George Frideric Handel was born on February 23, 1685 in Halle, Germany. Handel was known as the greatest composer during the Baroque era. Handel was most famous for the Messiah a English Ontario. This great composer also wrote the great opera seria known as “Julius Caesar” which was performed first in London, England in 1724. The opera seria quickly became popular and was toured in several other cities.
George was a very talented composer but, unlike many others he didn’t come from a family with a long line of musicians. At very early age Handel had his mind set on studying music even though his father disapproved. Because his father wanted him to become a lawyer he didn’t allow Handel to play musical instruments. Despite his father’s wishes, historians believed he studied music by candlelight. To make his father proud he studied law for a short time but knew this was not what he wanted to do. George followed his dreamed and went on to join an orchestra in Germany that would change his life forever.
George was a traveling conductor, composer, violinist, and organist. He settled in in Florence so that he could study the Italian style music. Handel wrote over forty different Italian operas unfortunately, many of them were lost. Most of them were written and mainly performed in London. All of the Italian operas that Handel wrote were a huge success for him. Beethoven certainly admired his works calling him “the great composer that ever lived” indeed he was. Handel spent the rest of years before his death completing several other works like the Messiah, Acis, and Orlando. Unfortunately, as years went by Hayden stopped writing opera and focused his attention towards Oratorio. More sacred religious style vocal music which were written mainly for church services. Handel composed several Oratorio that were masterpieces before he died in 1759, known as the greatest composer that ever lived. I really enjoyed “Julius Caesar” I thought it was beautifully performed and I would definitely go see it if I get the opportunity.
Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer, said to be one of the best organists of his time (Baroque Music). He was born in March 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia as the youngest of eight children. His father Johann Ambrosius was also a musician and a court trumpeter for the Duke of Eisenach, and Director of the musicians in Eisenach (Baroque Music). Bach came from a family with a music talent, with his family members having held positions as organists, Cantors, instrumentalists in Thuringia.

Born November 22, 1913 in Suffolk, England, Britten displayed his musical gift at an early age. He was born on the feast day of Saint Cecilia, who, ironically, is the patron saint of music. He was born to Robert Victor Britten, who was a dentist, and his wife Edith Rhoda, her was a secretary and an amateur musician. Music inevitably helped the Britten family maintain their social status, as well as bring them closer together as a family. Edith Britten would often invite the community to the house for mini concerts.
The music of the Baroque period was focused on having music be a tool of communication to its listeners; conveying an arousal of emotions. Composers of this time thought to use this tool to have this effect or one similar to it to correctly match music from the Roman time period. One composer that goes by the name of Georg Phillip Telemann. He was a German composer born in 1681, he was known as one of the most prolific composers of the Baroque era, “At the age of just ten years old he was able to play four different instruments and had written arias, motets and instrumental works”(Norton Grove Concise Encyclopedia of Music, 756). As well as learning many skills at a young age, his fame grew immensely in Germany becoming a very famous composer and was even assigned four times as much space as the famous J.S. Bach in some contemporary dictionaries. Telemann composed in all varieties of forms and styles, from Italian-style concertos to French-style overture suites and quartets. George, at a young age, had a passion for music, but his father wanted him to pursue a career in civil law. George’s father believed that music would not provide a real source of income and he would not even allow his son to own an instrument. Both the Baroque era and the Classical era wrote choral music of a sacred nature, and moved from the acapella choirs of the past eras. Prominent composers such as Bach in the Baroque era wrote cantatas for the Lutheran service, and Handel wrote oratorios for the Catholic Church. These were performed with SATB voices with instrumental accompaniment. As was the style of Baroque composers they were dramatic, used imitative polyphony, moved to major and minor scales, and had a type of base line. George Frideric Handel was born musically inclined. As a child he was deprived of musical instruments because his father wanted him to pursue the law profession. However, George was allowed to take music lessons from a local organist, by the name of Friedrich Wilhelm Zachau, after Handel had impressed the Duke when he played the organ at the chapel. In his following years, Handel would travel to many places, accepting many different musical occupations. As Handel traveled, he was introduced to many of his musical influences. He wrote operas, oratorios, anthems, secular cantatas, and also wrote scarred music. Even though his father wanted him to become a lawyer, Handel never gave up his dream of becoming a world class musician. His creativeness and speed is unmatched even today. The operas and oratorios Handel created are still some of the greatest ever made. His contrasting textures and beautiful melodies make his music some of the most technical and beautiful music ever created.
