Genre Analysis of a Psychology Critique Paper
For my psychology class, I am required to complete critique papers on reputable research studies. For one of these assignments, I was asked to analyze a research paper entitled “The Misperception of Sexual Interest” and to identify possible flaws in the study, as well as explain what the authors did well. While completing this assignment, I had to consider the ethos of the class and understand the kairos and network of interpretation in which I was writing. An understanding of these facets is essential for effective, well-structured writing that is focused and appropriate for a science course.
The universal nature of rhetoric entails that it varies with different areas of study, making it important to be able to recognize the distinctions between the requirements and expectations within each genre. Thus, the rhetorical skills I have gained in this English class can and should be applied to my psychology class. Scientific genres leave little to no room for bias and misguided logic. More specifically, the academic genre of psychology encourages critical and analytical thinking and revolves around the search for truth. When I worked on this assignment, my thought process was guided by this ethos. Because the ethos establishes what is and is not acceptable within the field of psychology, I not only used the ethos of the class to guide my writing, but also to critique the study itself by identifying any areas where the author avoided or failed to avoid bias and other transgressions against the psychology genre. Throughout the writing process, I considered all of these expectations to establish a strong kairos and ethos in my critique.

Throughout the entire writing process, I was guided by the academic genre of psychology. Like most scientific genres, psychology demands objectivity, appropriate interpretation of facts, and critical thinking. These constitute the ethos of the class for which I was writing and set the inherent guidelines for writing in psychology. By fulfilling these expectations, I was able to ensure that my paper was satisfactory by my professor’s standards, which are representative of the standards of psychology as a whole. Understanding the network of interpretation and kairos of my class made my writing effective and focused so that my ideas could be communicated more easily and so that my critique held more value.
Heinrichs begins by explaining the art of rhetoric and laying out the basic tools of argument. He emphasizes the importance of using the proper tense to avoid arguing the wrong issue. Furthermore, he introduces logos, ethos and pathos and shows how to “wield” each rhetorical tool. In Part 2, Heinrichs discusses common logical fallacies as well as rhetorical fouls. He remarks rhetoric’s single rule of never arguing the inarguable and demonstrates how ethos helps to know whom to trust. In Part 3, Kairos becomes an important tool for knowing the right time to persuade one’s audience. The author begins his argument by retelling the story of his youth to build his ethos but the results are poor as it presents more questions on how he is a credible source on this argument as his only evidence is his own story. However, through the same means his pathos is built as his anecdote conveys feelings in the audience, making them more willing to listen. Graff finally, gives a call to action to schools to use students’ interests to develop their skills in rhetoric and analysis, which reveals the logic behind his argument. In the improvement of creating drafts, each draft can be changed and reworked to be clearer. Authors need to welcome both negative input and compliments and be suspicious of both. Numerous individuals in the world of writing see text differently. While some agree with a point 100%, there are others that disagree with the solution or point an author is trying to get across. With disagreement comes debate. With debate comes counterpoints, and facts to back up an individual’s stands on a topic. To an audience, credibility is a main source of understanding; if an author isn’t confident and is creditable in their argument, then it is invalid. Usually an author uses the rhetorical system when countering a reason or stands. Logos are Rational or Logical appeals. The logical appeal uses reason to make a case. Theoretical dissertation is mostly logos driven because educational spectators respect scholarship and evidence. Advocates using logos rely on evidence and proof, whether the proof is hard data or careful reasoning. Pathos is an Emotional Appeal. In a pathetic appeal, speakers focus on a reader’s sympathy and kind-heartedness, anger and displeasure, desire for love, or sorrow to get their point across. Effective rhetoricians can trigger these feelings in an audience even if the feeling wasn’t there beforehand. Ethos use the writer’s own credibility. Rhetoricians use themselves and their position as a “professional” or as a “morally right” to give their argument existence and standing. Using the rhetorical triangle as a tool to appeal or persuade the reader can be very effective if used all together. After I completed my rough draft, I was a little apprehensive about the feedback that I was going to receive from the peer review. I knew that I had done plenty of research and had good sources to support my focus, but I was unsure if my persuasive argument and the focus of the paper were received as I intended. I knew going in that I fixed my in-text citations, works cited page, thesis, and reformatted my paper to include more of a persuasive focus. After I received feedback from the peer review, I had mixed emotions about my rough draft. I found out that my citations were still incorrect and my thesis is not properly structured to support my argument.
