After riding a wave of uncertainty, the Ghostbusters reboot managed to avoid disaster – although it was unable to best The Secret Life of Pets.
For a second weekend in a row, The Secret Life of Pets retained its position atop the box office field – grabbing $50.5 million. The animated film, featuring the voice of Kevin Hart, suffered a massive 52% drop in attendance, although that’s often the case after enjoying a $100+ million opening. Still, domestic audiences have been extremely kind to Pets, which has already amassed a hefty $203.1 million. Lump-on $50.8 million from abroad, and it brings the film’s worldwide total to $253.9 million.
In second, you’ll find the Ghostbusters reboot, falling just shy of Pets – earning a solid $46 million. The reboot, starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristin Wiig, interrupted a 7-day winning streak for Pets on Friday (with $17.2 million), but ultimately was unable to maintain enough momentum to come out on top for the weekend. Regardless, Ghostbusters will require a boost from foreign markets to catch-up to its obese $144 million production budget.

The film ‘Gladiator’ was released in 2000. A thrilling action film, it was a huge success, scooping five Oscars and earning over $427 million dollars. Sir Ridley Scott- who directed the film-already had many great films to his name, such as ‘Alien’, ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘American Gangster’, so it was no surprise when this film became one of the highest earners of the year 2000.
The 1970s consisted of many nostalgic teen movies from Grease to American Graffiti to Cooley High, but few hold up as well in the present day as the cult classic Animal House. Walking around a college campus, one can still hear students quoting lines from the film, or see a poster of John Belushi chugging a bottle of Jack Daniels in someone’s living room, or even see students wearing the infamous “College” shirt. Animal House is such a staple of college life, even with it being over thirty years since its release. Being able to relate to students throughout the different generations is the main reason this film has done so well for itself.
With an estimated budget of around $200,000, the first Mad Max was obviously primitive in its effects and casting. (IMDB.com) However, the movie, as of May 21, 1982, made over $8,750,000 in the U.S.. (Boxofficemojo.com) That’s an outstanding profit when you compare it to how much it spent. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, came in with a bigger budget at $2,000,000 and interestingly enough, even with the overhauled budget, the film as of May 21, 1982 had only made about $24 million in the U.S. In the end, revenue is revenue and it’s still higher than the first film, so it’s an improvement. (IMDB.com) Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome came in with a budget of about $12 million and as of July 12, 1985, the movie had earned over $36 million in the U.S. Thunderdome’s profit was large but only three times what they spent as compared to the previous films who made 12 times as much. (IMBD.com) Last but not least, Mad Max: Fury Road had a whopping $150 million to work with when in production. Disappointingly, up to today it has only made around $153 million in the U.S., which is barely breaking even.
It fails to produce necessary laughs containing a wonderful and talented cast including Adam Sandler, Harvey Keitel, Patricia Arquette, and Quentin Tarantino. It made $212m in its second weekend in the US. In my opinion, it's better to see a film without hearing too much about it beforehand. With The Passion I was expecting to be bored for the first hour while seeing Christ preaching to his followers and healing the sick, but Gibson didn't tire us all with that, he filmed it in an interesting way which pleasantly surprised me. In fact, I was very impressed with the opening scenes. Instead of showing us Jesus' life from birth to death, Gibson set the film at the last two days of his life while having the odd flashback to Jesus' earlier days.
