Corey acts as a foil to John Proctor and how Corey serves to illuminate the strengths and weaknesses of the main character.
Tragedy is a story or play that has a signifigant conflict of morals, with a noble protagonist displaying a tragic flaw that is their strength but leads to their downfall. The exposition of the story is when Antigone is talking with her sister and we learn of what has happened. The turning point of this play is when Creon tries to mend his wrongs by burying Polynices and freeing Antigone. Antigone herself is the tragic hero because she dies for what she believes morally right. Antigone's tragic flaw is that she has only sees her point of view which leads to her death.
A tragedy is when someone drops my chocolate milkshake from Chick-Fil-A in the parking lot, but the Greek definition of a tragedy is,”a play in which the protagonist, usually a man of importance and outstanding personal qualities, falls to disaster through the combination of a personal failing and circumstances with which he cannot deal”(Collins). In Sophocles’ play Antigone, Creon is the most tragic character because of his hubris, hamartia, and he is the primary Antagonist.
To many people all over this world, pride is a very big deal. To have a good name is to be a great person, but would lying to stay alive help keep pride in life? A few characters in The Crucible had so much pride in their reputations that they lost their lives to keep their names good. Reputations are important, but maybe keeping themselves alive for their families and God should have been a bit more important than keeping pride.
...so much” (40). Incidentally, Giles’ tendency to speak his mind also hurts others, as is the case when his wife is falsely accused of witchcraft, partly due to the information Giles told Reverend Hale. As the play becomes more dramatic and as more innocent lives are taken, the hardened 83-year-old recognizes the growing instability of the Salem courts. When Giles was indicted, he refused to answer aye or nay to his indictment for fear of being hanged and losing his property. Elizabeth explained that Giles “died Christian under the law” (135). By saying he died Christian under the law, Arthur Miller may be comparing Giles to Jesus Christ, in the sense that he was an innocent man who died because others have sinned. Likewise, because Giles took a stand against the corrupt court, many in the village considered him a hero. Clearly, Giles can be considered a dynamic character in the play, as he started out not giving “a hoot for public opinion” (40) but later changed his mind and sacrificed himself for the benefit of others. Giles Corey was able to use his outspoken behavior, which often resulted in the punishment of himself and others, and finally use it for the good of those he loved.
Giles Corey is more of a minor character, but yet still plays a significant role in The Crucible. Not only is he important because his wife was charged of being a witch, but he also plays an essential role in court. He defends not only his wife but tries to defend his friends as well; especially Proctor. Giles is a lot braver than most people think he is. He acts foolish at first but starts to change and reveal his true courage later on in the play.
Tragedy is interpreted in various ways. For example the wise Greek philosopher Aristotle defines “tragedy” as a story that contains a character that commits a terrible mistake in his life that leads to his pitiful death. On the other hand, Arthur Miller defines “tragedy” as a characteristic common to all human beings who are willing to give up their lives for the necessary and righteous causes, and for their dignities. A composite definition of a tragedy is a character in a story that recognizes his awful error committed, and is willing to give his life for the necessary cause that would leads to his inevitable death. In The Crucible, John Proctor’s dilemma is to either confess about his affair with Abigail or remain silent about this secret to keep his reputation. John Proctor does have a tragic death and is thus a tragic hero, but he fails to be an admirable character in The Crucible for committing adultery.
A tragic hero is a noble man who commits a fatal flaw. The hero’s downfall is a result of their choices which leads to a punishment that exceeds the crime. “The difference between Proctor and Willy Loman is enormous; the former is the rather typical tragic hero who is defiant to the end, the latter is trapped in submission and is living a lie” (McGill 4). John Proctor is one of the main characters in The Crucible. he is married to Elizabeth Proctor and they live in Salem. In Arthur Miller’s famous play, The Crucible, John Proctor represents a classic tragic hero because he is a well respected man of noble stature, he is conflicted because of his fatal flaw, and his downfall is a result of his own choices.
