There are many different types of leaders in today’s society, both men and women, political and spiritual, yet most of the world’s greatest leaders lived in the past. George Washington, also known as our founding father, was the very first president of the United States and led the American Revolution. Washington held a lot of leadership characteristics. His visionary mindset allowed him to lead people to succeed. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president is known as one of the greatest leaders ever. He was the president during the Civil War, and because of his persistence, courage, and determination he abolished slavery in the U.S. by signing the Emancipation Proclamation. Although people and times have changed, Washington and Lincoln will never
be forgotten for the impact they had on the American people. Adolf Hitler, although hated throughout most of the world, could be described as one of the world’s greatest leaders. Hitler knew how to draw an audience – he had presence. His strategic planning skills can be credited to one of the largest economic and military expansions the world had ever seen.
George Washington Plunkitt was a complicated politician from New York in the 1900’s. He had his own questionable way of seeing what’s right and what’s wrong. Plunkitt’s Ideas of right a wrong sometimes seemed to be off. However, some of his ideas about things that needed to be reformed were as true then as they are now. Plunkitt seemed to be a man that knew how to get what he wanted out of people with very little effort. From the perspective of an outsider this could make him hard to trust, but to people then this wasn’t a problem.
In the early years of America, the founding fathers’ passion for gardening and agriculture shaped America’s national identity. At least, that is what Andrea Wulf communicates in her novel, Founding Gardeners. During the revolutionary generation, agricultural success was vital to the nation’s economic well-being. During the struggles of political life, the founding fathers utilized gardening as a therapeutic outlet and their love of nature reflects in some of their political endeavors. Due to this fascination with nature, the founding fathers sought to expand their horizons westward. To all humans, the most important and influential thing is arguably your own morals. It decides the things you do, the things you say, and controls your overall desires and goals. Morals come from many places, such as nature versus nurture. Many of your morals come from your parents, be it because you learned what they taught, good or bad, or dislike what they taught so you chose the opposite, the rest is already consciously and basically instinctual. This is a very simple way to explain something very complex. In Appendix A, George Washington’s “Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation” there is a list of basic morals and behaviors that he believes everyone should be aware of and it is a very interesting read, especially if some of them you may have never considered. While the list can be outdated at times because of the progression of society and culture, a lot of these rules are still very important. In appendix B, there are a list of ‘cognitive bias’ or things that happen subconsciously that effect the way we view things or act. These two sets of information offer a very interesting perspective, especially when applied to each other. George Washington became President in 1789 and since then has been regarded as America’s “Founding Father”(10). This grand and hero-like status is said to have “began gravitating to Washington six months before the Declaration of Independence, when one Levi Allen addressed him in a letter as ‘our political Father.’”(10). The preservation of Washington’s role as a national hero has been allowed by authors and the media omitting his many flaws as if they had either been forgotten or were no longer important. Yet by excluding these human faults, they have projected an almost god-like hero and inflicted him upon the nation as their Father, somebody whose “life still has the power to inspire anyone”(10).
There are many individuals in American History, whom we as Americans regard for their courage and audacity in shaping our nation. We learn in our history classes the great accomplishments of our founding fathers such as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Ben Franklin. One other great founding father and our First President, George Washington was one whom we learned much about. We learn in school that he is as a prime example of leadership, citizenship, and overall individual achievement for his many contributions to our nation’s earliest struggles. But although we are taught that George Washington was this man of great disposition, no man is without his flaws. Many scholars have sought to enlighten individuals to these cracks in the Nation’s perspective of our first president. The following composition will give an analysis of literature that shows George Washington was in consistent regarding his views on slavery. Although Washington is well-known for his many political accomplishments little is spoken about his views regarding slavery.
The United States of America was formed by many president's of our time. One of these very influential presidents was George Washington. Courageous, smart and firm. The "founding father" has influenced many people today. He was a commander in chief of the forces during the Revolutionary War, chairman of the convention that wrote the Constitution, and the very first president. He has made very important decisions that still influence our country today.
Thesis Statement: George Washington is a hero because he stood up for his ideal that America should be free from England, and create a new form of government which would be fair and equitable. Even in the darkest of times, he never gave up and managed to maintain social and political order within the colonies.
When comparing two leaders, people tend to look at the characteristics, or leadership, traits that the person has. Even if the two people seem like an unlikely pair, it is the traits that prove the similarities. Courage, confidence and initiative are traits that both Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States, and Rosa Parks, a civil rights activist, demonstrated during their time of leadership.
Leadership is something that as humans we strive to be good at. It’s a skill that can be fostered in school, homes and sports. As Americans we often turn to those in leadership positions to help us during troubling times. Many great leaders have been born out of grave tragedy, when one person can show strength, wisdom and courage we celebrate them. Our country is driven by men and women who are out into leadership roles. Congress and government have their fair share of both positive and negative leaders. One perfect example of leadership is the position of the American President. Being the leader of the free world comes with immense pressure. Throughout history we have been able to see different men take on this role. No one has ever done the job perfectly but some presidents have made a stronger imprint on our society then others. Our twenty sixth president, Theodore Roosevelt, is one of those presidents, despite hardships and tragedies his passion for a better America was his motivation to fight for the country he loved.
A leader I have always admired and aspired to be is John Franklin Kennedy. JFK is one of the most well-known influential leaders in this world today. He was born on May 29, 1917 and lived life as a politician. JFK is most known for his accomplishments during his serving as 35th president of the United States, however, his term and life of leadership was cut short when he was assassinated on November 22, 1963. Many Americans consider JFK to be the greatest U.S. president of all time, for a number of reasons.
Throughout history, there have been great leaders, some for the good of humanity, and some for the not-so good of humanity. The one element all leaders have in common is in some way, have changed the course of history. The one great leader I have found to be interesting and envision of a great leader is William Bradford, an original passenger on the Mayflower, and the first ever governor elected on what is to become, American Soil.
This ship is going down! Leadership can be like a sinking ship and when it sinks the people are left adrift. Military units and even businesses have suffered from poor leaders who caused the ship to sink. So what makes a great leader? A leader who has the right life preserver for each situation. Visionary and ethical leadership can be considered as two life preservers, more like two life boats. Through lessons and research I have discovered distinct skills and traits leaders use to become a visionary leader, an ethical leader, or both. ABRAHAM LINCOLN: A Transformational Leader Throughout history, there have been leaders who are considered as admirable due to positive influences over other individuals. For example, in my opinion, Abraham Lincoln was able to influence the masses of people because he chose to think and behave differently from other leaders before him. When a person is considered as a leader, there are several responsibilities and qualities that will attract others to follow after the teachings that are demonstrated. Leadership can be described as the process for “guiding individuals, groups, and entire organizations in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals (Shockley-Zalabak, 2015, p. 220).
The most notable person qualified to hold the title of a great leader would be Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr., became known as a leader for the African American citizens in the 1960’s. He was known as one of the greatest American Civil Rights leaders to be born in a time when black Americans had no rights. The 1960’s was a time of unrest and racism was a common trait for many people. Martin Luther King Jr. for thirteen years showed great leadership in a non-violent way, and he showed love and compassion always (The King Center, 2014).
People are always following what the next person is doing and never sticking out and starting something new. We rarely ever have anybody that takes lead of something or is a natural born leader, but that is a requirement that must be made by the president. Leadership means that you show pride , you have people looking up to you, your loyal, and you that lead people. I think that the president which showed that the most was George Washington.
