Paranormal activity dates back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. According to Triangle Paranormal Investigators (2000) “a predominant number of paranormal investigators were testing alleged psychics and mediums in order to debunk their claims of phenomenon” (p.1). The most paranormal activity stories are found in folklore, popular culture, and experience from individual people. The most influential paranormal investigator is Harry Price because of his experience with Borley Rectory which is the most haunted house in England. According to Bob Larson (1997) “in the eighties new agers were busy channeling the spirits of Ramtha and a host of other entities” (p.80). Paranormal activity can relate to Christianity in a sense of way because the cleaning of evil ghosts involves Christian people. Anecdotal, experimental, and scientific approach are all ways to approach paranormal activity. Paranormal activity will continue to live on in our world today. Ghosts have always been present in human life. Ghosts can be traced back as far as 2,000 B.C. (Crystal, 1995). According to Heidi Keller, “the oldest religions and the oldest writings of humanity already show fights with demons, the lives, and battles of gods and human contact with those gods and the souls of dead people” (2003). The first record of a ghost comes from the Babylonian story (Crystal, 1995). The word ghost itself comes from the Old English word gast. A ghost can be heard, felt, or smelt. According to Paradie, he states “the first ghost story recorded belongs to the Granite State all the way back in 1682 when a New Castle, New Hampshire family experienced some interesting activity that made them move out of their house and it even followed them their too” (2010). The University of Maryland has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1856 as the Maryland Agricultural College. Built between 1804 and 1812, The Rossborough Inn is the oldest building on campus today (Ghost Tour, 2). With its history, it is no surprise that the Inn has been a hotspot for ghost activity. Knowing that there have been numerous reports of ghosts at Rossborough, I visited the Inn to ask current employees at the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism, located in Rossborough Inn, if they themselves had experienced anything bizarre or if they had known others who had. I entered the small office where three women were talking and with their permission asked about their experiences with ghosts at Rossborough. Upon asking my question, all three smiled, although shaking their head, they indicated they had not. However, they all had heard of the stories, and one of the women replied and told me to speak with the University Archivist. She told me that she has spoken with the archivist, and upon learning the stories, she said that she “got freaked out and really wanted to go home.”
The book, What’s So Super About the Supernatural tells of well known stories about poltergeists. A poltergeist is a noisy or high energy ghost who might perform violent activity. A young girl by the name of Tina Resch lived in Ohio and is known to be a poltergeist. “No ghost was ever seen or heard on camera; however when the camera was inadvertently left running, the tape showed Tina surreptitiously pulling over a lamp” (Gardner). The evidence was found after people were reporting the activity. Newspaper reporters went to the scene to check out the action only to find evidence of Tina throwing objects violently around the house. Another example of proof that ghosts exist goes back to a case involving a poltergeist in England. An eleven-year-old boy by the name of Matthew Manning performed several violent actions that his dad had noticed and reported. Gardner writes, “ On one occasion, Matthew’s bed was thrown about and left leaning at an angle against the wall” (Gardner). These examples are not the only reported cases regarding ghosts and paranormal activity. Many stories about the supernatural have been told and passed down for several generations. This movement began with a dream Wovoka had during a solar eclipse on the night of Jan 1, 1889. Wovoka’s dream included a vision in which all Native Americans were taken into the sky and the earth swallowed all white folk to revert back it its natural state. (In this way, perhaps, Gordon accomplishes many of the same feats as Stephen King and Edgar Allen Poe).
For years, ghosts and poltergeists have been a part of our popular lexicon. From stories told around the campfire, to motion pictures like The Haunting, to books like the Scary Story series, everyone has heard a good ghost story or two. Many people claim to have actually been party to a few supernatural experiences themselves. But for as long as we have told these frightful stories, science has been attempting to explain them beyond the typical bump in the dark.
Some of the earliest reports of paranormal phenomenon occurred in the first century A.D. Roman author and statesman Pliny the Younger wrote about an encounter he had with a ghost in one of his famous letters. He stated that an elderly man with a beard and rattling chains had been haunting his home in the Athens. (History.com) In Germany, the first poltergeist was reported in 856 A.D. A poltergeist being a ghost that causes disturbances; making noises and moving objects about. This particular poltergeist tormented the family living in the large farmhouse by throwing stones and starting fires, among various other acts. (History.com)
Next I want to introduce to you The Banshee. The Banshee is believed to be ghost woman seen mostly in Irish Folklore. The Banshee is depicted "in Various versions which have been described, from a woman with long, red hair and very pale skin to an older woman with stringy, gray hair, rotten teeth and fiery red eyes.” (darksang.com)
Ghost stories have been popular throughout the ages. During the nineteenth century, there was a sudden boom and ghost stories were made popular. Storytelling was the main source of entertainment as there weren't any films, TV's or computer games. People would gather around in groups telling or reading each other stories. The stories were made more real by the superstitions people kept and as the rooms were lit by dim candle light, it built a sense of atmosphere. Most ghost stories were written in the nineteenth century period, so people could imagine such things happening to them, in the places they lived. As storytelling was the main form of entertainment, people had nothing to compare it to, so it built tension, suspense and fear. In the nineteenth century there weren't many scientific advances. Everything was blamed on higher or supernatural forces, therefore, people believed the explanations given in ghost stories. I will be comparing and contrasting four ghost stories which were all written in the nineteenth century. They are ?The Old Nurse?s Story? by Elizabeth Gaskell, 1855 and ?The Ostler? by Wilkie Collins, 1855.

The apparition appeared on more than 30 separate occasions to over 100 witnesses in Sullivan, Maine, just over fifteen years after the American Revolution (5-6). Although the Nelly Butler apparition is one of the most convincing ghosts of all time, it was subject to suspicions of fraud. These claims turn out to be groundless as the evidence reveals the ghost to be genuine.

The world around us has become more technical with the findings and history of ghosts not cited correctly (Stories, 2014)). The place ghosts come from or occupy varies depending on their spiritual abilities. Ghosts feel more comfortable in a place that is unrestrained and enables them to move freely (Zamora, 2014).