“More Weight!” Said Giles Corey, a character from The Crucible, as he was being pressed to death for not saying yay or nay to the accusation of witchcraft. Giles Corey was an 83 year old man, and very stubborn. He was arrested for contempt of court and because he would not give any names. Then someone accused him of being a witch from being in jail. Giles Corey and I share a few personality traits such as being loyal to family and friends, very comica and prefer to instigate situations
A forbidden passion between Proctor and Abigail leads to the tragedy of the play. Proctor is a man with a lot of moral problems, who always concerns only the care of his family and social welfare. When avoiding his involvement in the trails of witchcraft, he is accused of witchery and sentenced to death. Arthur Miller shows us Proctor as a common farmer, who is honest, and respectable, who only cares for his family. Proctor lives in the town with his wife and their children.
Although Aristotle's tragic hero would be a character in a high social or political standing, Arthur Miller portrays John Proctor as a common farmer that is honest and living a respectable life in a Puritan town with a wife and three children. However, as the play opens, the audience discovers that Proctor has a significant secret, which was his affair with a young girl named Abigail Williams. Abigail doesn't want to believe that it is over between her and John and tries to kill Elizabeth Proctor by engaging in witchcraft with a few other girls in the town. As the town uncovers the antics of the girls and are outraged, the girls start to cry out names of others they have supposedly seen with the Devil in order to save themselves. Therefore, the audience perceives that the affair between John and Abigail is the instigator of all the hysteria surrounding the witch trials, signifying the consequences of a small human error.
(Miller, 96). Although this, together with his thirty-three prior encounters in court, has alienated him from other townspeople, his attempt at trying to disprove the girls serves as an important stepping stone to making the judges realize that the girls are lying. Another event that shows Giles' unyielding personality is his refusal to admit to practicing witchcraft as he was tortured to death. Elizabeth describes his death by stone press while talking with Proctor in the jail, saying, that Giles “had a tender smile. (saying) “more weight”” (135)....
In the play Antigone, the debate over who is the real tragic hero is and the controversy of Greek ideals in the Antigone continues on to this day. Who is the tragic hero in Antigone? Is it Antigone herself or is it Creon the ruler of Thebes? The belief that Antigone is, is a strong one. Still there are people who think Creon is the tragic hero. Antigone is widely thought as the tragic her. The play is named after her. In addition, she is the antagonist in it. Many people usually associate the antagonist, the good guy as a tragic hero. Look at much television shows, especially cartoons, the good person usually wins. Then there are those who might think Creon was the tragic hero because the gods were against him, and that he truly loved his country. There are five criteria or standards you must meet first in order to be a tragic hero. First, you must be a person of high character or status. The character must not be too overwhelmingly evil or good. Then they must be brought from happiness to misery. Then brought from happiness to misery. Second, the hero enacts a harmartia, "wrong act." This either may be a flaw in judgment or an error. Third, the hero experiences a perpateia, reversal of fortune. This is the tragic downfall or plot twist in the story. Fourth, the hero recognizes his or her responsibility. Fifth, the story ends with a catastrophe. The catastrophe either may be an emotional event, this even may be a death.
One that many people realized was the reoccurring theme of greed and power lead to the destruction of others. This theme is shown throughout many other pieces of literature like The tale of Sleepy Hollow, Macbeth and many other works of literature. The theme of greed can be shown in The Crucible through the character of Mr. Putnam. “If Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property - that 's law! And there is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his neighbors for his land!”This quote came from Giles Corey. His wife has been accused of witchcraft because she was reading suspicious books. Giles Corey is defending others in the jail and telling the courts that Mr. Putnam is a land greedy man that is killing off his neighbors for their land. Mr. Putnam’s greed for more land caused him to accuse innocent women of witchcraft and lead to the destruction of lives and
...aw that is a choice, is punished excessively for this flaw, undergoes a downfall that leads to realization, and causes the audience to reach a moment of catharsis. Much after Aristotle’s time, a playwright names Arthur Miller wanted to amend Aristotle’s six original criteria for a tragic hero because the tragic heroes in his plays didn’t fit some of the characteristics. He believed that everyone has a right to tragedy and one doesn’t have to be noble in order to experience it. Some might agree with Miller and justify that Antigone is also a tragic hero in that she may not fit every criteria (no moment of realization or catharsis), but she still should be able to qualify. However, Creon in this case is better suited as a tragic hero because he fits all of the criteria. If Creon is the protagonist and the tragic hero of this play, then why is the play called Antigone?
