Ever since the start of humanity, mankind has had a fascination with the unexplained; from ghouls, werewolves, vampires, sasquatches and all things that go bump in the night. However, many of those mythical creatures being scientifically proven, ghosts elude that lucidity. Ghosts are the spirits of the dead manifesting to the living eye in a usually hazy form. This phenomena can also be felt through hearing voices or footsteps, fragrances such as perfume or being touched by the presence. The history of this kind of supernatural dates back to primitive times as well as strong beliefs attached to them. Come the present, there is much controversy. Skeptics, believers, ghost hunters and mediums all play a role in the unfolding story of what is the paranormal.
In the mesopotamian era many ghoulish beliefs were established. For instance, in babylonian religions, spirits were known as gidim. Supposedly created at the time of death, the gidim would take the personality and memories from the dead before traveling to the netherworld to uphold a role much like that of the living world. Life after death was a strong belief in ancient Egypt. The egyptians had the ideology that spirits could cause pain and trauma to the living or even come to their aid. Their beliefs in the afterlife continued to evolve throughout the centuries and their views on the afterlife recorded on tomes, walls and in the Book of the Dead. In Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad spirits were seemingly friendly and did not interact heavily with the living world described "as a vapor, gibbering and whining into the earth". However as time progressed and Greece evolved by 500 bc, ghosts had become terrifying entities. Ghosts were believed to stay by the corpses of the d...

...lled a seance. The medium conducts a ritual and let’s the entity take over his or her body, the body becoming a bridge for the “spirit communicator”. The medium appears to leave the body and the ghost is able to communicate to the earth plane. This is what is known as channeling. When the spirit links with the medium it “overshadows the consciousness of the medium to a greater or lesser degree”. Mediumship has always been a controversial subject. It has been said by many that it is just preying on the weak who have the utmost desires to contact their loved ones after a passing. Most mediums have been accused of fraud at some point in their career. According to David Thompson (a physical medium) however, “Usually such critics have never sat in a séance, have limited understanding of physical mediumship or have an ulterior motive for creating controversy”.
In the psychic community, mediumship is the most feared and least understood. That’s because psychic phenomena can’t be approached through intellect. Even in today’s enlightened society, skeptics analyze mediums as sitting in a dark room, watching tables rise from the floor, accompanied by woo-woo sounds.
“The strange thing about the paranormal is that no matter how often [a person proves] it, it remains unproven” (Chopra). Given personal experience and evidence by professionals that have dedicated their lives to find answers regarding the paranormal and the afterlife. There will always be skeptics so long as there are humans with their own thoughts and opinions. Despite what skeptics say, ghosts exist; there are several eyewitness accounts, religious traditions, and traditional cultural stories that support the paranormal.

There are many theories as to how someone or something becomes a ghost. This is called Paranormal which means beyond normal and scientific name is parapsychology, which means study of interactions between living organisms and their external environment that seem to transcend the known physical laws of nature (Britannica, 147). In 1920, Dr. William McDougall was the first scientific psychical who research about Paranormal Activity (Stefanik, 2000). According to Stefanik, Paranormal experiences often seem weird, uncanny, or unnatural. Typically they are quite rare but there are a few exceptional "stars" such as who have regular paranormal experiences and may show seemingly consistent paranormal ability (Daniel, 2004). Different types of scientists who researched about paranormal activity was spiritualists. The scientists accepted paranormal to be real. There are believers and nonbelievers about the paranormal phenomenon. Discussion about parapsychological phenomena has assumed emotional overtones, unsuitable to scientific discipline, and outspoken but contradictory opinions are still voiced (Cauz, 2010, p.147)

aranormal activity has been a cause of fear and excitement throughout history. The unknown attracts the curiosity from those who wonder whether the supernatural is real or a figment of the imagination. Ghosts are one of the supernatural beings whose existence is questioned every day. Many want to deny the existence of ghosts because they are terrified of other phantoms who may exist and ignore the evidence that has been brought forth throughout the years. However, ghosts are supernatural pheromones whose existence still impacts today’s society.
The Nelly Butler hauntings is referred to as the first recorded ghost story in American history (LiBrizzi 5), and possibly the most exciting hauntings to date as there are still many unsolved mysteries. The apparition appeared on more than 30 separate occasions to over 100 witnesses in Sullivan, Maine, just over fifteen years after the American Revolution (5-6). Although the Nelly Butler apparition is one of the most convincing ghosts of all time, it was subject to suspicions of fraud. These claims turn out to be groundless as the evidence reveals the ghost to be genuine.
The third school of thought is mostly exposed by Reginald Scot the author of ” discoverie of witchcraft”, who considers and believes in the presence of abnormal apparitions, yet holds that ghosts cannot take the form of normal human beings. Thus these apparitions are
The Mesopotamian people also believed in an afterlife. Through the Epic of Gilgamesh, we see that this civilization had an ancient version of what we consider to be heaven and hell. Their hell was controlled by the Queen of Darkness, and was believed to be a place of no return. The epic describes this place as a place of darkness where "dust is their food and clay is their meat"(sources, p5). Their underworld was where everyone who stood in the way of the gods.
Are ghosts real? That is the question that most of society deliberates day after day. The true definition of a ghost is a soul or spirit of a deceased individual that can appear in visible form or other manifestations to the living. Ghosts are of the most common paranormal belief in the world. Most people believe in ghosts because of a personal experience, whether that was seeing or sensing an unexplained presence. Who wouldn’t want to believe that our beloved family members are looking for us?
Ghosts, as with any other misunderstood group or people, have been preyed upon by others without understanding. The lack of knowledge about ghosts and haunting activity has led people astray as to what they really are. What Hollywood and television portrays is very inaccurate and cannot be relied upon as truthful. They show these spirits of the dead as being evil in nature, filled with malice and harmful intent. But that this is not the case. The field of paranormal activity is amazing. It has caught the imagination of people from every walk of life. It has always interested me and has influenced me to pick this as the topic for my research. Through this research I wish to uncover the truth about the existence of ghosts. I also wish to correct the wrong notions that people have about ghosts and enlighten non-believers.
To the early Greeks, death was dark and mysterious. Early myth about the underworld and life after death is very vague, and it is likely that the Greeks just did not understand death or the underworld. In Homer’s myths the underworld, Erebus, was the child of Chaos along with Night. The early Greeks, according to Hamilton, believed that
For many years, people have debated whether or not spirits are real. Some people get scared at the fact that there might be something unknown lurking in their house in the middle of the night making their footsteps known to everyone in it. Maybe that person feels watched upon or feel some kind of presence in their home, or even sees shadows moving their way through rooms. Different people around the world have their own opinions based on religion and experiences when talking about angels, demons, and the spirits that have life after death. New technology is getting closer to detecting these energies happening in the world today. The history of haunting dates back many years, and more people want to get involved because of the new technology.
In ancient times, the times of the Greeks and Romans to be precise, the inhabitants believed that death was most certainly not the end. As a matter of fact, many of these people built entire religions around the prospect of life after death, such as the Greeks and the Romans. A strong belief of the Greeks was that the ghost or “shade'; was so extremely powerful that “many a time the murderer would mutilate his victim to flee the dead man’s direct revenge.'; (B-Revenge)
century, ghost hunting is almost as scientific as physics. Ghosts are now normally categorized into one of three groups: a residual haunting, a spirit that lived as a human , or a spirit that never lived as a human (Killen, 1).
