Introduction George Washington is considered a primary example of a leader because he demonstrated the core leadership attributes and competencies. The Army defines leadership as “the process of influencing others to provide purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization.” (ADP 6-22, 2012, pg. iii) The purpose of this paper is to describe how George Washington modeled leadership during the Revolutionary War, as well as during his presidency. This perception was due, in large part, to his character, his presence, and his unwavering perseverance despite the many hardships he faced. He continuously led from the front, always charging into battle with his men, determined to lead and motivate them to victory over the British forces. He showed his commitment to his men and the cause, as he remained with his troops during the Revolutionary War in difficult environments and suffered alongside them when supplies were low, especially at Valley Forge. (Bernstein, 2015) Despite losing several early battles to the British at Washington Heights and Brandywine, he persevered in the face of adversity, keeping his army together and cohesive. The Massachusetts 54th regiment demonstrated great courage at Fort Wagner. by attacking Fort Wagner nonstop knowing that they were fighting against the wall and that they could easily lose. They still continued to fight because they were close and when they saw one of their own men fall to the ground, it hurt their heart so they fought for that person. They did this that because the regiment was the only family they had and the way they trained and acted made them closer and become like brothers. This was one of those grate emotional motives that really pushed them to fight even harder. This was also to prove to whites that blacks were just as capable as whites in battle. Nathanael Greene, although not afforded many victories in battles, was a masterful strategist, soldier and statesman. He was able to successfully employ militia, regular, light and mounted units during his command in the South. He built upon the reputation that he made for himself at the beginning of the war in Boston. It is because of this reputation and his ability to produce results that made him the second most important general in the continental army, next only to George Washington.

Nathanael Greene was one of George Washington’s most trusted generals and close friend. He remained loyal to Washington throughout the entire war. When things started going bad for the colonists, Greene didn’t desert the cause. Instead he fought harder and continued to inspire his soldiers to stay strong. He accepted his position of power humbly, and when it was taken away from him he handled it gracefully (Golway). Nathanael Greene was a strong leader and a loyal friend during the American Revolution.
Our world is filled with many successful leaders. The gift of being a leader can be learned; however some individuals have a natural born talent to be a leader. Each leader has his or her own unique leadership style. The gift of being a leader can be learned. Certain individuals are born with a charismatic style and can easily be a leader. A successful leader is one who can inspire and motivate people towards a goal. Martin Luther King Jr. was an individual with a born gift to lead people. The following paper will discuss how Martin Luther King Jr. was able to inspire and motivate people with his effective leadership style.
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.
