The giant wooden activity cube is a toy that has 4 parts by the side and one above. The side parts contain a board, a watch, squares to spin and a rainbow xylophone. While the upper part of a cube contain a spin, slide and the beads. This toy improves multiple things in a child’s development. Firstly, it focuses on the cognitive side, as it makes the child think. He/she will think about things like, where to move the beads to reach to the other side. In addition, it also supports the physical development, as the child will start moving his hand and fingers by playing with the whole toy. Furthermore, the age range for this toy is 12 months to 36 months. In my point of view, I see that the toy is suitable for the age range of this toy. They learn stuff from the toy but also at the same time, they have fun. I personally would recommend this toy for parents. The toy will help improve some the child’s development area in a perfect way and parents buying this toy will not make them buy another toy, because the toy has more than one section in it. The great thing about this toy is that the toy can be played in more then one way. However the problem with it is that the child is not moving. I really enjoyed observing for this notebook activity because for the first time in my whole life, I had to determine which toys fostered symbolic play and then I had to analyze why a certain toy was beneficial in promoting symbolic play. I observed three different classrooms for this experiment: Cherub’s Preschool, Bethel’s Mom2Mom group, and Mrs. Dexter’s kindergarten class. In the Cherub’s Preschool, the children had multiple toys that promoted symbolic learning. For example, Brody found some farm animals in a bin and he took them out and began to make the sounds that those animals make. This demonstrated symbolic play because he was able to place a symbol (the sound of the animal)
I think many ways young children could acquire knowledge and watching these types of programming could be a way for them to learn. These types of shows intrigue young children and I believe that these shows have a lot to offer for young children. Commercial and public programming both has the same goals of promoting social-emotional to young children. They want to make sure children understand and manage their emotions the right way, develop social skills, how to share, learn about the past, and many more. In the show, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood His pet fish died but his parent told him that it is okay to be sad but there are ways that he could feel better. They claim that asking questions, drawing, and doing something you enjoy doing will help. I believe that their goal in this episode was to understand and manage emotions because it introduces different ways children could deal with similar situations. These shows are also promoting social skills that are necessary for school and life.
