For most, driving is a feeling of freedom and an indulgence of happiness. People all over could easily tell you the wonderful feeling just being behind the wheel gives them. Although so many love the feeling of a steering wheel beneath their hands and a gas pedal under their feet, there are people who unfortunately do not receive the same free feeling of driving that most do. Well if someone has a license and a car they can have all the freedom of driving they want, right? One might say this, but think about certain groups of people who do not have this opportunity; teenagers and elders. All teenagers want is the feeling of being independent and to know that nothing is holding them back. Kids grow up thinking that all there is to driving is taking some insignificant test that will officially be the beginning of their driving-hood. Unfortunately, this is not the way that life works. In South Carolina as soon as a teen becomes fifteen years old they can go after their permit, which 180 days later can turn into a conditional provisional license. Later once a teenager is officially seventeen years old the big event takes place, getting their regular driving license. Does this not seem to hold back young teens so much though? It seems like forever that teens have to wait to be able to drive, and then when the time finally arrives that they are eligible to fasten a seatbelt and go, they are bombarded with the dreadful driving restrictions that are placed on them. David W. Eby, Ph.D., research scientist at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, has different views than some. Eby says, “If we’re ever going to solve the aging mobility problem, we need to have better alternatives for people, it can’t always fall to the personal vehicle.” There are plenty teenage drivers out there who undoubtedly would put the blame of their wrecks on the car itself. Would the real diagnosis of teenage wrecks actually be the teenagers themselves? Very many folks would put the blame upon the teenagers, and they would most likely be correct with that presumption. Teenagers live a carefree life style and always are ready to accelerate on to the next busy aspect of life.

Be Very Afraid”, he talks about how he suggest the parents to stop being helicopter parents and allow their children to be independent. However, other professionals’ suggestions are the opposite when teenagers start to drive. As a result of the teenagers’ immaturity, the parents are told to be more involved because their child’s life may be in danger. As stated in the article by Nichole Moris “the most dangerous two years of your life are between 16 and 17, and the reason for that is driving.” There are various factors that play huge roles through this phrase of the teenagers’ life: other passengers, cellphones, and parents. In 2013, under a million teenage drivers were involved in police-reported crashes, according to AAA. The accidents could have been more but many teenage accidents go unreported. As a result, one of their recommendations to the parents is to not allow their children to drive with other passengers: other passengers can big a huge distraction and could increase the rate of crashes by 44 percent. That risk doubles with a second passenger and quadruples with three or more. Furthermore, as technology has taken over teenagers’ lives, the parents should suggest to those teenagers who insists on using the phones that the only safe place for it to be: in a dock, at eye level, on the dashboard. The worst place is the cup holder, the driver’s lap, and the passenger’s seat. In 2008; 81% of teenage crash deaths were passenger vehicle occupants, 31% of teenage drivers killed had been drinking alcohol, 55% were not buckled up, and 37% of male teenage drivers involved in fatalities were speeding. Teenagers who drink and drive have a greater risk of serious crashes than older drivers with equal blood alcohol concentrations. Teens do not wear seat/safety belts as much as adults. Teens tend to take more risks due to overconfidence in their abilities. Also, studies show that the same bad behavior commonly seen in men in their twenties is seen in sixteen and seventeen year olds. Driving is a huge part of a teenager’s social life, too. They need licenses to attend school, work, or social events. So, a way to keep the driving age at sixteen and have better driving on the road is to have a graduated driver license. This GDL would make it so new drivers would gain experience driving under supervision of an older, experienced driver before they can drive on their own.
Driving at the age of sixteen is perfectly okay with people who does not seem to care because he or she feels as if someone gets into a car they are automatically going to put all attention into driving the vehicle which is not true nowadays because teenage drivers feel the need to be on a cell phone or trying to control the radio and trying to get dressed or put on make up when he or she should only be focused on operating the car. Teens need to be taught that driving is a task that is complex and demanding. Parents know how much experience a young driver has, and they know exactly how inconvenient it is when they have to drive with their teen everywhere while they have their permit. Teens tend to cause most traffic accidents in adults’ eyes. They are not experienced yet, and often fail to pay attention to others on the road. They often think of a car as being some type of toy, but they do not know how powerful it really is. The driver education programs must be strengthened in order to make sure that students really have safer habits, behind the wheel experience, and by having a better understanding of all the laws on the road.

One of the reason people say that the legal driven shouldn't be raised is because they think teens should practice at age of 15-17 so by the time they are 17 they will be ready to drive. Having a driver's license means responsibility. I have always been hesitant to get a license and still am a bit because I know how much responsibility comes with one. Firstly, a car is quite dangerous. When driving a car, mistakes can be very costly, and the driver has to be well trained in order to handle those mistakes, or better yet, not make them. Driving a car and obtaining a driver’s license does, perhaps, seem to provide people with a great sense of independence and freedom. Teenagers need to feel independent in order to learn to become successful on their own as well as realize how to handle life situations on their own, and having a license seems the perfect start and most effective way to do so. When teenagers feel this independence, they tend to act more mature, knowing the responsibilities they must now carry on their own (More4Kids).
