To begin, the giant African snail is becoming a widely dispersed critter. This snail was first discovered in Eastern Africa in the 1800’s. As time progressed, it dispersed all over the Southern hemisphere (Stokes). It can be found in Asia, the Caribbean islands, and multiple islands within the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Even though it can be found in those regions, Australia and New Zealand are also locations that it can be located (“Giant”, Stokes). After a short time, the giant African snail arrived to the Western Hemisphere. For example, there have been verifications of it in the United States. These detections have mainly happened in the Southern states; however, there has been notice of this snail in the states of Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. In addition, this African snail eats over 500 different kinds of vegetation, which provides it with calcium that it needs for its shell. It devours stuff like cocoa, cucumbers, melons, and almost any kind of bean. All of this vegetation can be found along the southern states of North America (Stokes, Than). The next thing it eats is quite strange. The giant African snail forages on fungi, lichens, animal matter, and algae (Stokes). Lastly, the giant African snail has proven to be a really big pest. One large contributing factor is that this snail has been confirmed of carrying the rat lungworm parasite; nevertheless, Aeromonus Hydrophila has also been found within the snail. The lungworm parasite is a microscopic worm, while the Aeromonus Hydrophila is a bacteria, and both can cause serious illness (Stokes, Than). Equally important, this snail is causing farmers to relocate due to their diet.
