Today, Ghana is a popular country amongst several charity organizations and groups, and because of this the country’s origins often get overlooked. The country has more to than what 's on the surface, making Ghana very intriguing. The country has been under several peoples rule, but mainly the British (Sphere of Influence). It was not until later that colonial power came to Ghana because of African culture and economic conditions. African culture played a huge role into promoting colonial power in Ghana. The people of Ghana referred to themselves as Ghanaians, making their country independent from other African countries. Before colonial times history was passed on through word of mouth by oral historians. Storytelling is very popular amongst rural villages, and is used to entertain but allude to misbehavior of adults, without saying their names. (Gall). Another part of the Ghanaians culture is the use of traditional instruments. They use instruments like the kora which is used by people telling stories (Griffin).Another form of art commonly seen is the craft of the Kente cloth. The weaving of the famous Kente cloth began during the Ashanti empire in the 1600. A legend told to Ghanaians is that two men saw a spider create its web and they thought that it was similar to how people wove mats from plant fibers (Griffin). Over time the country became poverty stricken, even after it had been colonized with the help of Britain. It was because of the people handling the money and projects. The country itself had a perfect source of income from resources and trade. Ghana had natural resources such as: gold, timber, diamonds, bauxite, manganese, and fish. Along with their natural resources, they had good agricultural products like: cocoa, coconuts, coffee, pineapples, cashews, pepper, other food crops, rubber (Countries of the World and Their Leaders Yearbook).
