Animal Farm Literary Analysis

Intro
“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.” (pg. 141) Animal Farm is a novella written by George Orwell. In this story the animals want freedom from the drunken farmer, Mr. Jones, so they rebel and take the farm for themselves. The pigs start taking over and manipulate the other animals by using double speak. Eventually the farm returns to normal, however, the pigs are more powerful than the other animals. The story shows how the animals on the farm are affected by Animalism which is a parallel for what happened to the people and political leaders of Russia affected by communism. Three of the main literary elements in Animal Farm are symbolism, conflict, and irony. These elements contribute to the themes of how power corrupts people even if their intentions are originally good and you should never blindly follow a leader if you don’t know what they are actually saying.

Body 1- Symbolism/Allusion
In Animal Farm, Orwell uses many different symbols to make the allusions to Soviet Russia. Symbols create deeper meaning and a fuller understanding of this book. The character vs character conflict is mainly between the pigs, Napoleon and Snowball. This conflict starts out when the two pigs are leading the farm together. They are always disagreeing on everything and it starts to become a problem. When Snowball proposes the idea of the windmill, Napoleon says it’s a bad idea and that it won’t work. During the vote on if they should build the windmill or not, Napoleon has the puppy’s that he raised up, run Snowball out of the farm. He then says that the windmill had been his idea all along and they were going to go through with it. In Russia the same thing happened between Stalin and Trotsky when Trotsky went against Stalin’s policies about revolution. Stalin then banished Trotsky and became leader of the Soviet Union. The second and main conflict, character vs society, is the clash between the animals and the humans. This conflict starts out with the animals wanting freedom from the humans who are their oppressors. After the animals get rid of Jones and his wife, things on the farm are undisturbed for awhile. It then gradually becomes clear that Napoleon is changing the principles of Animalism to suit himself and he is actually the leader of all the other animals. By the end of the book, the conflict is resolved because the humans and the pigs are so similar that things are just back to how they were
